Youkai Mountain

Youkai Mountain with waterfalls at its base, as seen in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.

Youkai Mountain (Youkai no Yama, 妖怪の山) is reputedly the greatest mountain in Gensokyo.

Geography and People

At the base of it live the Kappa, such as Nitori Kawashiro, and at the top are the Tengu. It's actually such a dangerous place full of youkai, some of which don't like humans, that humans are normally unable to come here.

This mountain is protected by the white wolf tengu division, along with Momiji Inubashiri, who patrols it around the waterfalls which possibly comes from the lake that had been brought along with the Moriya Shrine. Also among the tengu living here is Aya Shameimaru, as well as other newspaper-writing tengu. The tengu chief is Lord Tenma.

The mountain was formerly ruled by the oni, with the tengu and kappa as their suboridnates. Due to the creation of the Hakurei border and the rapid decline of honest oni exterminators, the onis grew tiresome of how uneventful Gensokyo has become. They all simply left to move on to another undecided location in search of excitement. It was later revealed in Subterranean Animism that they had all taken residence in the subterrranean Former Capital. With their superiors nowhere to be found, the tengu and the kappa were quick to take charge over the mountains.

Revealed by chapter four of Cage in Lunatic Runagate to be the Yatsugatake mountain range from the distant past, giving the only indication as to the outside world location of Gensokyo.

Giant Toad's Pond

The Giant Toad's Pond (大蝦蟇の池, ro. Oo-gama no ike) is a small pond and can be found half-way up the mountain. It is home to the Giant Toad that's large enough to swallow a human child. This was one of the locations in Phantasmagoria of Flower View. A small shrine rests at the pond's vicinity. Visitors are sure to leave offerings everytime they pass by even though noone really knows for whom or when it was built. There is a probability that the shrine is dedicated to the Nai-no-Kami, protector of the keystone.

The Abandoned Settlement

It was rumored that a small, secluded village ruled by a feline government rests somewhere in the depth of the mountain. In truth, as Aya Shameimaru soon discovered, the village is nothing more than an abandoned human settlement where wild cats roam freely. Chen, who also lives within the mountain (quite possibly within this village) ,is often seen here (attempting at) herding the wild cats. She hopes to teach them some obedience and train one of them into her own personal Shikigami. Bribery with catnip has proven unsuccessful thusfar.

The Great Youkai Forest

The Great Youkai Forest (妖怪の樹海, ro. Youkai no jukai) is somewhere at the bottom of the mountain. This is where Hina Kagiyama and numerous youkai can be seen. Nothing is really known about this place.

The Untrodden Valley

The Untrodden Valley (未踏の渓谷, ro. Mitou no keikoku) is somewhere around the mountain and it is where the Kappa can be found. It is the home of much kappa activity, such as the kappa's bazaar in Touhou Hisoutensoku and Kanako's attempt in building a dam in Wild and Horned Hermit.

Moriya Shrine

Lately, there's a new arrival from the outside world, the Moriya Shrine, which has appeared on the mountain along with the Divine Lake. Sanae Kochiya, Kanako Yasaka, and Suwako Moriya all live here.

Heaven

Heaven can be found somewhere above the Youkai Mountain, most battles from Scarlet Weather Rhapsody took place here.

Underground Geyser Center

The Underground Geyser Center was built after the events in Subterranean Animism, Utsuho is seen here working with Kanako and Suwako for the Nuclear Project.
