Notes

  1. "錯舌" (sakusetsu, with kanji for 'mistake' and 'tongue') does not appear to be an actual word, but may be a pun on "錯節" (sakusetsu, "tangle").
  2. A reference to the kabuki play The Medicine Peddler (Uiro Uri), in which the titular medicine peddler delivers a tongue-twisting series of lines for three minutes straight. "三武具馬具、六武具馬具" means "three armors and saddles, six armors and saddles"; "三野良如来、六野良如来" means "three Buddhas in the fields, six Buddhas in the fields".
  3. A reference to Makino Shinichi's short story "The Globe" (地球儀), which became somewhat infamous after its inclusion in the 2013 Center Test. Several English lines spoken in the story are written entirely in katakana; this was apparently common when the story was written in 1923, but to test-takers nowadays it looked like complete gibberish.
  4. A reference to Umineko no Naku Koro ni, a murder mystery series taking place on the island of Rokkenjima. Locked-room mysteries are very common in the series. Sasha's own name (a Western name spelled with kanji, then "___omiya") happens to be a reference to the Umineko characters' own names as well.
  5. The name of this spell, "Hazuki no bon-tobu-tonbo no kizu ha", is a palindrome when rendered in the Japanese syllabary. Not actually a complete sentence; literally means "the scars of the August dragonflies flying on Obon are". While not a proper palindrome in English, a similar repetition of sounds is present in this translation (albeit with some liberties taken).
