Doppelganger

From Touhou Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Doppelganger (ドッペルゲンガー) are a supernatural phenomenon that can be found in various mythologies across the world. Typically fully identical to their human counterpart, they are often considered a bad omen, and meeting ones own doppelganger is usually said to have grave consequences.

Doppelganger in Touhou

In Touhou Project, doppelganger are "youkai-like beings" with a physical body, who seem to share their consciousness at the very least to some degree with their counterpart. Doremy Sweet thinks that a meeting between a person and their doppelganger would lead to one of the two being obliterated [1].

Currently there is one known doppelganger in Gensokyo, that of Sumireko Usami, who takes over her doppelganger's body every time she is asleep, which allows her to visit Gensokyo in her dreams. Notably, Sumireko's dream self from the Dream World was capable of doing this as well, which rendered her unable to access Gensokyo for a while.

Characteristics

It seems that the Doppelganger only has a physical body when taken over by Sumireko in her dreams. According to Doremy, that is because a doppelganger can not exist without the original (in the same world). The doppelganger does, however, have a fully separate consciousness of her own, and only shares her memories with the real Sumireko up to the point of her creation as a consequence of the events of Urban Legend in Limbo, and is capable of forming her own memories [2] [3].

The doppelganger also was able to move freely in the Dream World in Violet Detector, despite only being a disembodied spirit at the time after the Dream Sumireko stole her body, "unable to move" before being transported there.
