Project Translations is a Touhou Wiki Project formed to organize and improve all articles containing translations of official material from the games in the Touhou Project. If you would like to help, feel free to ask any questions on the Talk page and check out the to-do list on this page.
Project Translations
Scope and Aim
Project Translations covers any article containing translations of official material. This includes, but is not limited to, stage dialogue translations, profile translations, afterword translations, and translations of miscellany. If you think we've forgotten to include a page in this project, either add it yourself or bring it up on the Talk page if you're not sure.
Participants
To participate in this project, just add your username to the bottom of this list. It will make it easier to find people who can speak and translate Japanese, for example.
- Arknarok
- Darkslime
- NForza
- Code Slasher (mostly proofreading of English translations)
- Jjeinn-tae
- dSayonarab (on behalf of a translator, who does not have an account here)
- Kirisen
- _dk
General translation guidelines
Japanese
- This wiki uses Hepburn romanization; e.g. sha (instead of sya), chi (ti), ji (zi), shi (si), etc. This applies even when Kunrei-shiki is used in an official spelling (e.g. Fujiwara instead of Huziwara).
- Preserve obsolete kana (e.g. Tewi instead of Tei, Hinanawi instead of Hinanai)
- If you see a mistake in translation or writing, do not be afraid to change or debate it. More correct translations should be preferred over incorrect "established" ones.
- Just because a translation appears in a game patch does not make it 100% correct. Translations do change and become more accurate over time. Games may also have inherent limitations such as maximum line length.
Translation consistency
- There are various places where much of the same dialogue is used for multiple characters. If you are going to edit a piece of dialogue, especially for an enemy character, please make sure you check the other routes to see if her or his quote is the same. For example, Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream's story mode on stage 8 and stage 9 have a lot of common dialogue.
- There are pages containing translations of character Titles, Abilities and Spell Card names. Please keep translations of those consistent with translations on appropriate page. If some translation should be changed, it's best to start with those pages and update mentioned sources and character's page after that.
- There are many terms that need to be kept consistent across games. Please see the Translation Glossary for details.
Structure
Many different kinds of articles exist under this project, and each will have its own editing standards and organizational structure, as defined below. Every page in the project should have the following template at the bottom of the page, but above any navboxes.
Project Translations Notice
This page is part of Project Translations, a Touhou Wiki project that aims to ensure the quality of translations of all official material in the Touhou Project. |
Stage translation pages
The top of the page should have a SubpageNav template that points forward and backward. The ordering is generally "prologue -> main scenario for x character -> extra stage scenario for x character". Please look at existing pages if you aren't sure.
Each stage in the game should fall under a second-level header (==, two equals signs). Directly after that should be an image of the "title" of the stage using a "frame" parameter. This should put it into a frame at the right side of the screen. A translation of the stage's title should be placed as its caption. For example:

The next thing under each stage header should be the dialogue, which uses a template at the beginning and a template at the end. Between this comes the actual translation. Usually first is the title of the stage:

Whenever a BGM change occurs, this should be inserted:

Each line of spoken dialogue should use a DialogTable template like this:

If there are multiple lines, please separate both the Japanese source and the translation using a line break as shown in the example. When a character enters the screen or is defeated, something like the below example should be used (depending on the situation):

When the dialogue branches, use the same template:

When the dialogue would branch to specific endings, use the statusnr argument after a branch:

Special character introductions (such as when the enemy's name comes up on screen with their title) should be handled like this:

Repeat this process for each stage. At the end of the page there should be a second-level header called Notes, which contains a smallrefs template, and nothing else. Below that should be a copy of the navigation header, and below that the navbox for the game.
Prologues and afterwords
At the top of a Prologue article, put a SubpageNav template that points ahead towards each character's route. Do not use more than one template - use the R1, R2, etc. arguments to specify additional routes.
The prologue should generally be split up according to the location of the action, or according to multiple empty lines between paragraphs. See Double Dealing Character/Story/Prologue for an example of this.
For each section, use a

at the top, and a

at the bottom.
Each line of text should be placed in a TranslateTable as well:

For spoken dialogue, use the blockquote argument, and format the dialogue as <name>: "<text>" in English:

For afterword pages, please view Double Dealing Character/Translation/Afterword for a shining example.
Music comment pages
Music pages should be a subpage called Music directly under the game it a part of, example: Double Dealing Character/Music.
Music pages should be split into two level 2 headers - one called "Music List", and one called "Notes". Notes is, of course, where the notes go, and should only include the reference template (with one column): smallrefs
The actual music list should simply be a list of MusicRoom templates, one for each song, in the order they appear in the sound test. For example:

As you can see there need to be <br /> tags after each line break in the game/translation.
Please refer to Double Dealing Character/Music for an example.
