"Oh well, it doesn't matter if you really are youkai or not. I have the grimoire you're looking for. I am the magician you're looking for. Whether you are youkai or not. YOU ARE MY ENEMIES!"
"Hyaaa!"
Alice Margatroid and the Three Fairies of Light (Strange and Bright Nature Deity Chapter 6)

Alice Margatroid (アリス・マーガトロイド Arisu Māgatoroido) is a doll-controlling magician who lives in her home in the Forest of Magic near the home of Marisa Kirisame. She first appeared as the Stage 3 and Extra boss in Mystic Square and then later reappeared in Windows as Perfect Cherry Blossom's Stage 3 boss and midboss.

General Information

Personality

Alice is someone that is generally indifferent to others. [2] As an "indoor type" person, she does not know much about the outside of the Forest of Magic, and hardly ventures outside of it, spending most of her time alone. [3][4] While she puts on a confident attitude, she also has a timid side.[2] Alice loves magic and has an obsession with collecting things, especially magic items and books, which makes her sometimes collide with the similarly minded Marisa Kirisame.[5]

In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, Hieda no Akyuu writes that, despite being a youkai, she has high understanding and friendship level to humans and presents a low danger level. If someone gets lost in the Forest of Magic and arrives at her house, she will gladly offer them shelter. However, Alice's house is filled with dolls, and since she is not very eager for conversation, it seems like the rare visitor is inclined to immediately flee as they find it eerie.[1][2] In chapters 5 and 6 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, the Three Fairies of Light accidentally arrived at her house and Alice was hospitable to them, providing tea and cake, and extends an offer of friendship after finding out their true identities as weak fairies. She likewise showed amicability to Sakuya Izayoi in Immaterial and Missing Power, leading her out of the forest when she became lost.[6]

As a former human, Alice does not perform the usual act of attacking humans like most youkai, but she unexpectedly enjoys fighting and upon being challenged to battle, she gladly accepts.[1] Unlike Marisa, when fighting with danmaku, she values brains and strategy over raw power.[7] She does not find dominating her opponent with overwhelming power fun at all, and instead tries to fight while only slightly exceeding her opponent's abilities, not even showing her full power when losing. This is because she believes that it would be the end of the line if she lost while using all her strength, a personality trait that is compared to Reimu Hakurei.[5]

Magicians are a race that have their purpose of existence bound to their magical technique, and Alice's magic manifests itself with her enchanted dolls. [8] While her physical and magical ability are only average, [2] she is very dextrous [9] and is also able to manipulate a great amount of dolls at the same time as if they were living beings - a skillfulness which is among the finest in Gensokyo. [2] Her magic does not give any life to the dolls, but allows her to control them with magical threads, manipulating them by magic instead of using her hands. [1] She can make the dolls move in nearly any way a human could, and can even have them control other dolls. She mostly leaves cooking, laundry, cleaning, and other chores to her dolls, and as such usually has her hands full concentrating on commanding them. The one thing Alice does not have the dolls do is creating other dolls - she leaves this task to her hand only. [1].

When fighting, her army of dolls highly outnumber her opponents, and defeating some of them will just cause them to be replaced. [1] Many of her dolls are additionally filled with gunpowder [10] or can be detonated with magic power; once she is done using them, she typically repurposes them to act as kamikaze bombs, [9] a fact referenced in many of her spell cards (such as Magic Sign "Artful Sacrifice" and One Lemmings' Parade) and skills (such as "Doll Cremation" and "Ooedo Explosive Marionette"). [11] However, her weakness is that, as she is concentrating on manipulating the dolls, her movements are sluggish and her fighting abilities are low, leaving herself to be a prime target.[1] She usually leaves the firing of danmaku entirely to the dolls - in the rare cases where she joins in, her attacks are weaker and more plain.[9] [12]

Her dolls have been seen talking in some instances, such as Marisa and Alice's good ending in Subterranean Animism and in the prologue of Imperishable Night. Additionally, in chapter 5 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, the dolls are seen with emotion, conversing back and forth with Alice, and even putting on snow clothing. However, Marisa points out that, as the dolls are not alive and are merely being manipulated to talk, it really is just a "lame one-person act".[13]

Alice's ultimate objective is to make a completely autonomous doll that have their own thoughts and move by their own volition. While she has poured her soul into making one, she still has not seen any success, and she admits that she has much to learn.[14] In order to perfect a completely autonomous doll, Alice does experiments relating to the link between the doll and the soul. One such experiment involved nailing humanoid straw dolls to trees - she stated that, as this causes the subject to feel pain as well, understanding this dynamic would allow her to better understand this link.[14] In Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, she states that string between the body and soul is the same link that allows her to manipulate dolls. [15] Despite the effort she has put into creating a completely autonomous doll, she admits that dolls that she controls herself are more useful than one that would think for themselves.[16]

Occupation

Alice generally stays in the Forest of Magic, rarely venturing outside, and isn't interested about what other youkai do. [3][17] While she usually doesn't concern herself with incidents, she will investigate for herself if no one else seems to be solving the issue. [18] Despite being a puppeteer, she states that she does not put on performances for the public or sell her dolls, and since she makes her own dolls, she never goes out to buy them.[3] However, Akyuu writes that she performs with her dolls in front of crowds during festivals, and that her main place of activity is "Any kind of place".[1] Additionally, Aya Shameimaru encounters her in the Human Village in stage 3 of Shoot the Bullet, and she can be seen in the village again during Hopeless Masquerade.

Possessions

Dolls

Alice has a very large amount of dolls of different kinds at her house. As the Forest of Magic is quite humid, the conditions cause the dolls to become damaged without her constant care. [4] Her spell cards names usually name dolls based on certain locations, such as Darkness Sign "Foggy London Dolls" or Blue Sign "Fraternal French Dolls". [9][19]

She additionally has named individual dolls: her Shanghai Doll fires a straight piercing laser, while her Hourai Doll uses a powered up version of that attack.[20][21] The Goliath Doll is another doll created by Alice which was still in the testing stages at the time of Touhou Hisoutensoku.[22]

Grimoire

In Mystic Square Extra Stage, Alice appears with a black book with "Grimoire of Alice" written on it, from which she recites spells and claiming that it has "the ultimate magic". However, in most later games, she appears with a book that has a black cover with no label. In Strange and Bright Nature Deity, she accuses the Three Fairies of Light of trying to steal it.[3]

Species

In her Imperishable Night profile, she is said to be a magician as a species, in contrast to Marisa, who is a human that practices magic. In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, she is described as a magician youkai that used to be human and became a magician by using "abandon food" magic. It is also said that she has only recently become a magician, and because of this, she apparently still continues human habits like eating and sleeping, despite them not being necessary.[1]

The stage 3 boss, kinda ordinary magician.
Mainly she possess the ability to handle magic.

She is a versatile magician, that has no specific strong or weak point in any area. If you ask me, she is similar to Marisa, or rather I'd say a youkai version of Marisa.

Alice has an obsession with collecting things as well, and has the habit of collecting magic items, especially magic books. As they both share the same hobby, she often clashes with Marisa so their relation is like loggerheads. Most recently, she is interested in collecting dolls that have a story associated with them.

She had no evident reason to attack Reimu and company. They were chosen for the target of her magic because they were there. Dominating the enemy with overwhelming power is not fun at all for Alice, so she always sees her opponent's reaction and tries to fight with power that exceeds the opponent by a hair. Even if she loses, she doesn't show her full power.

That's because she thinks it would be the end of the rope for her if she lost with full power. In this aspect, her personality is somewhat similar to Reimu.

A pure magician. While her appearance is almost identical to humans, she is not one.

She is a kind of so called humanoid youkai.

Her house is crammed with a lot of dolls. The sight is so spooky that it scares rare visitors away. The house of dolls is strangest even in the forest of the bizarre. It's no wonder that they tend to run away from there.

Her personality is indifferent to others, and is easily attached to magic. She puts on a confident attitude, but she actually also has a timid side.

She is quite average in melee fighting. Both her body movement and magic using are average. Instead of that she has very high skillfulness, which enables her to control many dolls as if they're living beings. This skillfulness is among the finest among all of Gensokyo.

Seven-Colored Puppeteer, Alice Margatroid

A magician living in the Forest of Magic.

She possess the ability to use magic. Puppetry is a type of magic too.

She rarely goes out by herself, but she had no other choice this time.

She has many similarities to Marisa, namely living in the Forest of Magic, being a magician and having an obsession with collecting things.

However, they have an absolute difference in that Alice is a magician as a species while Marisa is a human magician.

Other than that, they're also different in using forest's mushroom as preference or not.

Of course, Alice is the one not using them. However, it is not because of such matter that makes both on bad terms.

Magic is her weapon. A magician's magic is always originally developed by the magician.

Notes
She teams with Marisa this time.
Normal speed only applies when she is used as a solo character.
Her laser penetrates and lasts as long as the player wishes, so it's unexpectedly strong. Good against both bosses and weaklings.
It's her doll that is shooting the laser though.
Recommended for those who want to be done quickly.

A puppeteer that lives in the forest.

She felt something odd about the geyser that erupted, but since youkai prefer not to go underground she worried over what to do. That's when she noticed that Marisa was especially interested in the geyser, so she convinced Marisa to investigate the underground for her. She told her that investigating the hot spring would be a fun game, and pointed her towards the source of the geyser. She also made her carry dolls that had Yukari's remote control devices in them.

ZUN's comment from Dai Touhouten (PCB) plaque

Initially introduced in Touhou 5, Mystic Square.

If we were introducing her like the original story, it'd be a display of Hakurei Reimu's performance than anything (although I doubt if that was really the case), so I introduced her as one of Marisa's peers.
In most fictions, a puppeteer is often portrayed as someone who infuses souls into puppets, making them sentient, but what she achieved is to control all the puppets using her own will.
How dexterous!

ZUN's comment from Dai Touhouten (IN) plaque

She appears as Marisa's buddy as a fellow magician in this game.

In the Touhou Project series, "magician" can both be an occupation and a race, and Alice falls under the race category.
A race whose purpose of existence is bound to magic.
That's why she has dolls around her enchanted with magic.

Character Design

Alice, as illustrated in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense

Origin

ZUN states that he originally based her off Alice from Megami Tensei and Alice from Asura Blade: Sword of Dynasty.[23] Of course, a major inspiration is also the titular protagonist of Lewis Carroll's famous novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - the majority of enemies in Mystic Square's Extra Stage are card soldiers of the same type as those in the Walt Disney animated movie version of the novel. The title of the theme used in that stage also directly translates to "Alice in Wonderland".

Name

Her full name is Alice Margatroid (アリス・マーガトロイド). She had no surname in Mystic Square. Her surname, Margatroid, is derived from a real surname, Murgatroyd. The inspiration is most likely Miss Murgatroyd from Agatha Christie's book A Murder is Announced. The Japanese transliteration of Murgatroyd is identical to Alice's surname, Maagatoroido (マーガトロイド), so it is possible the change in spelling is an error rather than deliberate. Murgatroyd is also a nickname for the vampire in Kim Newman's Anno Dracula. On a more interesting note, in the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of the previously mentioned Agatha Christie book, Alice Arnold was responsible for the role of Miss Murgatroyd.

Design

Alice was first seen in Mystic Square wearing a pink/white dress with a blue apron, a matching headband with a ribbon on the side, as well as white socks. She has blonde hair and gold eyes like in all of her later appearances (except Perfect Cherry Blossom). She carries her signature grimoire since the Extra Stage.

In Perfect Cherry Blossom, she has blue eyes and has a red band in her hair. She wears a light blue dress with long white sleeves and two pink ribbons, one going round her neck and another one around her waist.

In Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and Touhou Hisoutensoku, Alice's sprites show her to have blue eyes, but they are gold in her portraits. Her book is wrapped up in a red ribbon, and she has strings on her fingers to control her dolls. She is also seen wearing black boots.

Upon first glance she is said to look like a doll.[1] Her height is stated to be "fairly tall".[24]

Alice first appeared in Mystic Square. She showed up in the third stage as a young-looking magician with the title "Girl of Death". She confronted the heroine invading Makai but was defeated.

She later appeared as "Alice of the Magic Land" in the Extra Stage. She appears so she can finally beat the heroine, this time confident because she has her grimoire at hand, but loses anyway.

In Perfect Cherry Blossom, she did not have any special reason to fight the heroine, and it was only because she was there by chance that she became an opponent.[5]

In Imperishable Night, Alice realizes something is wrong with the Moon and, after failing to investigate the issue herself, takes Marisa with her by enticing her with some rare grimoires.[18] Alice then becomes the youkai part of the Magic Team. After defeating Wriggle Nightbug and Mystia Lorelei in their way out of the forest, they reach the Human Village, where they are attacked by Keine Kamishirasawa. After entering in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, they are confronted by Reimu Hakurei, who thinks they are the culprits. After defeating her, they entered the mansion and found Eirin Yagokoro and Reisen Udongein Inaba. Depending on what the player chooses, Marisa and Alice fight Eirin or Kaguya Houraisan after defeating the lunar rabbit.

After hearing from Kaguya Houraisan that there was a trial of guts inside the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, both her and Marisa decide to come back. There, they find and beat Fujiwara no Mokou.

Subterranean Animism

Alice is one of the Marisa's possible partners, who contacts with her thanks to her dolls. Alice is perturbed that her dolls are going out of control near the geyser behind the Hakurei Shrine, and convinces Marisa that investigating the underground would be a fun game. [25] Marisa enters the Underworld defeating Kisume, Yamame Kurodani and Parsee Mizuhashi until she finds Yuugi Hoshiguma, who tells her to go to the Palace of the Earth Spirits. There, she finds and defeats Satori Komeiji who leads her to the Remains of Blazing Hell, where Rin Kaenbyou tries to stop her. She then fights the the culprit thinking the geyser will stop if she defeats her.

Marisa decides to come back to the shrine on the mountain after hearing Utsuho Reiuji talk about she got her powers from both gods, but her and Alice only find Koishi Komeiji there, who attacks them because she heard her sister and Utsuho Reiuji talk about Marisa.

Immaterial and Missing Power

Alice goes investigate the abnormal mist and amount of festival banquets that were taking place that summer. Alice goes around investigating her neighbour, Reimu Hakurei and Sakuya Izayoi to put an end to them when Patchouli Knowledge tells her to have a "nice, straightforward discussion" with the mist, which gives Alice a little hint. She asks Youmu Konpaku if she could help her communicating with a phantom the size of Gensokyo, but decides to go to the Hakurei Shrine, where the feast was going to take place. There, she finds and beats Yukari Yakumo, who forces the culprit, Suika Ibuki, to appear, and Alice defeats her to solve the incident.

Shoot the Bullet

In Shoot the Bullet, Aya Shameimaru encountered Alice on stage 3 and took photos of her danmaku.

Scarlet Weather Rhapsody

Alice sees scarlet clouds and the chaotic weather, and thinks that it is a prelude to an earthquake. Alice goes around asking people if they know what the scarlet clouds were to Reimu Hakurei, Youmu Konpaku, Patchouli Knowledge and Sakuya Izayoi, with the shrine maiden saying that an earthquake already destroyed her shrine. However, it is not until she faces Iku Nagae that she encounters anyone who could prove or disprove her hypothesis. Alice fights her thinking she is the culprit, but after being defeated, Iku argues that she is not the real culprit. It is not until some time later that she finds the real culprit and defeats her to end the incident.

Touhou Hisoutensoku

In Touhou Hisoutensoku she created a giant doll, called the Goliath Doll. Marisa Kirisame noticed a figure in the Forest of Magic and told Cirno about it. Alice then tested it in a battle against Cirno, who thought the giant doll is Daidarabotchi.

Alice does not actually appear here, but a pseudo-Alice who was sent by the Giant Catfish to assassinate Hong Meiling in her dreams, but was defeated.

Hopeless Masquerade

Alice made a background cameo appearance in Hopeless Masquerade on the Human Village stage. She is seen at the far right-hand side of the screen standing around.

Alice was making straw effigies and nailing them to trees behind the Hakurei Shrine, what made Aya Shameimaru think that someone was cursing people. However, after some time, she could interview Alice and she explained that was not the case, as she only was doing that as part of her investigation to create a full independent doll.

In the interview, Alice claims that if anybody sees the ritual will be weaker and that if Aya could stay away from those dolls, it will perfect. When asked about why she wants to make an independent doll, she comments that long ago she saw something like that, and after that she started thinking ways to make one.

Strange and Bright Nature Deity

In chapters 5 and 6 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, she provided help as inviting the Three Fairies of Light to her home and providing tea and cake. After inquiring them about how her house and the food and tea was, Sunny Milk decide to pile up lies to not say that they were fairies looking for a grimoire. When Alice notices the lies, she tells them that the grimoire they were looking for was hers, becoming very angry and prepared to attack the fairies when some birds broke into her house and started biting the fairies. After they told her that they were really fairies, she said that it was no use fighting and let them leave.

In chapter 9, Alice is one of the people the fairies ask to help them with the vines surrounding their house, but she said that she didn't care what happened with other youkai. However, she recommended visiting Marisa to ask her instead.

Perfect Memento in Strict Sense

Hieda no Akyuu writes an in-universe encyclopedic article on Alice as part of the Gensokyo Chronicle.

The Grimoire of Marisa

Alice is one of the people whose spell cards Marisa Kirisame documents, adding descriptions, comments and considerations to imitate them.

Foul Detective Satori

In chapter 7 of Foul Detective Satori, it is revealed that Alice was spiritually attacked and left unconscious by Mizuchi Miyadeguchi possessing Marisa. After becoming unpossessed, Marisa tends to Alice, unaware of her actions. In the latter half of chapter 9, Marisa is interrogated by Satori Komeiji, Yuyuko Saigyouji, and Youmu Konpaku over her actions while being possessed.

Whispered Oracle of Hakurei Shrine

Reimu Hakurei writes a fortune slip about Alice as a way of cleaning up in the aftermath of an incident.

Relationships

Marisa Kirisame

Marisa Kirisame is a fellow magician of the Forest of Magic. They were partners in Imperishable Night, and she was supporting Marisa in Subterranean Animism. In the former, Alice called out to Marisa due to her being "used to" resolving incidents, and offered some of her grimoires as compensation. In the latter, Alice is one of the companions Marisa can have, communicating with her thanks to her dolls. They also met in Perfect Cherry Blossom, Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and Touhou Hisoutensoku.

Based on their interactions, they seem to have a rivalry of sorts, arguing who is the best magician (like in Perfect Cherry Blossom), who is more serious dealing with incidents (with Alice complaining how unserious Marisa is or Marisa saying Alice cannot do anything but say her name in Imperishable Night) or just insulting each other in general. However, they seemed to argue less after Imperishable Night. Furthermore, Alice slept next to Marisa at the latter's house in the Magic Team's bad ending, tagged along with Marisa's escapes on the other endings, and even once recommended Marisa's shop to the Three Fairies of Light when they needed some youkai extermination [26] indicating that they seem to be friends. Additionally, Marisa cared for an unconscious Alice after the latter was attacked by Mizuchi Miyadeguchi[27]

Minor Relationships

Mima

At the end of Mystic Square, Mima takes Alice as her maid, releasing her some time later.

Three Fairies of Light

Alice is one of the few youkai the Three Fairies have sought assistance from.

In Strange and Bright Nature Deity, although they lied to Alice telling her that they weren't fairies who prank humans, at the end she decided that being bit by birds is enough and she let them leave her house without any grudge.[3] Alice created dolls of the three fairies to poke at them during their second visit when they asked her if she could help them with the vines covering their house.[26]

Eirin Yagokoro

Alice is a regular customer at Eientei, purchasing the Butterfly Dream Pill from Eirin. However, Eirin herself declined on commenting any more details.[28]

Additional Information

  • Alice appeared on the cover of Mystic Square with a cat.
  • Alice appeared in the Music Room and Score Screen background of Perfect Cherry Blossom.
  • Being known as the "Seven-Colored Puppeteer" or "Rainbow Puppeteer", Alice apparently believes in a correlation between color and power. During her dialogue with Reimu Hakurei in Perfect Cherry Blossom, she asserts Reimu's powers are only equal to 28.5714% (or 2/7) of her own powers, due to Reimu's outfit only consisting of two colors. This appears to be a recurring theme in Perfect Cherry Blossom, as Yukari Yakumo, Ran Yakumo and Chen are all named after colors and have relative power equivalent to their colors' place on the visual spectrum.
    • In chapter 6 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, Sunny Milk mentions that she is looking for a magician with a grimoire that "shines wonderfully with all the seven colors of the light". Alice does not deny this to be false. This might be the in-universe explanation for her title.
  • Alice's alternate palette from Scarlet Weather Rhapsody resembles Hina-Ichigo, a doll from the manga series Rozen Maiden. In Touhou Hisoutensoku, she has palettes resembling the other Rozen Maiden dolls: Suiseiseki, Souseiseki, Suigintou, Shinku, Kanaria, and Kirakishou. Add the fact that, in Rozen Maiden, the aforementioned dolls are battling for the title of "Alice", the perfect doll.
  • Alice is one of the two characters in the whole series who appears 3 times in a single stage: Twice as a midboss and the third as the actual boss of stage 3 in Perfect Cherry Blossom. The other is Seiran in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom.
  • Alice is one of the five characters in the whole series who appears as a boss two times in different stages of the same game: As the third and extra boss in Mystic Square. The others are Rika in Story of Eastern Wonderland, Yuuka Kazami in Lotus Land Story, Junko in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom and Okina Matara in Hidden Star in Four Seasons.
  • Alice seems to have connections with Dolls in Pseudo Paradise. One involves how one of the honest men died from being "nailed to a tree" despite being inside, which relates to Alice's article in Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red about her nailing straw effigies to trees. Others include how the men stumble upon a "Western-style building deep within the forest" and how the culprit was a "beautiful blonde girl".
  • Alice's background cameo sprite in Hopeless Masquerade has additional frames of her blinking, which were unused in the final game.
