Here, you're first presented with the list of all characters you've obtained. Note that you can own multiple copies of each character, though you can't deploy more than one copy at once. Extra copies can either be used for limit breaking or converted into resources. To convert them into resources, use the gray おわかれ ("part ways") button at the bottom-right of the character list. Doing this gives you money, energy, and blue tokens (割符 / "warifu," which are an medieval Japanese equivalent of checks or money orders).

Tapping on a character brings you to their details screen, where you can check their stats and abilities, and also take advantage of the various ways to strengthen them. At a glance, the screen tells you their current overall strength rating, the energy cost required to deploy them, their stats, and a list of all their moves. Tapping on any move brings up the detailed breakdown of that move's damage instances, the same as is brought up in battle if "Show confirmation of command details" is enabled.

There are a few other things you can check or set here. Along the left, you can change the girl's '''outfit''' if you have multiple (these seem to cost real money). You can also change the girl's '''voice''' pack; each girl has 3 voices, and the voice screen allows you to hear various lines in each voice. The '''lock''' icon lets you lock the character, preventing you from accidentally converting her into resources or using her as a material in a limit break.

The girl's '''condition''' is indicated by the golden sparkle above her level. If there is more than one sparkle, then that means her condition is above average, and she will gain extra experience. One way to increase condition is by leaving her in the terakoya with a lot of food for a while. The girl's '''trust level''' is indicated by the heart. It's unclear what effect this has, but it seems to be increased by leaving her on your home screen for a while. Both these icons can be tapped to get a description of their current state.

Battle Mechanics

The main battle menu.
The in-battle options menu.
The confirmation screen you get if you have "Show confirmation of command details" checked.

At the start of each turn, you're presented with the battle menu on the right. The game's tutorial missions do a decent job of showing you where the clickable buttons are, but the actual mechanics are probably less clear if you can't read Japanese. Each girl has the same general types of actions available to them.

Basic attacks

Each girl has two basic attacks: a spread shot, and a focus shot (the two big buttons at the bottom). The spread shot is usually less powerful than the focus shot, but it generates more power (P). And conversely, the focus shot is usually more powerful, but generates less power.

With each attack, the things to notice are the CP (combat power), the targeting type (single or all), and the elements.

  • The CP of a move is an estimate of how much damage it will do -- a higher number means more damage. Note that the CP number is calculated against the currently selected enemy. You can change which enemy is selected by tapping on it.
  • The targeting type of a move can be either single-target (単体) or all-target (全体). A single-target attack will only hit the currently selected enemy, while an all-target attack will hit all enemies regardless of which one is selected. In this screenshot, Cirno's spread shot is single-target, while her focus shot is all-target.
  • The elements of a move are indicated by the icons above the button. Each additional icon represents an additional "instance" of damage. So, under the conditions in this screenshot, both of Cirno's moves do 2 instances of typeless damage (無) and 1 instance of water damage (水).

At the left side of the screen, just below the selected enemy's health bar, you can check the enemy's elemental resistances. From left to right, the elements are sun (日), moon (月), fire (火), water (水), wood (木), metal (金), earth (土), and star (星). An orange upward arrow in the element's space means that enemy will take more damage from that element, while a blue downward arrow means they will take less damage. Additionally, hitting an enemy with one of their weaknesses removes one of their shields (the glass-looking hexagons to the left of their health bar). If they lose all of their shields, they will take extra damage from all subsequent attacks.

Spell Cards

The spell card button is to the left of all the attack elements, and naturally, pressing it brings up the list of that character's spell cards. On a basic level, spell cards function pretty much the same as basic attacks; you can see the CP value, the targeting type, and the elements of each spell card along the top of each icon. Spell cards can have other effects that basic attacks don't, but the better place to check on these effects is the character's page from the home screen.

Power and Boost

Girls generate power (P) from performing attacks and inflicting damage. Each girl has her own separate power value. Power has 2 effects. Firstly, for every one unit of power that the girl has (rounded down to the nearest whole number), the "level" of her basic attacks increases. The higher the attack's level, the more damage it does. Secondly, exactly 1.00 power can be spent to add a boost to the girl's next attack. Each boost stack increases the power of that move by increasing the number of damage "instances" attached to it. In the above screenshot, Cirno currently has 1 boost active, which is what added the second and third icons to her elements. (By default, both of Cirno's attacks just have one instance of typeless (無) on them.) Up to three boosts can be activated in a single turn, and this would cost 3.00 power total. You can keep tapping the boost button to cycle between using 0, 1, 2, and 3 stacks. Boosts apply to both basic attacks and spell cards, and the latter can result in extremely high damage.

Graze

Each girl starts each battle with 5 "graze" shield icons, shown in the "graze" button on the right. If you tap the graze button, one shield icon will be expended to give that girl one stack of perfect dodge (represented as a shield around that girl) for that turn. Each stack of perfect dodge completely avoids damage from a single enemy attack. This means, for instance, if Cirno uses 1 shield icon on her turn to gain 1 stack of perfect dodge, and then all three enemies attack her on that turn, she will avoid the first attack but still be hit by the other two. Similarly to boost, up to 3 stacks can be used in one turn, and tapping the graze button repeatedly will cycle between 0, 1, 2, and 3 stacks. However, you cannot use a girl's very last graze stack to dodge.

Note that the player's characters also have their own elemental strengths and weaknesses, just like enemies. If a girl is hit by her elemental weakness, one of her shield icons will break, just like what happens with enemies. And if all of her shield icons break, not only will she not be able to dodge, but she will also take more damage from attacks. Though, by the time this happens, she'll probably have already been knocked out anyway.

Change

When building your team, you are allowed to put 3 girls in the front line and 3 girls in the reserves. The front line is initially deployed, but each girl can be swapped for their corresponding reserve by using the "Change" button in the top-right. However, there is a 5-turn cooldown on changing.

Skills

Skills can be activated via the circular "Skill" button on the right. Each character has up to 3 skills, with the later ones unlocked as they rank up. Skills can apply various buffs and debuffs to allies and enemies. Unlike all of the other actions, skills activate immediately, without waiting for the turn to begin. Because of this, tapping a skill always brings up a confirmation screen where the effects and cooldown of the skill are shown. Once the action is confirmed, the skill activates.

Options Menu

The options menu (top middle, labeled "Menu") has a few things that may be useful. "Shorten battle animations" does what it says. "Retire" just ends the battle without winning it, and returns to the home screen. Note that you do not lose the energy that it would have cost to clear the stage, so you can use this freely if things aren't going well. Along the top, the tabs for "Team information" and "Enemy information" allow you to view some more details about each side.

Lastly but maybe most interestingly, "Show confirmation of command details" causes each attack button to produce an additional confirmation screen, which has a more detailed breakdown of the attack's properties. You can see what element instances the attack will gain with additional boost stacks; the three yellow arrow segments on the right, from top to bottom, correspond to instances gained with 1, 2, and 3 stacks. If you tap on a specific element instance, you can see even more detailed information about the power, accuracy, and critical rate of that element instance. For a spell card, this screen also shows what additional effects are applied by the card before and after casting.

Interface

Home Screen

The THLW home screen with English labels.

Refer to the numbers in the above screenshot for these descriptions. Separate sections for some of these functions coming soon.

  1. Shop - The place where you can buy various items using in-game or real money. The icon of Nitori directly above this button (にとりの宅配便 / Nitori's Home Delivery Service) goes to a different tab of the same store. Note that, once you're on the store page, to get to the in-game money store (as opposed to the real money one), you have to click on the bottom-left button in the store (社務所 / Shrine Office).
  2. Companions - Takes you to the list of all the characters you've obtained.
  3. Cards - Takes you to the list of all the cards you've obtained.
  4. Facilities - Brings up the panel with the 4 facilities. From left to right:
    1. Shrine (generates energy)
    2. Offertory Box (generates money)
    3. Temple School / Terakoya (can assign characters here to receive EXP over time by using food items)
    4. Training Ground / Dojo (can increase characters' skill levels here)
  5. Tasks - Brings up the list of "tasks" (aka quests), and allows you to claim rewards for completed ones. On the quests screen, the orange button at the top-right lets you turn in all completed tasks at once.
  6. Prayers - The game's gacha spinner. You can check drop rates with the 詳細 (details) button in the top-right of the gacha screen.
  7. Exploration - Brings up the list of stages for you to attempt.
  8. Formation - Lets you make preset teams. You can drag and drop characters between different positions, which can be slightly convenient.
  9. Waifu - also an idiot in this case.
  10. Errands - Missions that you can send characters on, which get completed after some amount of real time. Notice that there are two tabs of errands -- the first one has errands that persist all day, while the second one has errands that expire after a while if not accepted.
  11. Events - Clicking on this brings up the current list of special events. These are the same ones that scroll by on the banner to the right.
  12. Illustrations - Here you can view character and card art, and also rewatch story scenes.
  13. Materials - You can see what items you have and how many.
  14. Deliveries - You can claim special rewards (e.g. from events) here.
  15. Notices - Various news about events and server maintenance.
  16. Menu - Has various options for voice, sound, and push notifications. You can also link your save data to your Twitter account, or generate a code to transfer save files between devices.
  17. Profile - Brings up your account's profile page. You can edit your player name, your protagonist's name, and your public comment. You can also change which girl is on your home screen.
  18. Energy - How much energy (霊P / "spirit P") you have.
  19. Money - How much money (賽銭 / "monetary offerings") you have.
  20. Crystals - How many crystals (封結晶 / "sealing crystals") you have.
