Summary: Someone leaves a "kappa's arm" at the Hakurei Shrine. Reimu decides to turn it into a goshintai and send Marisa to the human village for supplies. At the entrance to the human village, Marisa bumps into a girl, who claims she was remembering everything since her birth as a means to extend her lifespan. Marisa then returns to the shrine, and Reimu sets up the goshintai. Almost immediately, the strange girl Marisa met turns up at the shrine to see the kappa's arm, even though Reimu had not yet advertised the kappa's arm. The girl introduces herself as Kasen Ibaraki, a hermit who apparently visited the shrine before and already knows Reimu, and she claims she heard about the kappa's arm from some birds. She gets Reimu to show her the kappa's arm, but is disappointed when she sees that the "kappa's arm" is a mechanical extending arm. Afterwards, Marisa invites Kasen to visit the shrine more often.

Chapter Two

Summary: Above the Underground Geyser Center, Kasen, concerned that evil spirits are appearing above ground, puts up a sign declaring "only people who want to die should come near" (due to the presence of poisonous gases and evil spirits). At the Hakurei Shrine, Sanae tries to explain to Reimu and Marisa that nuclear reactor in Former Hell is inefficient. Kasen drops by to listen in, and Sanae reveals that Kasen also lives on Youkai Mountain. Sanae then gives them an explanation of cold fusion and asks Reimu to call upon the god of metals to provide some palladium alloy for an experiment. A few days later, Sanae and Kanako perform the experiment successfully.

Chapter Three

Summary: Kasen goes to the Hakurei Shrine and finds some vengeful spirits gathering around a small pile of gold. Kasen orders Reimu to tell her where she got the gold, and Reimu leads her to the hot springs near the underground geyser center, where Marisa and the kappa are digging for gold. Kasen then orders Reimu to put back the gold since the gold was formed from humans' desires and infused with the essence of vengeful spirits. Kasen also explains that metals such as mercury and arsenic are similarly formed, and Marisa notes that they are often used in magicians' experiments. Komachi appears at Kasen's dojo to remind her that the shinigami are monitoring her.

Chapter Four

Summary: A landslide occurred near the kappa's hideout, and Reimu, Marisa, and Kasen go investigate. The landslide had blocked the river, creating a natural dam and a lake near the base of the mountain. The three meet Kanako at the lake, where they discuss the advantages of dams. Kanako ends up removing the dam and the silt, and proceeds to direct a kappa to build another dam. Sanae mentions that the dam was planned long before the landslide. Suspicious, Kasen confronts Suwako about the real purpose of the dam: to create a lake as a "base" that's more convenient for worshipers. Suwako remarks that the landslide was the result of the kappas' attempt to build the dam in one night and that construction of the current dam is will be canceled since the kappa work poorly in groups.

Chapter Five

Summary: Frustrated that her shrine isn't attracting visitors, Reimu decides to ask Kasen to teach her a few techniques that can help her attract worshipers. Put off by her ambitious attitude, Kasen summons a dragon to take Reimu to her dojo for training for a few days. After the training is completed, Komachi visits Kasen and tells her that she is impressed with Kasen for performing her hermit duties. However, Komachi also explains that Reimu is too simple-minded to have any ill intent, and that she'll return to normal very shortly.

Summary: Kasen and Sanae visit the Hakurei Shrine to find a very lethargic Reimu and Marisa. They tell Kasen and Sanae about a strange creature they had found after the thunderstorm on the night before, hoping that the creature would help solve Gensokyo's energy crisis. After poking through the shrine, Kasen finds the creature, a raijuu she was taking care of. She realizes the raijuu was responsible for the thunderstorm. She also notes that the raijuu is poisonous; the poison, found in the lightning it creates, causes people who see its lightning to become exhausted and lose their ability to think. Kasen has Sanae prepare some corn, which counteracts the raijuu's poison, for Reimu and Marisa.

Summary: Marisa hears that a god of fortune has visited a soba shop in the Human Village. When she tells Reimu about the rumor, Reimu decides to have the god visit her shrine. The next day, Reimu leaves a broom on the ground, hoping the god of fortune will appear and start sweeping. After Reimu's scheme fails, Marisa then tells her that the god is a shy human who is always smiling and resembles a fukusuke doll. The god wanders the village, appearing to enter shops at random, though every shop he has visited has prospered. Sanae recognizes the god as Shirou Sendai. Kasen then reveals why the places he visited prosper: because those shops are already committed to prospering.

Summary: After last night's party at the Hakurei Shrine, Reimu wakes up and discovers a youkai fox, who tries to disguise herself as Marisa but is quickly outed. Reimu was about to exterminate her when the fox tells Reimu where to find some spare change and cleans up last night's party. When Reimu tries asking for more money, the fox tells her how she can get that. Over the next several days, the shrine is teeming with visitors. Kasen discovers a tube fox attached to one of the visitors and confiscates it. She tells Reimu and Marisa that though the tube fox can gather wealth and fortune it will also completely drain the vitality of the spellcaster. Reimu confesses about the youkai fox to Marisa and Kasen, and swears to exterminate all youkai on the spot.

Summary: Reimu has found the youkai fox who swindled her in the previous chapter and plans to exterminate her. Kasen wonders if Reimu is being too harsh, pointing out that not all youkai have bad intentions. Reimu then proceeds to lecture Kasen on the nature of youkai. At that point, Mamizou appears at the shrine because she believes Reimu is behind the attacks of several residents of the Myouren Temple. However, since the attacker managed to remain unseen at each attack, they conclude that the culprit is a youkai. A few days later, Kasen was asking Reimu to not be so harsh on some youkai when a mysterious mist appears striking down Marisa and Reimu. The mist collects to reveal Suika, who "attacked" the residents of the temple as part of a greeting. Kasen disappears before Suika can see her, having recognised the mist on touch and not wanting to be "revealed"...

Summary: With her errand-eagle Kume growing old and forgetful, Kasen decides to start training his replacement Kanda. As finding the way back to a hermit's home is a skill that takes a long time to learn, Kasen decorates a tree with orbs of light to act as a landmark. However, on learning from Marisa that people are seeking out this tree in the belief it grows jewels, she quickly replaces the lights with a less-conspicuous Brocken Spectre. Marisa is still curious about the tree's odd shadow and sets off to investigate; spotting Kanda with supplies, she manages to follow him back to Kasen's dojo. Another few days later, Marisa brags to Reimu about her plans to visit Kasen again and "borrow" some valuables.

Summary: Reimu is pushing Kasen to host the annual flower-viewing party when an injured Marisa arrives; she was trying to find Kasen's house again to steal her valuables but was warded off and attack by her pet tiger due to Marisa's intention of taking it's rare pelt. Marisa leaves, but returns soon afterwards with her cut completely gone - apparently a fisherman in the Human Village named Unshou has been healing people with a mysterious ointment. Marisa suggests that Kasen seek him out to have her "injured" arm healed (Kasen hiding that her arm is fake). Kasen first searches Unshou's house, then approaches him in person, asking where he found Kappa's Nostrum and where he's keeping "the arm". Unshou claims he received the medicine from a kappa in exchange for a pair of "kappa's arms" he found in the river, one in a box (apparently the arm from chapter 1) and the other a still-living humanoid arm which was carrying it. Kasen ends up hiring Unshou to provide fish for the party.

Summary: Komachi arrives at Kasen's dojo, who notes that she's altered the route since Marisa found it. When Kasen refers to ferryman shinigami as lower-ranking than those who collect mortals at their time of death, Komachi reveals that the second type are actually an elaborate hoax - only those who would illegally extend their life need "collecting", and Hell sends "something much scarier than a shinigami" to do it. At the shrine Reimu and Marisa witness a sudden downpour, followed by a giant geyser erupting from Genbu Ravine. They arrive to find that the water is so pressurised that anything touching it will be disintegrated, and that the kappa have been rendered homeless. The water was actually gathered by the kishin chief Suiki to trap and kill Seiga Kaku, because she has lived too long. The trap's structure makes Seiga's ability useless on it, but she escapes by tunneling through the ground. On meeting Seiga, Kasen wonders if what she's done is really so wicked, and, if simply living too long is a wicked act, what that means for the youkai. It's at least a few days before Suiki realises Seiga is gone.

Summary: In the forest, Kasen sees animals fleeing from what appears to be the sound of a gunshot. At the shrine, she blames it on some of the displaced kappa from the last chapter, who have become yamawaro and take part in wargames. However, she learns from her eagle that not only are the yamawaro not using guns, the animals are even joining in the fun. Claiming that a human villager was shot, Reimu heads for the mountains to exterminate the yamawaro, but is rudely turned away. Soon afterwards, reports come in that one of the yamawaro has been shot. Investigating, Kasen discovers that the villager's wound is actually a bite, deciding that he must have mistaken the attack for a gunshot from its sound and because he couldn't see its source. Kasen tracks the culprit to a group of mami (a tanuki-like animal) that have started to transform into noteppou in response to the wargames. She instructs them to bring apology gifts to those they attacked, and tells them a way to reverse their youkai transformation. Reimu is annoyed by the yamawaro's apparent stroke of generosity, and heads back up to give them a piece of her mind.

Summary: In the Human Village, Kasen sees the residents of a house begging a young girl in a kimono not to leave, who then vanishes into thin air. Reimu explains that the girl was a zashiki-warashi, a benevolent household spirit, and that they have been leaving in great numbers lately. According to Yukari there has been demand for them in the Outside World as part of a small-town revitalisation project. Yukari arrives with a hobgoblin, saying that they're the zashiki-warashi's Western equivalents and she's invited them to Gensokyo to fill in for them. The hobgoblins, however, prove unpopular with the villagers due to their ugly appearance. When Kasen asks Yukari why she would go so far to replace the zashiki-warashi, Yukari explains that the other youkai rely on them to spy on the village and report on any subversive elements; a request from the outside world, though, was too big of an opportunity to go to waste. Kasen starts to realise their true goal, but Yukari cuts her off, saying the youkai in Gensokyo have to get their food from somewhere. Kasen is confused about why Yukari would tell her all this, to which she responds "Oh? Aren't you on our side?". Kasen and Reimu exterminate the hobgoblins under the excuse that they're youkai spies. The zashiki-warashi return, having misunderstood the demand, while the hobgoblins find jobs at the Scarlet Devil Mansion.

Few days laer, Kasen notice her temples been well clean up and sees that Reimu's Goshintai is a plum tree in order to create new faith and visitors. A few weeks later, the plan works but none came to donate. Just then Yukari came to visit and tells her that it's a youkai tree as it's already dead by looking at the branches that acts like roots. After the plum viewing season's over, Reimu intend to remove the Shimenawa but was stopped by Kasen and remembering Yukari's words. Sadly Reimu doesn't realize that even without removing it, the branches grow so long that it spreads below like roots, causing spirits to roam around her shrine.
