Afterword
When did it begin? As a kid, I used to love going to the fireworks festival with my family, but gradually I started to hate the crowds and bug bites and generally began thinking of it as a pain. I've even thought that staying home by myself playing with my phone was a more fun and productive use of my time. But at this fireworks contest, there was no room for such thoughts. Maybe it's because there are fewer cynics in Gensokyo, so they all earnestly faced the festivities head on.
The fireworks festival instigated by the danmaku pictures on my phone was crashed by intruders partway through and changed into something more dangerous, but luckily no one was really hurt. Thinking back, while it stayed exciting all the way to the end, that was thanks to the staff's quick thinking in adapting to the intruders and playing it by ear.
While I meant this book to just be an album of Gensokyo's youkai, in the end it became a record of this mysterious fireworks festival, along with the somehow wonderful behavior of Gensokyo's humans and youkai. When things were going as planned, these girls honestly enjoyed the fireworks like children, and even when their lives were on the line still managed to play their parts to the fullest, and to enjoy themselves to the fullest. When I returned to reality, it only made me realize just how weirdly unnatural everything was.
Now, it doesn't really matter, but I'm sure you're curious so I'll jot it down. The winner of the fireworks contest was... Miss Toyosatomimi no Miko. Certainly, no one could beat her in the flashy, overwhelming brilliance of her danmaku, nor in how safe she made it (not to mention how many times she entered). I mean, we kind of stopped judging partway through so it gets a little murky, but even so, if anyone was going to win, it'd pretty much have to be her. She can also be a little... pushy. Well, I guess you could say the judges weren't brave enough to give the win to anyone else.
By the way, Sagume Kishin showed up at the end, but according to Yukari, who ended up in the judges' seats somewhere along the way, she was invited on the one in a million chance that we'd need her "power to peacefully change this fireworks contest that had fallen into chaos back into a boring one." I suppose in Gensokyo there are even people with such niche and unusable powers.
Anyway, I think I'd like to leave this book as a reference for the all-important Secret Sealing Club. To be honest, even if I upload pictures of Gensokyo to social media, I don't even get any flames, let alone likes. What's most important on social media is understanding, and second is jealousy. No one's going to understand the Secret Sealing Club activities, and there's nothing they need to be jealous of either, so I doubt this is the sort of material that would spread. But I don't care if nobody else understands. Danmaku is undoubtedly real to me.
