Notes
- ↑ Gangoji (元興寺) was a temple that Soga no Umako, the father on the person whom Tojiko was based after, built. The story of Gagoze (元興寺), its youkai, (also known as the Oni of Gangoji) went as follows: It was the time of Bitatsu-Tenno. In Ayuchi no Koori (尾張国阿育知郡) Katawa no Sato (片輪里) near present-day Furuwataricho, Naka Ward, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, there was a farmer to whom appeared a lightning god in the shape of a child with a flash of lightning. The farmer was about to kill with his cane, when the lightning god begged for his life, so the farmer then thought he ought to help, so it could be said that a powerful child like a lightning god has been granted. The farmer responded to the lightning god's request and built a ship, and went back to the sky with lightning. Before long, the farmer's wife gave birth to a child, which should be said to be a heaven-sent child by the lightning god. Its head was wrapped with a snake, and it had a strange appearance with its head and tail hanging towards the back of its head. It had super-strength as the lightning god said, and at the age of 10, he had power such that one could boast of such that he would win compared to the power of the king of the royal family. Afterwards, this kid became the child of the Gangoji. At that moment, there continued to be incidents every night where the child of the belfry died of unnatural deaths, and it was a rumor that they were killed by oni. Saying that he himself will catch the oni, on a certain night he waited on the belfry in watch. At the time of early dawn, the oni appeared, and catching its hair, was dragged around. At the time dawn came, the oni completely torn off its hair and ran away. Pursuing its bloodstain, it continue all the way to the grave of a rowdy manservent who once worked for Gangoji. The manservent's departed soul had become a spirit and made appearances. The hair of this spirit became a treasure of Gangoji. The child who even had super-strength afterwards finally entered priesthood and is said to have become a dojo instructor.
- ↑ 雨の磐舟 is a pun of 天の磐船 "ame no iwafune". According to legend, Nigihayahi no Mikoto, the founding father of the Mononobe clan, descended from heaven in the rock ship "Ame no Iwafune".
- ↑ Haibutsu Kishaku, the anti-Buddhism campaigns that happened several times in Japan's history, in which many temples and statues were burned
- ↑ Sakuraiji, built by Soga no Iname (Tojiko's grandfather), was said to be Japan's first proper Buddhist temple, but it was burned down by the anti-Buddhist Mononobe clan.
- ↑ A seidoujo (聖童女) is a girl before her first period (around ten-year-old) who is tasked to serve food to the sun goddess.
