Have gotten totally hooked on everything Touhou. Found this wiki and desided to help.
First Touhou game: Phantasmagoria of Flower View v0.02 (free download from Shanghai Alice website).
First favorite character: Kirisame Marisa (mostly because her lasers owned ^_^).

When I started TH05 almost half a year had past since I started playing Touhou (and other shmups). This had made the feeling of Touhou beeing something new and exciting calm down. This, and the increase of difficulty compared to TH04, made me lose confidence in my gaming skills which led to more time between Touhou playing sessions (it didn't help that my friend had power played Guilty Gear over the summer and kicking my ass ever since -_-).
It wasn't until March 2008 when I really gave it a go again that I finally cleared it. Finally I can start playing the Windows games.
Ok. wow. I never thought I would have this much trouble with this game. But it sure was fun as hell.
I even tried extra stage for 2 month. Got to Flandre's 3:rd last spellcard on my best try.
It took some time, but my gameplay has levelled up a lot because of it. I may be ready for Hard difficulty now. :)
Well, this took longer than expected.
I 1cc ReimuA on normal after 2 month of gameplay, then decided to step up to Hard difficulty. And I must say, learn to play on Hard was a lot harder than I thought. It felt that I got nowhere. I danced through Alice's spellcards on normal, nothing like it on hard. Merlin Prismriver's first spell card killed me every time, unless I had 3-4 bombs I could toss at it. And Konpaku Youmu was a nightmare. I was lucky if I got to the last stage at all. I stopped playing for about half a year but finally beat it with Sakuya in April 2011. MarisaA showed to be a lot different to play, Sakuya could easily maim down the whole screen but Marisa only shoots straight. I had to dodge a lot more danmaku with her. Finally in January 2012 I beat it. MarisaA, MarisaB and ReimuA (again) in one go. Two weeks later I also beat it with ReimuB.
- Easiest to play was MarisaB. Her Master Spark made it extremely easy to beat the bosses, compared to all other character types.
- My favorite character type is ReimuB. I really hate her homing shots in type A, shooting straight with her type B is much easier when planning what to aim at and collecting score. And I like her small hit box and slow speed, much more fun to grace through hard spell cards.
It took a long time but I'm so glad I stepped up to Hard. I feel that this is more like how it's meant to be played. All spell cards have much more defined patterns and is much more beautiful to look at. As usual, I will try out Extra Stage, then it's time for the first fighting game in the series: TH07.5 IaMP. I can hardly wait.
2012-01-22 (later): I'll be damned. I beat Extra. First time I ever cleared an Extra Stage.
2014-01-19: I have no idea how I could forget to write about Phantasm stage. I´ve beaten it! In the 6th of May, 2012 I beat Yukari, the most awesome and hardest boss in Touhou I´ve ever met. It was 1 3/4 years ago but I remember the feeling well. Before this game I tried extra stage many times without clearing them, and in this game I wasn´t only able to clear extra but phantasm as well. I believe me starting to play on hard has made this possible. I´m right where I want to be in my Touhou gaming and I hope it will continue, me having fun and evolving as a player.
Playing a fighter needs a different strategy compared to a shmup. You can usually just sit down and play a shmup right away, since the controls are easy and mostly the same for every game. But fighters usually differs, and IaMP is definitely not an exception.
I made a lot of research on the game and saw a bunch of videos and read some tutorials before I even started playing. And in the beginning I sat in the Training Stage every day, just to get the hang of the game.
I've now beaten it with Reimu. It was fun to see how TasoFro mixed Touhou Damnaku into a fighting game. I think they did a really good job.
Though I'm really unsertain if I ever will be good at this game. Aparently I can beat in on normal but I've seen videos of human players versus each other and those matches are amazing to watch, but I'm nowhere near that level. It would be fun to load up CowCaster and play against others someday.
Beat Story Mode with Marisa. I learned a lot from watching match videos with Darkman, which is a really good japanese Marisa player. Though it was kind of irritating that Bellreisa talked so badly of Marisa in his commentary videos of the Bullet Action 3 tournament on YouTube. He really thinks that Marisa is a boring character. Oh well.
Next character to play is Sakuya.
And it's done. I've cleared Touhou Suimusou.
I can't thank Bellreisa enough. His commentary videos have been a great source for learning. I hope I can thank him someday.
There are some characters that I want to note. Alice was a character that I thought I would have a hard time learning but she was more straightforward than I thought. Patchouli is definitely a character I want to learn better. Her projectiles is the best in the game and from Bellreisas commentary videos you can see that she can do insane combos and pressure. Remilia was weird to play, but I got the hang of it with a little practice. Both Yuyuko and Yukari left me completely helples in the beginning. I didn't understand how to play them at all. Yuyuko is really defensive and Yukari is slooow. But after some training I found out that they were really fun to play with. I definitely want to train with them some more.
IaMP is really a fun fighting game that I hope I'll continue playing. Only problem is I don't know anyone who plays it. The few people I've found who likes Touhou only plays Hisoutensoku. Net play is an option but I'm afraid I'll have a hard time finding players there on my level. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.
Next up is, what I've heard, the easiest but most fun Touhou Shmup in the first part of the windows games (th06-th09.5), Imperishable Night.
Whoooh, it has been a long time since I wrote here last.
This game was really fun, though I´m afraid that my bombing skill has weakened because this game makes it so easy to death-bomb. The game felt very messy in the beginning since it has so many things in it´s system: Human/Youkai-mode, time-collection, enemy familiars etc. But after a while everything just sunk in piece-by-piece.
I´m so glad Spell Card practice was introduced in this game. The amount of time to learn spellcards from the later levels got shortened a lot. I hope this is included in later games.
Sakuya/Remilia and Youmu/Yuyuko was very different and very fun to play. Remilia has her familiar which stays in place. Not good against boses who move around but it led to new strategies for clearing levels. Yuyuko has massive shot spread and the Youmu/Yuyuko is very unique in that human-type has so much better attack strength than the Youkai counterpart. This made me want to use Youmu in boss fights but since she moves so fast it was most of the time impossible for me to use her. But since Youmu´s attack power ifs so great it was very effective to use her to kill familiars in spell cards (I´m especially thinking of Kaguya´s 'Divine Treasure "Salamander Shield"'), making them much easier to beat.
Again I was able to clear Extra Stage. I really hope I can continue clearing them, they are so much fun. But I feel Mokou was easier than Ran and Yukari in TH07 PCB Extra and Phantasm stage.
One thing that really bothered me in this game was that you didn´t have to survive the last spells of the final bosses to clear the game. The introduction of a survival spellcard at the end of PCB was something I really liked and I got me really pumped when I found out that they existed also in this game. I got so mad that when I didn´t need to clear them that I made them my personal goal for the game: to 1cc both routes and extra stage while also surviving all last spells on the last boss. In retrospect I can see why a player must beat them, THEY ARE INSANELY HARD! This one personal goal extended the time for me to beat the game with half a year or more! But I did it (only with one character pair though: Youmu/Yuyuko). This is the highest moment of my Touhou gaming thus far. I feel great. I feel that I really beat this game extensively. I know I can also clear them in single character mode but I´m not interested. I tried once with Reimu and it went fine. It was an interesting experience but nothing I feel makes me want to play the game all over again.
While writing this I still have one bad ending left to clear. I also has some bad endings left to get in TH07.5 IaMP. But otherwise I´m ready to tackle the GAME! The game that introduced me to Touhou in the first place. After 8 years I´m finally here to master the game that (for me) started it all. PoFV here I come!
