:After six years of sitting around I think it would be all right to go with "Kakashi Psychic News" a la psychic photography, using the Hermit Purple example from above as a reference translation. If there are no objections I'll change it in a week? Spirit?

I'm suspecting the current translation "spirit" of Spirit News. This term "念報" (nempou), borrowing the sound from "うらみ念法 (urami nempou) of Fujiko Fujio A's "Matarou ga kuru!!", should be a portmanteau of 念写 (thoughtography, nensha) and 年報 (annual report paper, nempou). If we translate "nensha" as "thoughtography", "nempou" is "thoughtographic report", while Hatate is rather using her ability of downloading data of others — copy & paste. What do you think about my suspicion? --masuo64 Talk 08:13, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Indeed, "spirit" seems to be a bad choice of words here. In fact, "spirit photography" is something that I suspect comes from a Japanese-English dictionary, whereas the better word has always been "thoughtography." "Thoughtographic report" is definitey better.--としあき 08:26, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
General consensus where? --ZEROGRAVITY-A01 13:38, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
^ This. Just because someone suggests it and you think it is good, think twice before you change it by yourself. There is more than just you, Tosiaki. Didn't that spark up a discussion just, like, two weeks ago, because you felt there was the need to change something without general consensus?--HyperGumba 13:44, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Sometimes, though, there is a need to be bold, or otherwise nothing will get done. If it was incorrect, it can be reverted. The most important thing is to discuss its merits. In any case, I guess shall heed your word and request more comment from others next time such a question comes up, and in fact, request for others to make the change rather than always do the changes myself.--としあき 14:03, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
In part there is also the problem that Nensha (We could call it Nensha as well!) can be translated or refereed to in other ways thoughtography is only one way as both 'projected thermography' or 'nengraphy' are acceptable terms. (Refer to the wikipedia entry on Nensha since I can't figure how to cross site link) Zelinko 15:23, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Crosslinked just for ya. --ZEROGRAVITY-A01 16:09, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Couldn't we just replace "Spirit" with "Psychic"? Spirit photography is really a psychic ability anyway. --Prime32 16:03, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Thoughtography/Thoughtographic is awkward and archaic, but is still an actual, real term. Someone else other than me would be more qualified to say so, but I fail to see "spirit" in the Japanese term.
Regarding English, any reference to "spirit" photography just makes me think of ghost photographs. I mean, I've almost certainly never seen it used for thoughtography outside of Touhou and Wikipedia. In fact, from the Talk on their own article, they have their own concerns about it. It seems the two were once mistakenly merged and any references to "spirit photography" may be remnants of when the articles were together. Indeed, they are two separate concepts, and using a well-known term for something having nothing to do with Hatate could confuse people.
I say either use Thoughtography, or Nengraphy, which their article acknowledges as an English term. Going even further, since they acknowledge the "Nen" root in English, it could be fine to simply use Nensha, even. Though I can't say how common that actually is in English. Psychic, as Prime said, could be used, also. But either way I don't feel keeping "spirit" would be right. U❊T❊W 14:44, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
I don't see any problems with "Thoughtography" or anything of that sort. Doesn't sound awkward to me. - Kiefmaster99 16:02, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
Thoughtography sounds like one of those "literal verb+ic made-up words that's exactly what it says on the tin" to me. Kinda like me saying "Smackariffic", "Danmakuholic", and "Jumpamatic". Of course, as this is Touhou and this is regarding the name of something in the first place, it possibly makes sense for it to be like that. But that's before taking into account that thoughtography is an actual English word. I guess that or Psychic would fit. The whole way that Hatate's ability works is more psychic or thought-based than spirit-based anyways, especially with ZUN's recent comments about it in SoPM, if I recall correctly. Outright using "Thoughtography" in the name isn't the best idea, since it's really awkward compared to the original Japanese, which shortens "nensha" to "nen" and appears to become a pun as indicated above. Of course we can't retain the pun when translating it, but I would personally go with "Kakashi Thought Report" which is more or less a literal translation, with "thought" implying "thoughtography". Polaris 23:26, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
I can live with that. "Thought Report" is probably the closest we can get while still keeping it fairly literal, with a very weak pun (report - a piece of writing/ grapho - writing). - Kiefmaster99 14:39, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
That sounds pretty good. U❊T❊W 00:27, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
I'd say "Thought Report" carries the implication that it's about Hatate's opinions, rather than facts. While that's... not exactly untrue, it's not something I think she'd care to advertise. On another note, I've seen the ability of Hermit Purple translated as "psychic photos", though I'm not sure what it was originally called. --Prime32 (talk) 16:12, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

It's nenshya (念写). --Doncot (talk) 17:28, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
