Database dumps

A while back I requested public database dumps to become available at touhouwiki.net. You replied you needed time to assess the bandwidth usage and thus available resources to do so. It's now several months beyond that point, so I guess you had time to look at the statistics and estimate whether you can miss a couple hundreds of mbs per month on publishing the dumps. It doesn't even matter if you host them onsite or offsite. Database dumps are a sign of openness (wikia has frequent dumps, wikipedia has been doing it for years) and public back-ups appear well to a community. In fact, touhouwiki.net needed the database dumps to easily copy all articles to their new site, meaning it relied on those dumps. I believe it's necessary to release the dumps. It doesn't cost any additional resources as you need to backup your site regardless. Redtails 10:16, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

The past few months have seen a large increase in traffic due to Ten Desires, causing the server to go over quota more than once. This traffic has subsided a bit, but is still more than double what it used to be. There have been further bandwidth tweaks done in the last month, so until the trends of these fixes are made clear, the answer will unfortunately be that extra bandwidth is not a luxury to be afforded at this time. Chloe 14:59, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

If you're having trouble with bandwidth costs for dumps, let me know the cost and size of a nightly text-only dump and I'll consider sorting something out if it sounds sensible -- I can provide a server you can scp it to (or scp it from you, perhaps) and try to engineer some sort of bittorrent-based solution; I imagine it'd be a fun project. I'm midway through embarking on a Touhou music metadata project, and TouhouWiki would be a pleasant addition to it if I ever finish. Bucko 11:50, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm curious why you want database dumps in the first place? Momiji 16:19, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
A nightly text-only dump would double the traffic on this site assuming even one person downloaded it nightly. Reviewing the numbers, double is an exaggeration; 15% is the actual approximate usage that this project would entail. This remains an untenable share for one person's project. Chloe 05:21, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
You should be able to drastically reduce that number if you use incremental backups. You should consider using rsync to update trees of many files where some were added or have changed substantially. For large binary files like databases you could consider running xdelta3 against a local snapshot and sending only the difference file. I would also suggest that this be done on a weekly basis, as doing it nightly seems overkill in my opinion. Run something like find /var -type f -mtime -7 to see just how many files were modified during the past week. Atanok 03:37, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm working on a system for mapping between various sources of information on Touhou music. I might even finish it one day. Bucko 08:26, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Donation/finances

I notice you have a donation button but no indication of what your costs/income from donations is. I'm happy to support online communities, but I like to see in return where the money goes. :) Bucko 11:49, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

The server is $40 USD a month, not including months where bandwidth has gone over quota. I can compile a list of donations to date if you'd like; I have not done so already as I feel it would be out of place on the site. Chloe 18:14, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
Well, it's mostly out of curiosity and efficiency -- I know certain fansub groups pull hundreds of dollars a month in and use the money to pay for stupidly overpowered servers "because they're cool." (One in particular had a pair of $150/mo servers which they used occasionally for video encoding. Instead of, you know, their own PCs...) I have a moral objection to donating to places the money will just be wasted like that. (Couldn't they at least spend the extra on the BDs they copy?!)
One of the older websites I used to help out with had a 'balance' page which listed every transaction, which acted as the donations page; the admin got a bit sick of keeping it up to date because lack of donations meant he frequently had to put thousand dollar transactions through the page. I don't really care about an itemised breakdown like that, but even a 'money in/money out' (or just 'money in' with hints at costs) each month helps to establish whether we're donating to keep the site up or donating because we appreciate the hosting/admin work. As a community website, I don't think there's much of a problem with the community being aware of its own costs. Basically I'm a big fan of open finance! Bucko 08:49, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

zh side Search Function Down

As per title, the search no longer return suggested result and still in grey words instead of normal words. - KyoriAsh 23:34, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

No changes have been made to the infrastructure since you last reported this as an issue. Chloe 23:56, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
Text typed into the search bar is black, not grey. Must be an IE thing. K 19:23, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Watchlist star-button does not work

Redirects to http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Undefined (humorously appropriate: Undefined itself does not exist). Checking the "Watch this page" box (when editing a page) still adds the page to the watchlist, but clicking the star-button (between "Read"/"Edit"/etc and the searchbar at the right-top of the screen) simply gives that odd redirect. K.B. 22:25, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Please try now. Chloe 22:44, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
Works - thanks! K.B. 00:56, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Main page extremely slow after server outage

Minor issue that seems to have surfaced after the unexpected datacenter outage the other week: The main page at http://touhouwiki.net and http://www.touhouwiki.net don't seem to load. Did the redirect rules blow up or something? Not urgent, just leaving a note. K 19:29, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Revision: Seems to just be slow as all hell, as if it's waiting/giving up on API calls to the individual wikis or something. The top portion of the page loads after a long wait, but the wiki-content div never fills up. K 19:49, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
Eureka: Issue persists on the mainpage versions on my own server, which has error reporting turned on. It's timing out on API calls to the French wiki. French wiki is down, it seems. Issue scope is now beyond touhouwiki.net itself. K 20:05, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Write API

Hello. During my absense, my bot ceased to work. The last successful run was on 13 August. It says that the wiki has write API disabled ("Editing of this wiki through the API is disabled. Make sure the $wgEnableWriteAPI=true; statement is included in the wiki's LocalSettings.php file"). Is it possible to reenable it? Thanks. -WGH 09:58, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Enabling write API causes the page watch star functionality to fail. Chloe 01:06, 29 August 2011 (UTC) Or rather, that was the former problem which is no longer manifesting. Chloe 01:08, 29 August 2011 (UTC) After caching refreshed, page watching no longer works due to write API being enabled. This seems to be an issue with the Vector extension. Chloe 01:24, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Actually, disabling write API makes star fall back to simple non-AJAX method. AJAX-based one is supposedly broken. This hack should disable AJAX star functionality even if write API is enabled. Please, try to enable it. P.S. Of course, better method would be to fix ajaxwatch.js. Maybe more recent version of MediaWiki don't have this bug. Once write API is enabled, I'll try to figure out why exactly AJAX-based thing doesn't work. -WGH 14:02, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Damn! It was really simple. Write API is certainly enabled site-wide. It makes ajaxwatch.js believe that API is available for particular user. That's not always true. Write API is enabled only for a single user group at the moment (namely, Bots). ajaxwatch.js is very dirty: it doesn't check for errors, it just doesn't expect that access to API may fail. That's where that strange redirect to Undefined comes from. I've tried to login via User:DemoGuy (it's a bot account), and AJAX watch does work. So, the solution: enable write API for all users. -WGH 11:59, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
P.S. Of course, if you don't want to enable write API for everyone, disabling ajaxwatch altogether will work, too. It would be better than my aforementioned "hack". The button will be still present, of course. -WGH 13:43, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
I have taken solution #1. Please confirm if functionality exists. Chloe 14:50, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
It works. Thanks. -WGH 14:52, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

wiki.touhou-forum.DE

Hello i am Kamiro from the german http://touhou-forum.de.

I've seen the german section of touhouwiki.net is down. Therefore I would suggest to put the link on http://wiki.touhou-forum.de

We from touhou-forum.de have set ourseves the target to improve the situation of touhou in germany and now we want to take the first steps.

We hope for your help

de.touhouwiki.net is not down, someone just replaced the former mainpage with the message that's currently on it. We've been looking for more people to cover the other wikis for a long time, but demand has been practically zero even before we moved off Wikia. We'd be really happy if someone worked on that wiki again, as we took a lot of effort to dump everything into the new site. Momiji 17:05, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Sorry I had different in remembrance the Page ^ ^
I and Grife from the german Touhou-Forum.de are willing the
administer from de.touhouwiki.net to take.

Our touhou-forum.de is willing to assist us in this matter. Kamiro 03:41, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

A merger between Touhou Forum wiki to de Touhouwiki perhaps? - KyoriAsh 08:50, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Mirror Site?

While browsing around on this site, I found out that a couple of pages in I was on a site that said "http://pool.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page" Is that still you guys? Because a lot of the pages required logins and weren't even filled with information... - SisterOfScarletDevil 15:15, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

That pool is actually our touhouwiki.net's common wiki page, the original intention is to store images and works with GlobalUsage plugin, however, the plugin have some difficulty of displaying the interwiki link of using the images. - KyoriAsh 20:27, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Oh okay sorry about that. I wasn't sure if that was still part of this wiki or not. - SisterOfScarletDevil 10:22, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

MUCK section issues

Hey. I was just checking the MUCK section of the wiki (http://muck.touhouwiki.net/wiki/TouhouMUCK_Wiki), and saw that apparently it's down. According to the players on the MUCK, it was fine about forty minutes ago. Is it some kind of server hiccup, or is it a more serious issue? Thanks in advance. Squidtentacle 17:49, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Actualy all the wikis on server exept this one are down and redirect to en.touhouwiki.net. --Coyc 18:50, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
Ah, alright. Thanks, then. Squidtentacle 18:54, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Pagelinks table inconsistency

File:PCBChen.png. As you can see, "file links" section shows list of pages which clearly don't link to that file. It probably means that either pagelinks or imagelinks table is in invalid state. Could you try to rebuild it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by WGH (talkcontribs) 17:40, 16 December 2011

This script has been run at least half a dozen times over the course of the past year, with each attempt typically taking at least an hour and half of time. The first few attempts have corrected the vast majority of incorrect page referrers; it would be difficult to justify the time expenditure over a single image at this point. Chloe 02:28, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
A followup: I've run the script, so please verify if this is functioning correctly now (which it seems to be). Chloe 23:50, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Search

I know you're busy, but is it possible to improve on the search to give more relevant results?

With our search bar, it is Typo Intolerant.

For example, if you type in Genius of Sapporios, you'll see I did not spell Sappheiros correctly and can't navigate to that page with our current search bar.

So it would be cool if you could fix that.

Thx.

♥★♦

I have to second this suggestion. Several times I have use the built-in search bar to try to look up things, but the results aren't that relevant (listing a bunch of old fanfiction instead). Other times, not knowing how to properly spell (as Nazeo pointed out) wrecks any chance of locating the item. I know of at least one instance where somebody was unable to locate a doujinshi or album due to a typo.
This would not only benefit wiki editors such as myself, but also visitors looking up stuff in this wiki, making this site more attractive and user-friendly. Nowadays I sometimes find myself using Google Site Search rather than the wiki search when I can't find what I want. - Kiefmaster99 23:39, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
So that it would be more like when you look for "Phantasmagoria~" that the more relevant "Phantasmagoria of Flower View" will show up, then "Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream" (and no redirects showing up), and then the whole bunch of subpages? ☢ Quwanti 23:42, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I wonder if it is possible to make the Google results more recent and complete. Usually, if the search is no good, I turn to Google and type in "site:en.touhouwiki.net" but the problem with that is that not all pages seem to be indexed.--Tosiaki 23:57, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I've installed Lucene search. It does not seem to have changed anything, although it's verified as installed. Let me know if you have suggestions. Chloe 19:01, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Confirmed, it did not do anything but wipe out all User Created pages even when the search is in "Everything"
(Try searching your name to see what I mean)
Perhaps a Google powered searchbar could give deliver some results?

Technical issues

Hi, I'm originally from Wikipedia although I occasionally edit Touhouwiki every now and then. Just to let you know that MediaWiki:Common.css on pool.touhouwiki.net is empty, meaning that some file license templates will not work properly (see wikipedia:Template:Imbox#Technical details for the relevant documentation). It should be filled with the contents found in wikipedia:MediaWiki:Common.css. If an admin would like to fix this up, that would be great. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs 10:34, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
