| sum = Someone leaves a "kappa's arm" at the Hakurei Shrine. Reimu decides to turn it into a goshintai and send Marisa to the human village for supplies. At the entrance to the human village, Marisa bumps into a girl, who claims she was remembering everything since her birth as a means to extend her lifespan. Marisa then returns to the shrine, and Reimu sets up the goshintai. Almost immediately, the strange girl Marisa met turns up at the shrine to see the kappa's arm, even though Reimu had not yet advertised the kappa's arm. The girl introduces herself as Kasen Ibaraki, a hermit who apparently visited the shrine before and already knows Reimu, and she claims she heard about the kappa's arm from some birds. She gets Reimu to show her the kappa's arm, but is disappointed when she sees that the "kappa's arm" is a mechanical extending arm. Afterwards, Marisa invites Kasen to visit the shrine more often.

Kasen drops by to listen in, and Sanae reveals that Kasen also lives on Youkai Mountain. | sum = Kasen goes to the Hakurei Shrine and finds some vengeful spirits gathering around a small pile of gold. Kasen orders Reimu to tell her where she got the gold, and Reimu leads her to the hot springs near the underground geyser center, where Marisa and the kappa are digging for gold. Kasen then orders Reimu to put back the gold since the gold was formed from humans' desires and infused with the essence of vengeful spirits. Kasen also explains that metals such as mercury and arsenic are similarly formed, and Marisa notes that they are often used in magicians' experiments. Komachi appears at Kasen's dojo to remind her that the shinigami are monitoring her.

| sum = A landslide occurred near the kappa's hideout, and Reimu, Marisa, and Kasen go investigate. The landslide had blocked the river, creating a natural dam and a lake near the base of the mountain. The three meet Kanako at the lake, where they discuss the advantages of dams. Kanako ends up removing the dam and the silt, and proceeds to direct a kappa to build another dam. Sanae mentions that the dam was planned long before the landslide. Suspicious, Kasen confronts Suwako about the real purpose of the dam: to create a lake as a "base" that's more convenient for worshipers. Suwako remarks that the landslide was the result of the kappas' attempt to build the dam in one night and that construction of the current dam is will be canceled since the kappa work poorly in groups.

After the training is completed, Komachi visits Kasen and tells her that she is impressed with Kasen for performing her hermit duties. They tell Kasen and Sanae about a strange creature they had found after the thunderstorm on the night before, hoping that the creature would help solve Gensokyo's energy crisis. After poking through the shrine, Kasen finds the creature, a raijuu she was taking care of. She realizes the raijuu was responsible for the thunderstorm. She also notes that the raijuu is poisonous; the poison, found in the lightning it creates, causes people who see its lightning to become exhausted and lose their ability to think. Kasen has Sanae prepare some corn, which counteracts the raijuu's poison, for Reimu and Marisa.

| sum = Marisa hears that a god of fortune has visited a soba shop in the Human Village. When she tells Reimu about the rumor, Reimu decides to have the god visit her shrine. The next day, Reimu leaves a broom on the ground, hoping the god of fortune will appear and start sweeping. After Reimu's scheme fails, Marisa then tells her that the god is a shy human who is always smiling and resembles a fukusuke doll. The god wanders the village, appearing to enter shops at random, though every shop he has visited has prospered. Sanae recognizes the god as Shirou Sendai. Kasen then reveals why the places he visited prosper: because those shops are already committed to prospering.

Reimu was about to exterminate her when the fox tells Reimu where to find some spare change and cleans up last night's party. When Reimu tries asking for more money, the fox tells her how she can get that. Over the next several days, the shrine is teeming with visitors. Kasen discovers a tube fox attached to one of the visitors and confiscates it. She tells Reimu and Marisa that though the tube fox can gather wealth and fortune it will also completely drain the vitality of the spellcaster. Kasen wonders if Reimu is being too harsh, pointing out that not all youkai have bad intentions. Reimu then proceeds to lecture Kasen on the nature of youkai. At that point, Mamizou appears at the shrine because she believes Reimu is behind the attacks of several residents of the Myouren Temple. However, since the attacker managed to remain unseen at each attack, they conclude that the culprit is a youkai. A few days later, Kasen was asking Reimu to not be so harsh on some youkai when a mysterious mist appears striking down Marisa and Reimu. The mist collects to reveal Suika, who "attacked" the residents of the temple as part of a greeting. Kasen disappears before Suika can see her, having recognised the mist on touch and not wanting to be "revealed"...

Marisa leaves, but returns soon afterwards with her cut completely gone - apparently a fisherman in the Human Village named Unshou has been healing people with a mysterious ointment. Marisa suggests that Kasen seek him out to have her "injured" arm healed (Kasen hiding that her arm is fake). Kasen first searches Unshou's house, then approaches him in person, asking where he found Kappa's Nostrum and where he's keeping "the arm". Unshou claims he received the medicine from a kappa in exchange for a pair of "kappa's arms" he found in the river, one in a box (apparently the arm from chapter 1) and the other a still-living humanoid arm which was carrying it. When Kasen refers to ferryman shinigami as lower-ranking than those who collect mortals at their time of death, Komachi reveals that the second type are actually an elaborate hoax - only those who would illegally extend their life need "collecting", and Hell sends "something much scarier than a shinigami" to do it. At the shrine Reimu and Marisa witness a sudden downpour, followed by a giant geyser erupting from Genbu Ravine. They arrive to find that the water is so pressurized that anything touching it will be disintegrated, and that the kappa have been rendered homeless. The water was actually gathered by the kishin chief Suiki to trap and kill Seiga Kaku, because she has lived too long. The trap's structure makes Seiga's ability useless on it, but she escapes by tunneling through the ground. On meeting Seiga, Kasen wonders if what she's done is really so wicked, and, if simply living too long is a wicked act, what that means for the youkai. At the shrine, she blames it on some of the displaced kappa from the last chapter, who have become yamawaro and take part in wargames. However, she learns from her eagle that not only are the yamawaro not using guns, the animals are even joining in the fun. Claiming that a human villager was shot, Reimu heads for the mountains to exterminate the yamawaro, but is rudely turned away. Soon afterwards, reports come in that one of the yamawaro has been shot. Investigating, Kasen discovers that the villager's wound is actually a bite, deciding that he must have mistaken the attack for a gunshot from its sound and because he couldn't see its source. Kasen tracks the culprit to a group of mami (a tanuki-like animal) that have started to transform into noteppou in response to the wargames. She instructs them to bring apology gifts to those they attacked, and tells them a way to reverse their youkai transformation. Reimu is annoyed by the yamawaro's apparent stroke of generosity, and heads back up to give them a piece of her mind.

Reimu explains that the girl was a zashiki-warashi, a benevolent household spirit, and that they have been leaving in great numbers lately. Yukari arrives with a hobgoblin, saying that they're the zashiki-warashi's Western equivalents and she's invited them to Gensokyo to fill in for them. The hobgoblins, however, prove unpopular with the villagers due to their ugly appearance. When Kasen asks Yukari why she would go so far to replace the zashiki-warashi, Yukari explains that the other youkai rely on them to spy on the village and report on any subversive elements; a request from the outside world, though, was too big of an opportunity to go to waste. Kasen starts to realise their true goal, but Yukari cuts her off, saying the youkai in Gensokyo have to get their food from somewhere. Kasen is confused about why Yukari would tell her all this, to which she responds "Oh? Aren't you on our side?". Kasen and Reimu exterminate the hobgoblins under the excuse that they're youkai spies. The zashiki-warashi return, having misunderstood the demand, while the hobgoblins find jobs at the Scarlet Devil Mansion.}}

| sum = Winter has come, and Marisa comes to visit Reimu at the Hakurei Shrine, which isn't looking good from the outside. Reimu explains that she doesn't work during the early part of the year and that she never gets visitors anyway, but it's clear that she's just been slacking off for a long time, and Marisa is unable to shake her out of her lethargy. Meanwhile, the Myouren Temple is getting plenty of visitors. Later on, Kasen goes to the Hakurei Shrine as well; apparently there was a big exhibition at the temple. She says that the relics they were showing off were nothing special, but Marisa says it certainly brings in the worshipers. Marisa reminds Reimu of the Goshintai she tried to set up in Chapter 1, and Reimu gets the idea to use the Goshintai to put on a big show. A few days later, Kasen returns to find the shrine crystal-clean, but the donation box has a sign on it directing people away to see the Goshintai. Kasen wanders in that direction and finds Reimu with a big plum tree. Using questionable logic, she deduces that since plum trees make people think of Lord Tenjin, then that must obviously be the god that's enshrined here. However, as Tenjin is a spirit of academic success, and it isn't really needed in the Human Village, faith in him is small. Reimu's idea is to have the plum tree there to draw in visitors, and thus collect faith at the same time. Later in the year, the plan actually bears fruit, and even Yukari Yakumo comes to visit. She points out that the tree is known for growing branches that grow into the ground to become roots, and then explains that in the real world, the Goshintai tree was chopped down and became a youkai tree that casted a curse as strong as the amount of faith it had gathered. A while afterwards, Kasen visits Reimu to find her removing the decorative ropes(shimenawa) from the plum tree to put them on a cherry blossom. Kasen points out that it's a bad idea becuase of the plum tree's curse, and Reimu hastily replaces it, deciding to get some new shimenawa instead. Unfortunately the tree eventually grew too large for the shimenawa, and the divine spirits started leaking out of it, causing visitors to stop coming.}}

| sum = As the day of the annual flower viewing approaches, Reimu brings Marisa and Kasen to the shrine to persuade them to help her out, since putting parties together is a lot of work. She asks Kasen to bring food and sake again, since they were a big hit. She offers to bring the sake if Marisa gets the food. The next day, as various youkai are gathered for the flower viewing, some people are wary of the sake Kasen will be bringing. When she arrives, she shows everyone the sake worm in the vase of sake she brought, which turns water into sake overnight. It's a huge hit. She later explains to Marisa that she used a trick - she use a sake dish owned by a certain acquaintance that raises the quality of sake poured into it. In addition, she has a "drinking box" that will grant sake poured into it the effect of curing illnesses and injuries. If the drinker is already healthy, it grants them strength, but at a cost... Everyone gets wind of that and tries to drink from it. The next day, Sanae Kochiya comes to visit. She finds an extremely grumpy Reimu and a Marisa who is punching everyone in the face. She leaves and finds Kasen who warns her to stay away from them for now. Kasen explains that the personalities of those who drink it turn into that of onis. She also finally mentions that if it actually ends up healing your body, your actual body would become an oni. Sanae points out Kasen's bandage-covered arm, but she explains that she needs to drink from that box or else the arm would completely rot away - it will never heal. Just then, Suika Ibuki appears above them after having gotten a tip from Yuugi. She says to herself that Kasen didn't have to keep hiding, and that she hasn't seen her in a long time, but leaves, not wanting to blow her cover.

At the Hakurei Shrine, Kasen drops in on Reimu, who has decided to make some plum wine using plums from her cursed goshintai tree (WaHH Chapter 15). While Reimu looks for a heavy stone to place atop the fermentation jar, Marisa comes by with a stone from her house, originally stolen from the Shrine, that she wants Reimu to investigate since it keeps dripping water. Kasen calls it a Weather Stone, a rare object that appears when seasons change, and that the moisture is the breath from a creature inside the stone. Specifically, a dragon resides inside, with the stone growing to accommodate its size. Reimu builds a shrine for it and attempts to attract visitors, but the stone doesn't grow at all. Kasen explains that it might be a Fish Stone, instead, and that might be a good thing it's not a Dragon Stone, since its birth could be accompanied by a devastating thunderstorm. By chipping away at the Stone to reveal the fish inside, it's also said by Kasen to be quite beautiful. Reimu and Marisa try to do so, only to break it, so they place the two goldfish inside into a fishbowl. Deducing that Kasen must have a Fish Stone and Dragon Stone, Marisa asks to see it. After revealing an unpolished Fish Stone, Reimu guesses that Kasen was testing the to see that it could be done. She also reveals that her Dragon Stone had already hatched, becoming her pet dragon.}}

Marisa notes to Kasen that her religious rivals, the Buddhist Myouren Temple and Taoist Toyosatomimi no Miko and her followers are, too. Ordinary methods for gaining followers won't work, so duels for popularity have become the norm. After remarking that Kasen is a Taoist, as she's a Hermit, she talks with Reimu. She says that an epidemic of pessimism is to blame and that it's the job of a preacher to capitalize and bring salvation in times like these. Reimu also declares her a rival. Becoming concerned with her proper role as a hermit, Komachi suggest she talks to her colleagues, the Taoists. She visits the Divine Spirit Mausoleum in Senkai and meets with Miko. Miko says she became a Hermit to overcome her humanity and that as Kasen notes, is taking followers for the same reason as Reimu. As she leaves, she tells Miko that she became a hermit to become closer to people. Next, as Reimu and Byakuren fight, Kasen places a best on Byakuren while encouraging Reimu, confident she would lose because she got too cocky, as per usual. Seeing the true nature of the duels, Kasen decides she has no need to try and act as a religious authority.

As Reimu's purification rod hops around as if it were alive, Sanae is disappointed she didn't get to participate and wonders why her own wasn't affected. Marisa says it's because she hasn't used it often enough. Though Reimu laments that she didn't notice the incident sooner, Sanae remarks she was just lazy. After, Reimu tries forcing her to drink, but Sanae says that doing such a thing is rude and old fashioned in the Outside World. The two argue and using an old poem by Ootomo no Tabito, Reimu says Sanae is simply too uncultured to understand drinking. Reimu says the next day she is frustrated that her efforts during Double Dealing Character went unrecognized. As Sanae complains to Kanako about the previous night and her inactivity during Hopeless Masquerade and Double Dealing Character, Kanako says it wouldn't have gotten any more worshipers. Instead, she says that the cableway to Moriya Shrine was nearly complete. Using a method for revenge suggested by Suwako, Sanae presents Reimu with modern sake, and a long, but bogus story of its history, rife with names of those who've made a fool of themselves while drunk. Visitors crowd the ravine to see it, so the kappa set up an attraction where they have it perform. However, the seal is moody. Kasen reads it and says it needs saltwater. After visiting Reimu, she tells her about the movement to make the seal an honorary member of the Human Village, and recounts the story the seal told her. It visited a town in the Outside World and after being named an honorary citizen, it swam away. It returned sometime, but found the humans had forgotten it. Later, talking about the event with Kasen and Marisa, it's explained that dousojin are also gods of childbirth, thus they influence the fortune of newborns. Since she can hear and talk to gods, Reimu gets the idea of making a businness out of it, then goes to the village and tells the villager the fortune decided by the dousojin for the child, adding a raccomandation to pay visit to the shrine once a week. Many more people start visiting the shrine, wanting Reimu to tell them what the gods say, mistaking it as fortune-telling. Excited by the great numbers of visitors, the shrine maiden starts an actual divination businness, confident the the villagers will believe whatever she says (and purposedly doing vague reading). Despite the businness going very well, Kasen notices that the shrine is being neglected, and takes Reimu's place "for the good of the youkai". Very soon, lots of youkai start coming to the shrine as they please, making it a place in which humans feel no longer safe. As humans stop visiting Reimu, they also stop trusting her and believing her fortune-telling, forcing the shrine maiden to abandon the businness. After seeing the shrine full of youkai, Reimu remembers that her true job is youkai extermination, and makes a show of chasing away all the youkai so that humans will trust her again. At the end, she starts doing fortune-telling at the shrine, very accurate and also popular among youkai.
