User's Comment: I'm getting a strong reaction from the pendulum. And it's completely fixed... There might be something incredible lurking in this contest! Whenever the pendulum fixes like this, it's reacting to aggressive youkai aura.

Reimu
(7)

It's making an interesting pattern there. Not bad, as fireworks.

Marisa
(4)

The large, red bullets just crudely shot to kill. They're not beautiful at all. Kind of a waste of the nice geometrical pattern.

Sumireko
(8)

I've got my own pendulum too. It's one of the standard occult tools. But yours seems way more real...

Sakuya
(5)

And now a rat pops out. I'm sure what you're looking for is in the trash by the food stands, rat.

Youmu
(9)

Oh, how pretty... It's got a mysterious sparkle.

Final score
(7)

A geometrical danmaku accented by a pendulum that sparkles like a gem. Apparently a pendulum is like a gem that you use when you're looking for something, but what is she looking for?

User's Comment: I found a mountain of treasure! Is that what all this youkai aura is coming from? Well, whatever, to be honest I can find treasure whenever I want, I'm just using this to shoot danmaku. Nothing is more attractive than throwing gold around! Or so my master says.

Reimu
(8)

Throwing around so much gold is glorious... I mean, tacky!

Marisa
(8)

Obviously this isn't real gold. ...Right? Wait, no, but maybe...

Sumireko
(8)

Wow, there's so much gold it stops looking valuable! But it has a strong, oppressive feeling to it anyway.

Sakuya
(8)

So the glitter of the gold becomes that small danmaku. It seems the gold itself houses an untouchable amount of magical energy.

Sanae
(8)

You said you found treasure, but are you sure it's not just the kappa's treasure? I'm sure they'll beat her up.

Final score
(4)

Blinded by the glimmer of gold, we were unable to make accurate assessments and gave out a series of high scores. But when you think about it objectively, it's just a bunch of gold falling down and piling up. Because the treasure was picked up by the kappa without distributing it to the judges, points were deducted.[1]

User's Comment: Nazrin must have misunderstood. I meant that since the allure of treasure is hard to resist, we need to be careful not to misuse it. But, well, why don't I show you the brilliance of REAL treasure.

Reimu
(9)

S-So bright... I certainly can't resist the allure of this treasure.

Marisa
(9)

What flashy danmaku. The way it even lines up the dubious fluctuations from the flash of light is beautiful.

Sumireko
(10)

Wonderful! I dunno if this is a treasure or not, but in terms of impressiveness and brilliance, and even the element of surprise, this is a beautiful spellcard.

Sanae
(6)

You're all just being fooled by the shine of that pagoda. I'm skeptical that it's even a treasure at all. Are we sure this isn't all a scam?

Sakuya
(8)

It's beautiful how the lasers get thrown into disarray.

Final score
(9)

This isn't necessarily because of the power of the treasure, but this danmaku had the beauty to dazzle the eyes. I'd like to borrow it for a-- I mean, I'd like to study its brilliance. For reference. I'm definitely not praising it so she'll share it with me... okay, maybe I'm a little jealous.

User's Comment: As the treasure has always been filled with magical energy, the power of the pagoda is not my own. So now I'll abandon the power of treasures and show you the Buddhist arts I've obtained through my training. What follows is no cheap trick, but danmaku that would please a master.

Reimu
(4)

Hmm. I don't get it.

Marisa
(8)

An odd spellcard made up of a lattice of lasers and countless flames. I don't mind it.

Sumireko
(8)

This must be what they call the Diamond Realm Mandala. Diamond, diamond... hey! She didn't throw away all her treasure!

Sanae
(4)

So how are you supposed to actually dodge it, with that lattice of lasers up...?

Youmu
(10)

Just seeing it is so calming for some reason. I guess the ideas of Vajrayana Buddhism suit me well.

Final score
(7)

A difficult spellcard, both visually and as danmaku. The audience was also divided in their opinion. A lot of people are asking what it's supposed to represent anyway. However, the moment you imagine trying to dodge it, that's when you fall into despair.

User's Comment: I wasn't so sure about a fireworks contest, but it's looking like it's just a contest to surprise people the most. And if that's what it is, then I'm not losing! Our fists that shake heaven and earth will knock your socks off!

Reimu
(2)

And another person who's missing the point shows up. And isn't he obviously a youkai?

Marisa
(6)

Well, she's not wrong about the surprising us bit. But even adults are pissing their pants right about now.

Sumireko
(9)

Ah ha ha, what the heck?! In what world is a bald old man throwing punches supposed to be fireworks?

Sakuya
(6)

I can't stab him with my knives...? I'd like to avoid making an enemy out of this nyuudou.

Sanae
(8)

Now that I look again, the nyuudou is pretty impressive... But you can also see hints of his kindness here too. He'd never hit anyone directly.

Final score
(6)

While we don't give scores to danmaku made in teams, on close examination it turns out the nyuudou does all the work, so this counts. However, this controversial performance has planted the seeds of doubt in the audience. Are these really fireworks?

User's Comment: C'mon, Unzan, don't let up! There shouldn't be any danmaku with more impact than ours! Fear and joy are connected by surprise. So if we surprise the audience while barely not hurting then, we can give them the ultimate joy!

Reimu
(1)

Yeah, there are definitely people noticing that Unzan's a nyuudou now. Oh well.

Marisa
(8)

When they go so hard on the idiocy of this, even the audience starts to laugh.

Sumireko
(8)

OMG, he shot eyebeams lololol! I can't stop laughing! Seriously, I can't breathe lolololol

Sanae
(8)

The breezes he makes from almost hitting the ground feels nice. You can get used to the strangest things, huh?

Youmu
(8)

Sheesh, I'm laughing so hard... Please forgive me.

Final score
(8)

A lot of the crowd seems to have realized that there are youkai behind the fireworks, but thanks to this spellcard that transformed their fear into laughter, they easily accepted that this was all just a youkai performance. Honestly, part of me wants to thank her for lifting a weight off our shoulders.

Notes

  1. All the scorers added the same point "eight". It might be a parody of comments left at Nicovideo and Bilibili; the users there have a custom of typing a number of eights in order to congratulate a speaker when s/he enters and exits. One of Japanese pronunciations of "eight" is "hachi". It is similar to the Japanese onomatopoeia of clapping their hands "pachi-pachi".
