The Hakurei Shrine.

A shrine on the eastern edge of Gensokyo.
It's a "Youkai Shrine" where youkai come to visit more often than humans.
The main shrine, destroyed by mon coins, was restored to its previous state.

Marisa: "Woo, I'm glad that the shrine got rebuilt."

Reimu: "Mmm, well, Suika and Yuugi rebuilt it for me...

I'll be sober for a while, physically speaking."

Marisa: "I-I see...Sorry 'bout all the mishaps."

Cirno: "Hey! Eat this!"

Piece "No way! Apollo Smash!"

Larva "Not quite~! Take that!"

Marisa: "So, what're those fairies(idiots) doin'?"

Reimu: "...You know the answer to that question.

Menko.[1] They're playing Menko."

Marisa: "...Ain't that the boy's game where you play with with cardboard?"

Reimu: "They didn't know how to use the Onryou Currency,

so they asked me to teach them."

Marisa: "You could've at least had 'em play Ohajiki[2] or somethin'."

Marisa: "Hold on. You're lettin' em play with those things?!"

Reimu: "I purified them before you came here, so there's no need to worry.

...Though, it wasn't really necessary, I guess."

Marisa: "What do you mean?"

Reimu: "I found a book on Buddhist cleansing rituals in the storehouse once it'd been rebuilt.
It contained a method of exorcism that was just right for this incident.
During Setsubun, instead of throwing beans at evil spirits, you'd throw money at them."

Marisa: "So, those Menko battles are also a way to ward off evil?"

Reimu: "That's right. The marketplace god is kind of unreliable..."

Marisa: "Huh. How did you come up with that? Almost like you're a shrine maiden or somethin'."

Reimu: "What did you think I was?"

Marisa: "Bad company that I can't escape, maybe?"

Marisa snickered, but on the inside, she held her tongue.

Because she unknowingly and unconsciously arrived at a solution
nearly identical to the "Assist Spirit Strike",
a method of exorcism she had devised while solving the incident.

Ending No. 6 - Unwitting Exorcism Ceremony
Congrats on a No-Continue Clear!

  1. Menko (メンコ), also known as Bettan or Patchin, is a Japanese children's game similar to the game "Milk Caps" (aka "Pogs"), in which thick circular (or rectangular) cards are slapped into the ground to overturn other cards.
  2. A Japanese children's game similar to marbles, played with coin-shaped pieces made of plastic or colored glass.
