Tsukasa Kudamaki (菅牧 典 Kudamaki Tsukasa) is the Stage 5, 6, and Extra Stage midboss of Unconnected Marketeers.
General Information
Personality
Tsukasa embodies many of the tropes of being a fox spirit, talking out of both sides of her mouth, and generally attempting to manipulate people into doing her bidding through deceit or outright lies. In Unconnected Marketeers, she is generally playful and unassuming, until the protagonist gets too close to the truth, in which case she turns somewhat vicious.
Abilities
- Capable of slipping into places where one's soul is weak
She can "slip into cracks in a target's heart". As a kuda-gitsune, this could possibly mean that she can possess one's mind: in her in-game dialogue, she uses this in order to rile up Momoyo Himemushi and Chimata Tenkyuu, causing them to fight you.
Background Information
Origin
Kuda-kitsune are mythological beings associated with foxes, weasels, or larval rollers. According to tradition, they answer questions to those who conjure them up or take possession of people. In Touhou, however, the main interpretation shown is that kuda-kitsune first bring wealth, but over time multiply in such a way that they harm their owners, whether through high financial costs as in mythology or by stealing their life force as in Touhou. In Chapter 8 of Wild and Horned Hermit, Reimu Hakurei temporarily falls victim to a trick by a kitsune who steals Reimu's life force together with a kuda-kitsune.
Kuda-kitsune are also called Izuna (飯 綱), which is similar to the surname of their mistress (Iizunamaru).
Name
Her given name, Tsukasa (典), typically read ten (てん), means "law" or "ceremony." Alternate meanings for the kana tsukasa (つかさ) also include chief (官) and hill (阜), which may be of more significance.
Her surname, Kudamaki (菅牧), means sedge pasture.
Design
Tsukasa has blonde, shoulder-length hair, that partially covers her face and has light-brown to yellow eyes. She has big fox ears with white points and a fluffy foxtail. She wears plainly white, one-part clothing, similar to a Onesie, with green bands at the Hemming. On the left thigh is a turquoise flower pattern. Besides that, she wears white socks and is holding some sort of test tube vial in her hand.
She holds her right hand in a pose that is supposed to represent a fox.
Story
Games
From stage 5 onwards, Tsukasa appears in every stage, i.e. 5, 6 and extra, as a mid-boss and in dialogue with the stage boss in order to manipulate them. The protagonist beats her every time, but is drawn into another fight each time by Tsukasa's lies and tricks. As Megumu Iizunamaru's consultant, she was also involved in building the company that triggered the Unconnected Marketeers incident and, despite her seemingly small role in the background, she can be seen as one of the central antagonists.
Relationships
She is Megumu Iizunamaru's right-hand man and seems loyal to her. She uses the suffix -sama for them. In fact, however, she plays her just like her allies, the goddess Chimata Tenkyuu and the Oomukade Momoyo Himemushi. Megumu trusts her without hesitation and seems to appreciate her, as she sends her away before her boss fight, apparently out of concern that Tsukasa might be injured.
As a messenger, Tsukasa brings her messages from Megumu Iizunamaru and vice versa. The Kitsune uses this by announcing that she will report Momoyo's apparent failure to the Tengu when the protagonist and Misumaru Tamatsukuri have seemingly entered the mines as thieves. In response to this threat, Momoyo attacks the two in order to eliminate the alleged thieves. However, Momoyo is again able to threaten Tsukasa and blackmail her into silence, although it is possible that this was also part of her plan. She also addresses the Oomukade with the ending -dono.
The goddess is also manipulated by the fox. It should be noted, however, that it is unclear whether, after Megumu Iizunamaru's betrayal, Chimata actually believes that the kitsune is more loyal to her than to her actual mistress. So Chimata sends her back to Megumu and titled her as her "pet animal". Tsukasa, on the other hand, is submissive and adds the very polite suffix -dono to Chimata's name.

Additional Information
- Tsukasa is the only midboss-only character to have dialogue portraits and an in-game name and title introduction.
- She is technically not the only midboss-only character to have dialogue, though, as Soga no Tojiko says a few lines during Toyosatomimi no Miko's spell card, Summon "Royal Clan's Chaotic Dance".
- Tsukasa and Rin Kaenbyou are the only Touhou characters to appear as midbosses in three consecutive stages.
- Unlike Rin, Tsukasa keeps the same appearance throughout all of her encounters, and was never the main boss in any stage.
- Tsukasa is the only enemy character who uses spell cards but never with a spell background.
