Romanization

The game screenshots I've seen have her surname romanized as "Reiuzi", both in her dialog portrait caption and under her health bar. So, as much as I dislike that romanization standard, shall we move this page to "Reiuzi Utsuho", and list "Reiuji" as an alternate spelling? -Winane 18:45, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

In IaMP, Yuyuko's surname is romanized as "Saigyouzi", but her page is still Saigyouji.

Both are correct and acceptable. "Zi" is an obsolete way of romanizing the syllable "ji", like "ti" for "chi", "tu" for "tsu" and "si" for "shi". Suit yourself.

SilverHerring 16:24, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, we have other character pages that don't follow ZUN romanizations like Fujiwara no Mokou. It doesn't really matter.

Cage in Lunatic Runagate: Chapter 3

Perhaps I haven't been paying enough attention to the plot, but was the crow from the 3rd chapter of CiLR some sort of reference to Utsuho Reiuji? The 3rd chapter was released well before Subterranean Animism was, and it mentions Yatagarasu slightly. All in all, I just want to know if that crow was important to someone, since there are a few in Touhou (Aya as well). Small little hints like this never get mentioned again, but they are interesting, and that crow definitely had a mission to reach the moon...

(...was the crow from the 3rd chapter of CiLR some sort of reference to Utsuho Reiuji?) Almost certainly not. --T. Solamarle 05:24, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Relationships with the Moriya Shrine

Sounds like you didn't read much on her lines in UNL. She is now working with Kanako and Suwako in the Nuclear Project... Well she know Sanae... but she is a bird-brain to remember so. I will update this. -Dandan550 00:56, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Her Third Leg

I've read doujins and seen fanmade images where she doesn't have her Third Leg. Can Utsuho take it off? Fairy Maid 01:35, November 3, 2009 (UTC)

It's unconfirmed, I believe. Don't believe fanmades' all the time. ~~Takoto 17:55, November 3, 2009 (UTC)
It's in the SA endings. _dk 00:00, November 4, 2009 (UTC)

The Cat

I can't say that I'm remotely certain on the idea, but could the cat in Utsuho's background instead be a reference to Schrödinger's cat? I may be stretching things, but the thought DOES have its roots in quantum mechanics and radioactive decay... Battousai9439 02:09, November 22, 2009 (UTC)

No but it's already noted, check her fun facts. Also i belived it is also related to Orin since she is a nekomata/kasha. -Dandan550 03:12, November 30, 2009 (UTC)

Elephant's foot

The concrete on her leg is not a reference to the Chernobyl sarcophagus, close though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5EAS5PT7Q8&feature=related

Discussion regarding nuclear fusion

I have some points I'd like to made regarding some points made in that section. Using Wikipedia:Fusion power as a source.
Regarding D-T process
I do not find tritium scarcity to be an issue since it can be bred using lithium. The problem then becomes the availability of lithium.
Regarding greenness of fission, deuterium-tritium (D-T) reaction, proton-proton (P-P) chain reaction
There is some problem of comparing the D-T reaction to P-P. It isn't quite fair to only talk about D-T, currently the most feasible option, to P-P, while used in stars cannot be mimicked on Earth. Kanako may also be referring to a different specific type of fusion reaction when talking about it being green, perhaps a less-feasible one only possible in the fantasy that is Gensokyo.
Anyways, I suppose I'd need to do more research on my end too. - Kiefmaster99 21:36, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

As well, some other ranting from me:
From the official profile, it says that "The ultimate power the yatagarasu possessed was the power to split and fuse atoms." This would lead me to believe that it is capable of both fusion and fission, although her ability only mentions fusion. As well, realistically, the suns she creates would be unable to exist unless she contained them somehow, perhaps via her "fuse atoms" ability. Her power would draw atoms together needed to induce fusion, mimicking gravity used in stars. I suppose this also vaguely resembles Suika's ability.
If she did use the exact same process as the sun, the proton-proton threat, then much like the sun, there would still be dangers from radiation. Gamma radiation is converted into the less lethal, but still dangerous, X-rays, UV rays, and anything else less powerful. That being said, the radiation produced is more easily containable (lead would do). - Kiefmaster99 02:12, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Nuclear fission

Nuclear fission has no part in Utsuho's character. This is made absolutely clear by the fact that the game has made an extensive contrast saying how fusion is much better than fission. By saying that fission is a part of her character, it defeats the whole purpose of the "fusion is better than fission" stuff.

There was a translation that stated that the Yatagarasu's ability having been stated as the "splitting and fusing" of atoms, but that is actually only a translation mistake, which is now fixed. In any case, usage of the word "fission" is clearly inappropriate here. Fission is different from fusion, and moreover, fission has no part in this.--としあき 10:16, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Two questions. First, what is the significance of "decomposition"?
Second, by substituting one (『分解の足』) but not the other (『融合の足』), you have made a very awkward sounding pair, despite how "correct" this may be. "Decomposition" is a very weird partner to "fusion", especially when "fusion" in this context will automatically be reinterpreted to "nuclear fusion", so either decomposition needs to go, or a substitute word in place of fusion needs to exist. - Kiefmaster99 10:48, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Linguistically, it is clear that the other is "fusion" since nuclear fusion is 核融合. However, 分解 is used more like 化学分解 (chemical decomposition) or 光分解 (photodecomposition), and after searching around, it is clear that there is no possible way of interpreting it to mean fission.
More conceptually, though, since Utsuho's ability is fusion and not fission, it makes sense to have one and not the other. I would suppose that "decomposition" would mean some kind of decomposition occurring as an intermediate within fusion, but not nuclear fission itself.--としあき 10:55, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Well that's the problem. I'm left scratching my head as to the significance of "decomposition", and like the person who supplied fission in the first place, or the person who reverted it, am left to interpreting it as "fission". As of now, "decomposition" sticks out like a very sore thumb, and even with that TL note, readers will wonder "well WTF does decomposition even mean then?". In the context of nuclear physics, it can only refer to a fission process. Otherwise, please explain to me more precisely how "decomposition" can be interpreted, and elaborate on your example. - Kiefmaster99 11:14, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
It is unclear that it is supposed to mean anything at all, since they are just names. However, since it was described that Utsuho uses all three legs to "manipulate the ultimate energy," which is presumably fusion, then I do not know of any literature that describes "fission occurring within fusion," although I know that fission could be a trigger for it (but my knowledge on this is admittedly thin), since fission is always used to describe a whole process. On the other hand, "decomposition" could conceivably be used as a word to mean some decay process within fusion. Therefore, it seems to be an inconsistency to say that she uses a "leg of fission" for fusion.--としあき 11:36, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
It turns out that my knowledge might have really been thin. If "alpha decay" can be described as fission, it would make sense to say that fission occurs within fusion.--としあき 11:57, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
You're retarded. It's the Foot of Fission. 'Decomposition' is the word that has no business being here. Fission and Fusion are two sides of the same coin and if you had any knowledge in the actual field of nuclear engineering, you'd know that. That's why Utsuho has power over Fission and Fusion. Fusion may be the "main" side of it, but you cannot achieve fusion without fission.
"One leg is the Foot of Fusion. One leg is the Foot of Fission. And the third leg is the control rod which commands them." Exactly how do you think Utsuho has power over decomposition? She doesn't, you moron. She has power over fission.

I find your attitude quite lacking. "You're retarded"? It's quite clear that you're just here to make make personal attacks on me here.--としあき 18:05, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm not here to make personal attacks on you. I just hate your ideas. Not because I think you're stupid, but because I know that what you're saying is wrong. Unnamed Giant Catfish 12:05, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
I think there's better ways to get this stuff across, on both sides. Please refrain from name calling, thanks. Momiji 16:13, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Okuu ate Yatagarasu?

Whey does the article claim that Okuu ate the Yatagarasu when her profile doesn't say anything to that effect?Imosa (talk) 19:06, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Have a look at Reimu & Suika's Scenario. Yatagarasu was directly named. ♥★♦ (talk) 20:22, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

My rough impression: "nomikomu" is not just "eat" — it represents making the thing in the mouth into the throat, no matter if it's chewed or not. The word is also used for some metaphorical meanings: (a big power) getting another small group in control, like M&A, and the understanding merely what is told (ex: "hanashi ga nomikomenai"). Both has the image of making something into the stomach for performer's will.
then, Okuu's profile says: She was enveloped in light, and she felt someone entering her body. When she came to, her body had changed greatly. It should show it's not Okuu-chan's own willing embrace but Kanako & Suwako's peremptory compulsion that enabled Okuu-chan to have Yatagarasu's strength in herself. So I think "eat" is not better for that situation. --masuo64 Talk 02:35, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
My indication is for Okuu-chan's profile, not for dialog of SA, since Suika must guess a weak crow can't make Yatagarasu in control. --masuo64 Talk 02:42, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Where to put new information about the derivation of Utsuho's character title

I've just got known the original phrase of Utsuho's character title "熱かい悩む神の火" (atsukai nayamu kami no hi) is in the 5th section of the 1st volume of Nihon Shoki. Link: Waseda University's Digital Archive (no.12 image):

一書曰伊弉冉尊旦生火神軻遇突智之時悶熱懊惱...

It would be rendered into current style of KANJI and interpreted in KUNDOKU:

一書に曰く、イザナミノミコト、旦に火の神カグツチを生まむとする時に、悶熱ひ懊悩み...

The bold part is read as "atsukai nayami" The equivalent part of a translation is:

One version says, Izanami no Mikoto, when she was giving birth to the fire god Kagutsuchi, was troubled by the heat...

In addition, I consulted a reference book ("Nihon Shoki", Iwanami Bunko) and it said about the expression:

"It means 'to suffer heat'. 'Atsu' of 'atsukai' is the stem of 'hot' (atsui)".

So this hypothesis should be probable, I think. In this part many islands and many gods were born from Izanami, the first woman appearing in Nippon Shoki. But the heat of the last child Kagutsuchi tormented her, and she died. (Kojiki says on the equivalent scene in more open expression "her vagina was burned.")
The god Kagutsuchi probably seems to have no relation to Yatagatarasu, but this information is worth adding, since most of fans find Utsuho's title a little awkward as Japanese phrase. And now, I wonder where to put this data. Fandom of Utsuho's article? Translation of dialogs of SA like this one? Or the list of Character Titles? What do you think about it? --masuo64 Talk 05:58, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Such information as character titles are part of the design of a character. I would say under the Character Design header, maybe creating a new subheader with "character title" or something. ☢ Quwanti 12:15, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Right foot

I know it's been said that the lump of material on Utsuho's right foot is a reference to Chernobyl's Elephant's Foot, but could it have anything to do with the process of electrolysis, in which there are two rods, the anode and the cathode, and the products of the reaction will form as a solid lump on one of the rods where the (usually) liquid or gaseous produce is invisible at the other rod? Do her legs represent the two rods? —Preceding unsigned comment added by MagicNineball (talkcontribs) 12:01, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
