Afterword
Hello, this is ZUN. Thank you for picking up this book.
It's been 10 years since the previous work, "the Grimoire of Marisa." (Seriously?!) The theme of this series isn't to use spellcards as a setting reference work, but as some other kind of work.
Especially in this work, where I completely ignored the original meaning that spellcards had and tried to reestablish a different premise. The previous work had no story at all, so this time I treated it as more of a story than a reference book. As a result, while I established it as a geeentle fireworks contest, the people of Gensokyo weren't going to let that happen. Don't you think trouble showing up partway through, and people working behind the scenes, gave rise to some complex relationships between the characters? Introducing characters feels much weightier than introducing danmaku.
While at first glance it looks like a reference book, as you read through the judges' comment in order, the story begins to unfold. It may be a bit of a pain, but it was written under the assumption that the comments would be read in order. But if you just want to know the broad strokes, you should be fine just reading the comic portions.
Still, there are a lotta lotta danmaku that just wouldn't work in the fireworks setting (laugh). When I try to imagine how they'd look from the audience's perspective, it just makes my head hurt. But if you look at it positively, I think that's a chance to interrogate the danmaku theory I have in my head, and come up with new ideas.
Moving on, none of the danmaku from "the Grimoire of Marisa" appear in this book. While this isn't necessarily what the audience might want, we were proactively focusing on characters who have appeared since then. For that reason, even characters who you'd think would show up to this sort of festival do not. But personally, I see it as "they did show up, they were just left out of the book." Perhaps even the characters who didn't show up put on some kind of performance, got thrashed by Reimu in the comments, and were completely cut off by Seija.
Still, there sure are a lot of danmaku where they throw out physical objects, aren't there? Where do they hide all that stuff?
