UFO Stage Review

「星蓮船」のステージとボスを、識者の方々に振り返ってもらったぞ。早苗さん、保護者のほうが多くないですか?

We've consulted our panel of experts to look back on the stages and bosses of "Undefined Fantastic Object". Miss Sanae, you've got quite a few guardians, huh?

博麗霊夢:博麗神社の巫女さん。お宝を追いかけない巫女は巫女じゃない。

Reimu Hakurei: The Hakurei shrine maiden. A shrine maiden who doesn't chase after treasure isn't a proper shrine maiden.

霧雨魔理沙:普通の魔法使い。魔法使いじゃなくてもお宝は追うもんだろ?

Marisa Kirisame: An ordinary magician. You don't have to be a magician to chase after treasure, right?

早苗&神奈子&諏訪子:守矢神社のご祭神。早苗が調子にのりすぎたのでご先祖大出張。

Sanae, Kanako, and Suwako: The deities enshrined in the Moriya Shrine. Sanae gets carried away too much, so her ancestors are dispatched here.

Kanako: "I'd like to say that I'm glad you're finally independent, but..."
Suwako "I was hoping you'd make a bigger splash. Like, BOOM!"

ZUN

草原に船の影が差す、というシーンを作ったら気持ちいいだろうなと。でも僕一人で作ろうとするとお金も時間も足らない。僕だけで達成できる範囲でどうやったらそういうイメージのものが出来上がるかを考えて、爽快な音楽を作って演出的に足りない部分をカバーするという……。時間をかけたらいいものができる、というわけでもないのが難しいところです。

I thought it'd be nice to have a scene showing a ship's shadow on a grassy field. But I didn't have enough money or time to make such a scene on my own. I thought about how to accomplish that kind of image as much as I could on my own, and then composed an exhilarating song to cover up the production shortfalls...The hard part is that one is not able to make a good product just by spending a lot of time on it.

Kanako "I, for one, would choose to ignore such a youkai."
Suwako "That's a little scary, Kanako. But I might just ignore her as well..."

ZUN

1面もそうだけど、「星蓮船」は空が舞台なのでなかなか誤魔化しがきかなくてね。いろいろなコストとの戦いの連続でした。そこで2面は雲の中にいます、という……繋ぎのステージで、ボスも繋ぎのボス(笑)。そういえば、なんでみんな片手を上げてるデザインなんだろう?(笑)

As with stage 1, "Undefined Fantastic Object" is set in the sky, so it's hard to be misleading on that front. It was a constant battle against various costs. So, stage 2 takes place in the clouds...It's a filler stage, and the boss is also filler (lol). Come to think of it, why'd I design all the bosses with one hand raised?

諏訪子「でも、妖怪退治自体は新鮮だし、早苗も楽しそうだね」
神奈子「なんにせよ楽しむのは大事なことよ」
早苗「ですよね、ですよね!」

Suwako "But, you're still new to youkai extermination, and you seemed to be having fun."
Kanako "In the end, it's important to have fun."
Sanae "That's right, right?"

ZUN

宝船を追う話だから、船に着いたらラスボスが出てくる、と普通は考えるけど、そのために話を引っ張るのは難しいから、もう早々に船に到着してもらう。というわけで、ここで話の最初のオチですね。体験版はここまでなので、プレイヤーも作者も続きが読めない(笑)。地霊殿が4面で登場するのと同じパターンで、自分でも先が読めないから作っていて楽しいんですよ。

Since this story revolves around chasing a treasure ship, you'd normally expect to reach the final boss once you've arrived on the ship, but it's hard to drag the plot out for that, so I just had the heroines arrive on the ship early. So, here's the first punchline in the story. The demo version ends here, so neither the player nor the creator can view the rest of the story (lol). It's just how you arrive in the Palace of the Earth Spirits during stage 4, and I enjoy making these patterns because you can't predict what'll happen next.

Kanako "That reminds me, I used to be in a shrine that had a ship as its goshintai."
Sanae "A ship, you say?"
Suwako "It's like what they say, too many captains steer the ship up a mountain."

ZUN

船に乗り込みました。中にすごいボスがいるのかと思いきや、船を沈没させるやつしかいない。完全にツッコミ待ちですね。3面まではがんばって空っぽいステージを作ったけど、室内なのでそういう苦労から解放されて好き放題やれる。自然より人工物のほうが楽だなあ。曲もとつぜん拍子抜けさせるような感じで楽しいです。でもゲームはここからが本番なので難易度は上がる(笑)。

We're now onboard the ship. You'd think there'd be an important boss in here, but it's just a girl who sinks ships. I'm definitely waiting for a Tsukkomi[2] right now. I had to work hard to create empty-ish stages up to stage 3, but since we were indoors, I could do anything I wanted without difficulty. Manmade objects are easier to deal with than nature, I suppose. The music is also fun in a way that feels abrupt and anticlimactic. But this is where the game really begins, so the difficult ramps up from this point (lol).

Suwako "I guess that's what happens when there are no mountains or lakes to worship."

ZUN

トンデモ設定なので、ますますやりたい放題です。ステージは全部曲に合わせて作っていて、めちゃくちゃな変拍子に合わせて敵が出てくるんです。あの変な感じこそが魔界(笑)。道中が変化球的な感じなのに対して、折り目正しい感じのボスが出てきます。

There's a ton of setup, so I'm doing more and more of the things I want to do here. The entire stage is set to the music, and the enemies all emerge to a disorderly irregular metre. That weirdness is what Makai's all about (lol). While the stage itself is very varied, the boss herself seems very well-mannered.

Well, it does seem like the Myouren Temple really did reduce the amount of harm caused by youkai. It's kinda frustrating.

Kanako "I'm impressed that she's been gaining faith from youkai for a long time. She's a respectable rival in another religion."
Suwako "You sound serious."
Sanae "I shall gather all of Gensokyo's faith!"

ZUN

ここにきて「インベーダー」感が全開です。曲もほとんどドラムだけで、背景も無くて、ひたすら「インベーダー」。空を飛んで気持ちよかった導入部分からのギャップです。でもボスは弾幕も曲もかっこいい。それもギャップ。「風神録」からの流れの、クライマックスがここにくるような設計を考えていました。「東方怪綺談」のセルフパロディですが、今回はこの作品の後もシリーズが終わらずに続いていきました。

The "Space Invaders" impression is in full-force here. The song consists almost entirely of drums, no backing, and it's just outright "Space Invaders". It is a big difference from the initial part of the game, where it felt good to fly in the sky. But the boss is also cool, both in terms of danmaku and music. There's another disparity there. I was thinking of designing it in such a way that the climax of the series would be here, proceeding from "Mountain of Faith". This is a self-parody of "Mystic Square," but this time the series continued without it ending after this game.

I may have been a bit too excited at encountering a youkai that's been spoken of since ancient times. As a youkai extermination specialist, I couldn't ask for anything more.

正体不明の正体を知ったこと、最初は良かったと思っていたが今は少しだけ残念な気もするな。

At first I was happy to identify this unidentified youkai, but now I'm just kinda disappointed.

Bad:
Suwako "By the way, Sanae..."
Kanako "...Weren't you more excited to meet an alien than a youkai?"
Sanae "If aliens did exist, wouldn't you be? But it turned out she wasn't an alien. What a letdown..."

ZUN

宇宙人リトルグレイがボスとして出ていた可能性も高かったんですが、宇宙人を出していたら東方の可能性がもっと拡がっていたかもしれないですね。なぜUFOが飛んでいるかの理由付けとして、本当のUFOだったことにするか、正体不明のぬえを正体にするかでは大きな違いがありますから。ぬえらしさは最後の弾幕だけで、あとはなんでもありにしました。

There's a good chance that a Little Grey Alien would've been the boss here, but it truly was an alien, then the possibilities for Touhou would've been much more expansive. There's a big difference in assuming that a UFO was a real UFO as rationale for why it's flying, and assuming that it's true identity was actually an unidentifiable nue. The only nue-like part was the danmaku in the final spell, while the rest was made to be anything but.

The tsukkomi is generally the smarter of the two, and exists to rail at the boke for their mistakes and exaggerations.
