Tupai the Chupacabra in Forbidden Scrollery

A chupacabra or chupacabras is a cryptid native to the American continents, particularly from the southwestern United States to Latin America. It has reportedly been sighted as far north as Maine and as far south as Chile and even in Russia or The Phillipines. It was first widely reported in Puerto Rico in the mid-'90s.

Chupacabras can be literally translated as "goat-sucker", from chupar ("to suck") and cabra ("goat"). They are known for puportedly piercing and draining their victims, mostly livestock, of their blood. However, many reported attacks are assumed to be due to canines afflicted with mange.

They are typically described as being small, about three to four feet, and lizard-like with spines down its back. They may otherwise be known as more canine-like. They typically have fangs and claws which are used to pierce the victim.

Chupacabras in Touhou

Tupai, a chupacabra, is the pet of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, mistakenly named after treeshrews, otherwise known as tupai. It escapes the Scarlet Devil Mansion prior to Forbidden Scrollery chapter 6. After drinking its fill of sake around the Human Village, arousing the suspicions of humans, it is captured by Hieda no Akyuu in chapter 7 after setting up a trap. Akyuu and Marisa Kirisame don't know what to make of it, but Mamizou Futatsuiwa drops by and lets them know just what it is. While searching for it Sakuya Izayoi describes it as being "sharper than a goblin".

It is fast, with good jumping ability, with fangs and sharp claws on its hands and feet. It is so fast that Sakuya needs to stop time to capture it again after Reimu Hakurei breaks Mamizou's seal on a jar used to hold it. Typically kept in a cage, it was adopted as part of Remilia Scarlet's interest in expensive items and imports from the Outside World. She believes it to be cute, while the rest of the mansion residents see it as a convenient way to occupy Remilia and Flandre Scarlet.
