Revision as of 18:57, 30 June 2012

This article lists characters who appear as Midbosses within the Touhou Project, but have not been given official names or even enough information. There are 16 characters on this page in chronological order (from the early PC-98 games to the latest Windows games). "UB 3rd Stage Midboss" is semi-official. Most of these characters are featured in the PC-98 games.

Sprite of the midboss in Story of Eastern Wonderland
Species

None, simply a machine

Location

Just outside the Hakurei Shrine (?)

Relationships

Rika (Creatior)

This tank attacked Reimu and Genjii before the Flower Tank on the first stage of Story of Eastern Wonderland. Rika said that everything on the first stage was built by her, so this tank is obviously hers.

Chacacter Basis

Design

The sprite of the tank shows it has large brown caterpillar tracks with a black square turret. The turret seems to have a red roof with a Shimenawa on it and a black gun. On top of the roof, it has four symbols and one of them is a Yin-Yang.

Additional Information

  • It's unknown whether it is automatic or piloted by Rika.
  • The tank is the first ever midboss in the whole series.

SoEW 2nd Stage Midboss
Sprite of the midboss in Story of Eastern Wonderland
Species

Youkai?

This character attacked Reimu and Genjii in the beginning of Story of Eastern Wonderland's second stage.

Character Basis

Design

Her sprite shows that she has short, dark red hair tied with a red bow. She seems to wear a purple skirt and a purple shirt with white long sleeves. There is a jagged, red design along the hem of her dress and there appear to be a number of spirit-like objects around her.

Additional Information

  • Her bullets are the Kanji character "Noroi (, lit. "Curse").
  • Her design somewhat resembles Marisa Kirisame when she had red hair, and also Kotohime.

Fanon Culture

  • Her species is thought to be a Youkai. Because of this, some western fans call her the "Nameless Midboss Youkai".
  • Cursed Child (呪い子 Noroiko) seems to be a rather notable name for the Japanese fans to refer to this character.
  • In some fanart, she is drawn with either green or red eyes.

Additional Information

Fanon Culture

  • Due to it's looks, some western fans call this miboss the "Magic Mirror" or the "Magic Mirror Midboss", but due to the other mirror, it's better to refer to it as the "Magic Mirror (Demon)" or the "Magic Mirror Midboss (Demon)" to avoid confusion.

LLS Extra Stage Midboss

LLS Extra Stage Midboss
Sprite of the midboss in Lotus Land Story
Location

Unnamed Dream World

This mysterious ball appeared out of nowhere and attacked the heroines on the extra stage of Lotus Land Story.

Character Basis

Design

Its sprite shows that it's a white ball of light that flashes which has small sparkles around it.

Additional Information

  • It's the first character in the series to have no hit box for the player to hit.

Fanon Culture

There's a rather popular theory that this ball is Nue Houjuu, as she appears as a ball of light in Undefined Fantastic Object, with both dropping items when leaving the screen and giving an extra life if certain conditions are met. It's also possible that it was Yuuka Kazami, who became a similar ball of light during her second boss battle in Lotus Land Story. Icarus from the Seihou Project can also turn into a ball of light, but this one is highly unlikely due to its canon.

TD 1st Stage Midboss

TD 1st Stage Midboss
Sprite of the midboss in Ten Desires
Species

Divine spirit

Abilities

Summons spirits?

This character attacked the heroines in the first stage of Ten Desires. For why there were divine spirits even going to the Netherworld is unknown. There is a possibility that it is not a divine spirit at all, but a resident ghost of the Netherworld. However, Youmu is only interested on getting rid of the unwanted spirits, so this spirit is indeed not a resident of the Netherworld.

Character Basis

Design

Its sprite shows that it's a blue coloured divine spirit.

Additional Information

  • This character is the only Windows midboss to not have an official name. Daiyousei and koakuma are excluded since their name have been use by ZUN as a term.
  • It's shown during the midboss battle that red divine spirits appear around this spirit. It's possible that this spirit is able to summon more spirits around it. However, this has not been confirmed.

Fanon Culture

  • Due to its looks, some western fans call this midboss the "Nameless Midboss Divine Spirit".
  • It's been noted by many to be the most notable midboss-only character in the whole series without a name, since it's the first stage midboss of Ten Desires, which it self is a popular Windows game.
