Battles

Battle screen

At the beginning of a battle, the player can choose between fighting, escaping, and viewing the HP stats of all enemies and playable characters.

When attacking, the player selects an ability from each of the characters in the party. A character may attack with their equipped weapon, or use up to four assigned skills at the expense of using MP. At certain times when "Last Word" is activated for the character, they may also initiate a "Last Word" skill. The player can also use the L and R buttons to switch between shikigami, and use their magic spells, at the expense of the playable character's MP.

Once all character actions have been inputted, all characters - both enemy and ally - will attack based on their speed.

Upon losing all HP, your party member will faint in the battle. When the battle is over, as a penalty, any fainted party member will receive less experience points than those who survived the battle.

During battle, it should be noted that a character can learn a melee skill depending on the aptitude level of a physical attack type. When this happens, with a unique sound effect, a light bulb will appear above the character and she will perform the newly learned skill, replacing the melee attack she was supposed to perform.

Weapons

As a character uses attacks of a certain element, that character's ability with that element will increase. When the prerequisites are met (which are various depending on the skill, though most will just be randomly learned when your weapon level is high enough) a character has a chance to learn a new weapon skill, which can be set on the equipment menu after you win the battle.

  • Swords: No special characteristics, deal slashing damage. Many sword skills have slayer effects that do bonus damage to specific enemy types.
  • Spears: Higher accuracy but lower attack compared to swords, deal piercing damage. Deal bonus damage against enemies with low defense. Many spear skills can interrupt an enemy's attack, making them best on high speed characters.
  • Maces: Low accuracy and reduce speed very slightly, but highest attack power and ignore a portion of enemy defense. Deal blunt damage. Many mace skills have debuffing effects, making them best on high dexterity characters.
  • Staves: Low attack power, but raise the damage of magic. Cannot use/learn any weapon skills, but physically attacking with them will raise blunt level. Deal blunt damage.
