Description

深夜放送 (Shin'ya Housou lit. "Late-Night Broadcast") is one of guitarist and arranger イコ's personal circles, and are a circle known for their instrumental Touhou Rock arrangements that range in tone from experimental, to aggressive, to mellow, to atmospheric. The way イコ describes his own work is "somewhere in the area of post-punk, noise-rock or alternative-rock... probably",[1] but much of his circle's arrangement style is expressed through a very track specific audio engineering style which he favors, and as a result even otherwise fairy straightforward arrangements by the circle can be made more intricate. One of the most notable examples of this is the circle's strategic use of noise, which ranges in application from giving arrangements a dirtier Punk or Noise Rock sound, to creating cacophonous soundscapes of ear rending guitar distortion with melodies that screech and squeal. In contrast to this, they will occasionally make use of ambient elements to create laid-back and atmospheric arrangements, experimental elements such as abruptly changing an arrangement's tone or cycling through several different styles during the same track are also used. Arrangements by the circle will often only explore an idea once, meaning their arrangements rarely overstay their welcome but are often quite short as a result, this sense of brevity is further compounded by the circle's median album length clocking in at 14 minutes, and their albums often featuring between 5 and 7 tracks. Due to this relatively short runtime, and their pithy arrangement style, albums by 深夜放送 are less akin to a traditional collection of songs and more like a short listening experience which is greater than the sum of it's parts. In addition to the their own discography, the circle has also contributed a number of guest arrangement to albums released by other circles (see guest arrangement section), this is of note since these guest arrangement have almost without exception only been featured on their parent albums.

Founded in 2011, 深夜放送 began by releasing two demos (1st demo, 2nd demo) who's tracks would appear on their first album (外の世界から) which was released in mid 2012. Things proceeded smoothly for a time, but late 2013 would mark the beginning of a turbulent period as イコ was so dissatisfied with the circle's 4th album 人を殺す文化 that he stopped distributing it altogether after it's initial release at Touhou Kouroumu 9.[2] Late the following year things would come to a head when イコ formally disbanded 深夜放送, at the time he felt the circle was deteriorating and wished to stop it from falling further, but he did express a desire to continue creating other music at his own pace.[3] As a result, the circle laid seemingly inactive for almost an entire year with no live shows announced or guest arrangements contributed, but despite this in late 2015 イコ announced the circle's return, as well as their newest release set for Touhou Kouroumu 11, 人を殺す文化. It was a sense of linger regrets sounding the circle that motivated イコ to revive it, and more specifically he felt ashamed at having pretended that an album he released had never existed. And so he set out to redeem both the album and the circle by completely re-doing every track from the ground up, he even went as far as to offer the new album free-of-charge in exchanged for copies of the original 2013 version.[4] Since their return, 深夜放送 has gone on to continue releasing music though both their own releases as well as collaboration albums with other circles and guest arrangements, with the year directly following their return being one of their most productive to date.

Since 深夜放送's founding イコ has expressed a desire to both compose original music and arrange themes from other games, in addition to Touhou Project he is notably also a fan of Team Ico's games and Splatoon.[1] He is currently active in a Splatoon let's play group and arrangement circle called 感度5 (niconico mylist) headed by ななせ, and has also released his own Slaptoon arrangement album called Correctionfluid under a different circle name. As a 2017 Christmas gift 深夜放送 gave away their first 4 albums free-of-charge through digital download, the twitter announcement which includes download links can be found here, additionally several of the circle's arrangements can be listened to on their niconico My List.
