Perfect Memento in Strict Sense (Mentioned in article)

Tenma (天魔) is an enigmatic character, only known to be the chief of the tengu on the Youkai Mountain. They were first mentioned as the Tengu boss in the Tengu section of Perfect Memento in Strict Sense.

Concept

Name

The first character of Tenma, Ten () means "heaven" and the second, ma () means "demon".

When the Hindi god Māra was adapted to Japanese Buddhism, it was translated as "天魔" (temma), the abbreviation form of "第六天魔王 (dai-roku temma-ou) — ra (), the king () of the sixth dimension of god's living (第六天), which is the top dimension of the desire world. He was originally a Buddhist god, but Japanese people have had him identified with tengu, so he was commonly seen to be the boss of tengu.

There are some others who are called Tenma, but among Touhou fans, it is almost a general idea that the Tenma is inspired by Grand Emperor Sutoku[1] because he became a tengu after his death to be feared by people and he is counted as one of so-called "the three evilest youkai": the other two are Tamamo no Mae and Shuten Douji, who Shunten Douji inspires Suika.

Tenma is sometimes confused with the term "great tengu" who are a management type of tengu (see Perfect Memento in Strict Sense: Tengu).

Story

Mountain of Faith

In Mountain of Faith, the great tengu (management types, not to be confused with the boss tengu, Tenma) receives a report from Momiji about intruders on the mountain and sends her and Aya to investigate. After discovering that they weren't hostile, Tenma and the Mountain God (presumably Kanako) decided to pursue friendly relations, though the full details of the discussion were kept secret.
