ZUN、Windows

ZUN, Looking Back on the Early Windows Trilogy
Mr. ZUN is always looking forward, and often speaks of his latest work as if it's his masterpiece, but here we had him make a rare reflection on the past, and he told us all sorts of things. Sure enough, what he told us could only have been said now.

Regarding "Embodiment of Scarlet Devil"
Regardless of how it might seem to be the player, to me "Embodiment of Scarlet Devil" was the 6th Touhou game so it was time for me to start wanting to change things up, even in terms of the jokes. So since this was the first game on Windows, and would probably be the first game a lot of people would experience, I wanted to have a "Western" boss despite the name of the series being "Touhou" (Eastern). And so the character Remilia was born. This sort of joke only works once, after all. I wanted to surprise people, so suddenly, a vampire out of nowhere. The sense of being Eastern that came from the name was missing entirely, and in fact anything was possible. I even put in a maid and a witch. The original concept for the game was of have this sense of being a hodgepodge. About the only thing Touhou-esque about it was stage 3's Chinese theming (lol).
This applies to the soundtrack too. I didn't plan to make anything that sounded too Japanese, and decided even the music would be Western. The whole game was like that, so to top it off I wanted to attach the name "Touhou" to it. The protagonist is a shrine maiden, so it was as if to say "It's Touhou as long as there's a shrine maiden." Of course, I didn't decide on a vampire just because they're Western. Even with just their charisma, vampire characters are already incredibly powerful. I'd be able to make all sorts of danmaku. I think they make a good youkai representative of the West. There are various other characters too, but since I wanted to make a big impact there was no need to deal in minor youkai.
Regarding "Perfect Cherry Blossom"
If "unexpectedness" was the key to the previous work, then for this one I wanted it to be firmly "Japanese". To at long last show off it's true Touhou-ness. The first hit was to get people excited about even Japanese-ness, but I also wanted to keep a bit of the element of surprise. I had decided that the end of "Perfect Cherry Blossom" would be a fight against one of the dead. I thought that would make a good final boss. So I decided early on to have the bosses that appear in the beginning have nothing to do with the dead. There aren't really any phantom enemies either. I believe it's pretty rare for a ghost to be a final boss. There are plenty of games where you visit the land of the dead, but you're always just passing through, and it's not your goal.
When you speak with Yuyuko, she seems to see death as something trivial, or even cheerful. In the world of Touhou, there is no gulf between life and death, they're more like two neighboring lands. I think that's fitting.
Youmu is half-human, half-phantom, but her phantom half isn't really connected to her body. I had simply decided she was half human and phantom, and thought "then why not draw both?" So then I drew each as half a person.
When did I start feeling unconstrained in my designs? Nowadays Reimu wears a skirt, but when I designed her in the past I felt that I had to draw her with a hakama because she's a shrine maiden. But when I thought about it, it's a fantasy game so I feel like it doesn't really matter. So her design's gotten further and further away from a shrine maiden. But I'm still able to make everyone think "that's a shrine maiden", so my sense that it's okay to do that has gotten stronger too. So I don't have a problem doing designs however I feel like. That's what led to me being fine with Youmu being half-human and half-phantom, and having each half be separate even though she's still one character. Youmu gives the impression of being a serious character. She's somewhat easy to use, so maybe I'll have her show up next after Sanae.
Next I have to talk about wavelengths. Colors exist because of wavelengths, so by thinking of it as starting right at the red from "Embodiment of Scarlet Devil" and ending with the violet from Yukari, I kept following that trend and made an enemy who used wavelengths themselves in "Imperishable Night". At the time I was able to do a lot of things with the color-based content. That's the meaning behind introducing "Yukari". I wanted to establish the setting of Gensokyo here, to make it easier to use it for other works.
By introducing Yukari, I was able to have "Imperishable Night" involve a place that wasn't Gensokyo. Without Yukari, it wasn't clear what was actually a part of Gensokyo; maybe you'd think the Lunar Capital was in Gensoyko too. By having Yukari present I could say "Everything up to here is Gensokyo."
It's called the outside world, but to Gensokyo the outside world isn't just everything on "the other side". In "Phantasmagoria of Flower View" they suddenly start talking about Hell, and even in "Perfect Cherry Blossom" the Netherworld isn't part of Gensokyo. In other words, Gensokyo is smaller that you thought.
It takes courage to make a character like that. Like, it's tough to plan that far ahead. Even if the story itself is complete, a character like that represents the fact that you're not really sure if you've started just one work.
Regarding "Imperishable Night"
Kaguya is the sort of "make something I know about in this world" character that I love to create, but it would have been hard to do this at first. I could finally use a famous character because I'd already put out a number of works. Otherwise, you'd simply be throwing your precious characters out into the wind. You have to have an established setting for these sorts of characters suddenly appearing in a game to get you excited, right? At the same time, you don't really see games just throwing fairy tale characters into all their important locations, right? Well, unless it's a period piece of something. Personally, I thought that having Princess Kaguya show up would be pretty amusing all on its own, so that was the foundation I built it around. Then I made an original backstory so you could see a Princess Kaguya you'd never seen before, and made everyone surrounding her unusual too.
Eirin is meant as Touhou's connection to Japanese mythology, in particular I wanted to show the Lunar Capital in Touhou. A Lunar Capital that isn't beautiful, one that everyone hates. Somewhere that wields absolute authority and puts on an air of self-importance just isn't going to have a good image. It's a dystopia.
My thinking was that impurity comes from death so they don't want to die, but a world without death is also a world without life. A world with neither life nor death. That thought gave birth to a creepy setting. It's no different from a world ruled by artificial intelligence. It's Japanese mythology mixed up with sci-fi. Starting with "Gensokyo", Touhou had finally become a fully fleshed out setting, and I had come to realize that the games I had thrown together for fun up til then had deeper bits to them that were made more interesting by their connection to the world.
A danmaku shooting game requires that you give it the type of characters that shoot bullets. You should have a story that puts in those types of characters. The response to this line of thought that I finally arrived at was "Imperishable Night". I wouldn't have been able to do it all in one go, it required the build up of 3 works. I think if I'd just suddenly announced "Imperishable Night" out of nowhere, it'd have ended up being "that weird shooting game where Princess Kaguya shows up for complicated reasons." It was necessary to establish what kind of world Touhou was. Well, this is all in hindsight, but it got me to where I wanted to be so it worked out all right.
Looking Back on the Historical Context
There isn't much reason to be in a hurry when making doujin software. If you can make it, if it can be completed, then there's no problem. I was earning a salary at a company, so it didn't even matter if it sold or not. Maybe I was only able to make 3 of them because I was by myself. I wasn't thinking about what would come next, but my path was formed naturally.
Thanks to the times changing, even if I were to try the exact same thing today, the content would be consumed in a flash and I might not even last 3 years. Even if "Embodiment of Scarlet Devil" were a big hit, they'd run out of content and that'd be it. To keep it relevant I'd have to keep offering new content. Once they stop talking about it, the users move on to the next thing, so it's difficult to work at your own pace.
When I made Touhou, it was right when people started drawing their own pictures and making their own announcements and such, I guess when it become normal for private individuals to use the internet, and it rode that wave.
I think about how I'd make something in the current climate, but I guess it wouldn't change all that much. Even if you might run out of content, I still think it's best to make things without rushing. Don't give in to the desire to get it done all at once. I think it might better to have the work that makes people go "Hey, I forgot about this but it came out!" The present becomes the past before you know it, and access is easy, so I think it might be okay to do just enough things so you aren't completely forgotten.
In terms of the system, I had been imagining that once I put in "Spell Practice", it would be the end of the games. I had made it with the idea that it would be a compilation, and there's even a spell card with the name "Imperishable Shooting" giving off a sense of finality. So the fact that I had continued to make games after that was because my way of thinking had changed from "let's bring it to completion" to something else. But you could say it was because I brought it to completion then that I'm here right now. I had gone from "I want to express Touhou like this" to "Wouldn't it be interesting if it were like this?"
After "Perfect Cherry Blossom", the serialization of "Curiosities in Lotus Asia" began, which was the perfect timing for me to expand the world of Touhou. In the past, I had been making games while thinking about how well I could depict what the world of Touhou was like. That is, how well I could depict it not in writing but from in a game. And now that I'm done with that, I am now moving in the direction of trying to link this world to the real world.
