SilSinn9801, known as Silent Sinner in Scarlet in the YouTube community and usually abbreviated as SilSinn in the video gaming community, is an independent chiptune musician specializing in ancient FM synthesis techniques and styles. He/she currently leads 東方 PMD98 Project (Tōhō PMD98 Project), a multi-national collaborative dōjin circle tasked with covering almost all Windows-era Tōhō music themes in the ancient FM-based PMD98 chip-music format (used by four of the first five Touhou games comprising the PC-98 era).

About SilSinn

Etymology

Silent Sinner in Scarlet

From his/her YouTube profile:

  • Sinner: we are all sinners.
  • Silent: not all sins can be publicly discussed.
  • Scarlet: the blood of some Holy one crucified by ancient Romans nearly 2000 years ago… the ONLY blood that can cleanse each/every sin in the world — even the silent ones.

The name Silent Sinner in Scarlet may look like a parody of Silent Sinner in Blue (replacing Blue with Scarlet, which also happens to be the surname of two famous sisters), but this is pure coincidence.

SilSinn9801
  • Sil: abbreviation of “Silent”.
  • Sinn: abbreviation of “Sinner”.
  • 9801: refers to a long-storied family of computers made by Japanese firm NEC and sold in Japan from the early 1980’s well into 2003: the PC-9801 series. The music compiled by Silent Sinner in Scarlet (abbreviated as SilSinn) resembles the kind of background music played by ancient video games made for the PC-9801 computers, including the first five Tōhō Project titles.

Musical background

Silent Sinner in Scarlet was inspired by the original musical works by Japanese video-game composers Nobuo Uematsu (of Final Fantasy fame), Revo (of Bravely Default fame), & ZUN, as well as Japanese anime composer Tatsuo Takai (who made the Astro Boy title theme).

Currently, he/she is composing/arranging/remixing music based on the Yamaha YM2608 (OPNA) FM-synthesizer soundchip. A 1:15-minute demo of his/her first original single can be listened to in his/her YouTube channel (which is otherwise over-populated with Tōhō covers); the full nearly-10-minute-long version can be found on various music-streaming platforms and apps (free and non-free) which will not be linked here so as to avoid making this section appear as free advertisement (and comply with this wiki’s anti-spam policies).

  • HypS’s FMDSP music player (for PC-9801-style music-playback visuals)
  • TAN-Y’s MSDP music player (for PC-9801-style music-playback visuals when PPZ8 .PZI PCM samples are used)
  • Neko Project 21 0.83k8/fmgen (PC-9821 emulator where either FMDSP or MSDP is run & live-captured from)
  • C60’s FMPMD2000 music emulator (to export PMD98 music to uncompressed-PCM .WAV files)
  • Nullsoft’s Winamp music player (to export each PMD98 track’s individual FM, SSG, & PCM audio channels –or stems– to uncompressed-PCM .WAV files for oscilloscoping)
  • Audacity (to process the .WAV files exported from either FMPMD2000 or Winamp)
  • LunarCast’s Mystic Square Toolkit (MSTK) (to make internal Mystic Square mods replacing certain stages & sprites with those made by his/her pixel-art contributors and certain music with his/her own PMD98 covers, for the purpose of generating genuine, NEC PC-9801 hardware-correct screenshots via Neko Project 21)
  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder x64 (to live-capture the screen while playing music on either FMPMD2000 or Neko Project 21)
  • GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) 2.10 (to create 16-color-palettized .PNG images using only 12-bit RGB colors supported in PC-9801 video hardware, and to edit some NP21-generated screenshots in post-production to add features not currently possible under the Mystic Square engine)
  • nyanpasu64’s corrscope (to render oscilloscope views of the individual PMD98 FM, SSG, & PCM audio channels recorded from Winamp)
  • VapourSynth R45 (to script application of retro PC color and transition effects to video and image sources, like those from above)
  • VirtualDub2 (to process VapourSynth scripts and generate retro-look visuals in uncompressed-RGB .AVI video)
  • CyberLink PowerDirector 15 (to compress PCM audio files to MPEG-4 AAC, combine them with retro visuals from above, and export resulting video to MPEG-4 AVC .MP4 for uploading to YouTube)

Interests outside music

SilSinn is a casual video gamer (the Nintendo 3DS is his/her preferred platform) and has an interest in researching multilingual features of some role-playing video games, often contributing to their respective wiki encyclopedia projects. Two examples are Bulbapedia (the oldest and most comprehensive Pokémon encyclopedia) and the Final Fantasy Wiki (one of the few serious encyclopedias still hosted on Wikia, in spite of all of its controversies after its absorption by FANDOM). He/she also enjoys slowly growing Wikipedia’s encyclopedic content (as SilSinn9821), especially with regards to tropical cyclones and radio/TV broadcasting.

Favorite Phrases

  • “I will remain silent on that question.”
  • “Thankee!”

Signature

‐‑Silent Sinner in Scarlet (a.k.a. SilSinn9801)💬

A well-constructed wikicode signature making smart use of Unicode characters seldom used by ordinary users, including one emoji pictogram:

  • Unambiguous regular hyphen (U+2010) at the beginning to prevent the signature from dragging any preceding word to the next line in case the signature doesn’t fit in the current line and the user forgets to type a normal space before appending the signature.
  • Non-breaking hyphen (NBHY, U+2011) that will always stay in the same line as the rest of the signature in case of a line break.
  • Five non-breaking spaces (NBSP, U+00A0) strategically placed across the signature to ensure it remains within a single line (rather than breaking from one line to another).
  • The emoji for 💬 SPEECH BALLOON (U+1F4AC), serving as a link to the user’s talk page.
  • Two word joiners (WJ, U+2060), which are essentially zero-width non-breaking spaces that ensure that no line breaks occur between ① the regular HYPHEN & the NON-BREAKING HYPHEN or ② between the username (actually a link to the user’s contributions page; the link to this userpage is the red bold-italic artist name) and the SPEECH BALLOON.

Character profiles

SilSinn9801 made contributions to a few character articles:

He/she is pissed off at Yen Press because of its questionable translation practices on the English version of Forbidden Scrollery, like ① translating miko () to “shrine priest” (a predominantly “masculine” noun; “shrine priestess” or “shrine maiden” would have been more appropriate because they are exclusively “feminine”) and ② calling Hieda no Akyū (稗田阿求) “Akyu Hiedano” (when “Akyū of Hieda” or “Akyuu of Hieda” would have been technically more acceptable). And it seems he/she is not alone on this opinion; and in case this tweet is erased by James7132 in the future, SilSinn9801 archived it here for posterity.

Templates

SilSinn9801, bringing here his/her knowledge of wikicode and conditional templates (stuff learned from Wikipedia and from his/her past incarnation on Wikia/FANDOM), contributed here a handful of templates:

Main Templates
  • {{Cite book}} (similar to {{Cite web}} but tailored to books rather than webpages; adapted from Wikipedia)

Language Interwikis

SilSinn9801 also added a few missing language interwikis to existing game-music articles:

SilSinn also helped fix some grammatical issues on the Spanish music pages for Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and Imperishable Night, as well as providing missing German titles for most of the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil themes.
