Gensokyo Timeline

From Touhou Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

→ Below is a timeline of events within the Touhou Project universe. Please note that there is speculation involved in the dating of some events.

There are two calendars in common use in Gensokyo: the Gregorian calendar, which is the main calendar used by Gensokyo's inhabitants, and a youkai lunisolar calendar, which is generally restricted to Youkai Mountain.[1] The youkai calendar is based on the phase of the moon - as a result, it runs somewhat offset from ours. All events in this timeline will use the Gregorian calendar with estimated youkai calendar dates in brackets for important events where they can be deduced (under the assumption that the youkai calendar is determined in the same way as the Japanese lunisolar calendar), except for articles from the Bunbunmaru Newspaper and the Kakashi Spirit News, which are originally dated in the youkai calendar (the numbering is assumed to represent issue numbers in each month; see Notes below for more details). CE (Common Era) and BCE (Before Common Era) are used instead of AD and BC.

Years are numbered as "Season X", where season 0 equates to 1885. This is therefore conjectured to be the year that the Great Hakurei Barrier was created.

Month names

The lunisolar calendar uses the traditional names of the Japanese months, from the old lunar calendar. In outside Japan, these were discarded in favor of simple numbered months (ichigatsu, nigatsu, etc.) with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, but are still commonplace in poetry and historical television.

  • April - Deutzia Month (卯月 uzuki)
  • May - Planting Month (皐月 satsuki)
  • June - Month of Water (水無月 minazuki)[2]
  • July - Book Month (文月 fumitsuki)
  • August - Leaf Month (葉月 hazuki)
  • September - Long-lasting Month (長月 nagatsuki)
  • October - Month of Gods / Godless Month (神無月 kannazuki/kaminashizuki)[3]
  • November - Frost Month (霜月 shimotsuki)
  • December - Priest-running Month (師走 shiwasu)
  • January - Affection Month (睦月 mutsuki)
  • February - More Clothes Month (如月/衣更着 kisaragi)
  • March - Sprouting Month (弥生 yayoi)

In addition, the calendar also has an intercalary month, simply named "Thirteenth Month".[1] The method for determining placement of the intercalary month is unknown.

New Year's in Gensokyo is believed to be on the 1st of the Deutzia Month. For the purpose of this timeline the months are numbered the same as their corresponding months in the Japanese calendar (e.g. Uzuki = 4).

Historical events

Ancient Times

4.6 billion years ago? Gods create the Earth[4]
Paleozoic era
(Early Cambrian to Late Devonian 542-374 million years ago)
The life that arose from the seas battled for existence, and its conclusion (Late Devonian extinction 374 million years ago?) resulted in the oceans being tainted with impurity. The survivors of the fight for survival advanced their way onto land, which then knew no impurity.[5]
Paleozoic era - Cenozoic era
(Early Carboniferous 374 million years ago to present era)
On land, the epic battle for survival unfolded once more. There were very few victors, and most were destroyed in the battle, becoming extinct. The land becomes impure as a result.[5]
  • It is said that almost all species of life that have ever existed on Earth are now extinct.
  • Around 200,000 years ago the first humans evolve to continue the endless fight for survival.
Considerable antiquity The keystone is pulled out to create Heaven. All creatures on Earth perish as a result.[6]
  • So long ago that even Eirin has not seen it.[6]
  • Possibly refers to the Permian–Triassic extinction event (~252 million years ago).
  • With no witness to the event, it cannot be guaranteed legitimacy.
25 million years ago Japan is created by Izanagi-no-mikoto.[7]
  • In reality, the Izanagi Plate is believed to have completely disappeared somewhere between 60 million and 20 million years ago.
Japanese mythology The hiding in the cave.
  • After Amaterasu-oomikami came out of the cave, the rope that was used to seal the cave was the start of femto fiber (shimenawa rope).[8]
  • In Nihon Shoki, Amaterasu-oomikami's younger brother Susanoo was exiled from Takamagahara.
Japanese mythology The White Rabbit of Inaba.
  • As the White Rabbit of Inaba was even further in the past than the tenson kourin, and this tenson kourin was more than 1,792,470 years before Emperor Jimmu went on his eastern expedition.
  • Emperor Jimmu's father Ugayafukiaezu lived several hundreds of thousands of years (comment on Keine's spell card Origin Sign "Ephemerality 137")
(as the child and great-grandchild, about 1.79 million ÷ about 3 ≈ several hundred thousands of years, and indirectly contains the topic of the tenson kourin.)
  • Lord Daikoku (Ookuninushi) seems to be a fine young man, and the girl rabbits seem to adore him
Japanese mythology Surrender of the country
  • Amatsukami destroyed much of Ookuninushi's land, but fearing a rebellion from Ookuninushi, Ookuninushi was sealed in Izumo Temple using femto fiber.[8]
Japanese mythology Comparison of the heights of the mountains[9]
  • In the past, Iwanagahime and Konohana-Sakuyahime lived in Mount Fuji.
  • Konohana-Sakuyahime compared the heights of Mount Fuji and Yatsugatake.
  • Since Yatsugatake was higher, by the enraged Sakuyahime, Yatsugatake was broken, and became its current form.
  • Iwanagahime, tired of this kind of little sister, left Mount Fuji, and moved to the Yatsugatake that had become short and unattractive.
  • The Yatsugatake that was once Japan's highest mountain turned into illusion, and became Youkai Mountain
  • Iwanagahime furthermore, at around the time of 100 years ago, moved to Gensokyo's Youkai Mountain (once Yatsugatake)
  • In the variations of the legend of the mountain comparison, in this instance there was also one where a shed teardrop became Lake Suwa (Suwa-ko). The tale of the god of Mount Tateshina crying and the tale of the god of Yatsugatake crying has various patterns. Within it, there was also the theory that Mount Yatsugatake was once the Izu Islands.
  • In the Nihon Shinwa, Sakuyabime afterwards became Ninigi's wife (= Emperor Jimmu's great-grandmother).
  • The destruction of the mountain Yatsugatake (old Amidadake) was 200-250 thousand years ago.
Chinese mythology Hou Yi shoots down the Nine Sunbirds.
  • Occurs during China's Xia Dynasty (established circa 2070 BCE).

This leads to the brightening of the Hells that Hecatia Lapislazuli was overseeing.

  • Houyi becomes the ruler of a kingdom during the Xia dynasty period. He usurpted the previous king that was Junko's husband and took over the land, becoming Junko's new husband. Shortly after he would cause the death of Junko's son, Bó Fēng. She later would corroborate with one of Houyi's ministers (possibly Feng Meng) to assassinate her husband to avenge her son.
Far in the past Tsukuyomi takes his most trusted relatives to the moon. Development of the lunar capital, start of lunarian civilization.
ZUN has stated that the Lunarians are the Amatsukami (Heavenly Gods) of ancient times.[10]
  • The lunar capital was constructed by Lord Tsukuyomi and under the guidance of Eirin Yagokoro.
  • Eirin has existed even longer than Tsukuyomi. [11] As she was stated to be a goddess, [12] more than likely Eirin is supposed to be Yagokoro no Omoikane. According to the Shinto creation myth, Omoikane is the son of the creator deity Takamimisubi, which makes them older than even Izanagi and Izanami.
  • Lunarians living in a pure land have no life span.
  • Tsukuyomi (More than likely Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto) seems to be related to Amaterasu Oomikami as siblings.
Chinese mythology Chang'e (also known by the Japanese pronunciation of Jouga) drank the elixir of immortality and went to the moon.
  • The elixir that Chang'e drank was made by Eirin Yagokoro.[13]
  • The era of the legend of Chang'e was in the time of 22 centuries BCE (more than 4100 years ago)
  • The mochi pounding (medicine pounding) that the rabbits pound has gone on for several thousands of years.
Japanese mythology Great Suwa War
  • At those times, Suwako Moriya's leading edge was iron weapons, but Kanako was able to rust the entire arsenal by holding out a thin vine, and as a result they surrendered.
  • Iron was imported into Japan at around 300 CE, however the usage of iron itself (including places outside Japan) has been recorded previously, and so determining the era of this is difficult
  • In the "Treatise on Geography" (地理志) in the Book of Han, it is said that in the later Han dynasty it was divided into a hundred or more countries, and if it is the case that "the expansion of the Yamato State = the invasion of Kanako and other Yamato gods," then it would have occurred in the first few centuries CE.
  • Furthermore, by research in recent years, as a united country the Yamato State came into existence in the latter half of the third century, and it has been considered that in half of the fourth century, it expanded its territory into the Kōshin'etsu and Tōhoku regions.
  • In the genealogy of the Moriya family, the Moriya god was the first generation, the adoption of Mononobe no Moriya's child was the 26th generation, and is currently in the 78th generation.
  • However, concerning Touhou, Sanae's last name is Kochiya. So there is a discrepancy.
  • Basing it on the legend passed down the Moriya family, one can discern the Great Suwa War (the fight between the Moriya god and Takeminakata) to be around 1500-1600 years ago.
478/07/07 Mizue no Uranoshimako goes to the lunar capital.
574/02/07 Birth of Toyosatomimi no Miko (1/1 in the lunar calendar)
Before 587 CE Seiga Kaku comes to Japan.
  • Recommends Taoism to Toyosatomimi no Miko.
587 July By Mononobe no Futo's secret maneuvering, the Teibi no Ran broke out.
  • Destruction of the Mononobe clan.
622/04/08 In order to become a shikaisen, Toyosatomimi no Miko goes to sleep.
Around 648 Birth of Hieda no Are
  • According to Kunio Yanagita, there is also a theory that Hieda no Are was female.
Before Taketori Monogatari Birth of Fujiwara no Mokou
  • Father was Fujiwara no Fuhito?
  • Fuhito's sons were first son (680), second son (681), third son (694), and fourth son (695).
  • Fuhito's daughters were first daughter (683), second daughter, third daughter (701), fourth daughter, and fifth daughter.
  • Fujiwara no Mokou's existence was hidden.
Around 1300 years ago (672-707 CE) Kaguya Houraisan is banished to earth; Taketori Monogatari; flight of Kaguya and Eirin. Afterwards, they live hidden in Eientei.
  • In Taketori Monogatari, when Kaguya-hime was to go back to the moon, it was more than twenty years later.
  • Fujiwara no Fuhito, on whom Prince Kuramochi of the "Jeweled Branch of Hourai" was modeled, lived from 659-720.
  • Chunagon Isonokami no Maro, on whom Isonokami no Marotari of the "Swallow's Cowrie Shell" was modeled, lived from 640-717.
  • Tajihi no Shima, on whom Ishidzukuri no Miko of "Buddha's Stone Bowl" was modeled, lived from 624-701.
  • Udaijin Abe no Miushi of the "Robe of the Fire Rat" lived from 635-703.
  • Dainagon Ootomo no Miyuki of the "Jewel from the Dragon's Neck" lived from 646-701.
  • The Mikado, on whom Emperor Mommu was modeled, lived from 683-707. (Investiture of crown prince: 696, reign: 697-707)
At the end of Taketori Monogatari Fujiwara no Mokou drinks the Hourai Elixir and becomes a Hourai Immortal, and disappears from public.
681-712 CE Hieda no Are compiles the Kojiki.
Well over 1000 years ago (nearly 1300 years ago?)
~1200 years ago (~800 CE) Hieda no Aichi, first child of Miare, begins the Gensokyo Chronicles.
  • Compilation began around Aichi's 18th birthday.
825 CE Mizue no Uranoshimako returns to his home village.
  • Urashima Jinja is erected later that same year (825/07/22).
More than 1000 years ago
  • (~900 CE) - Legends of Mt. Shigi (set during reign of Emperor Daigo), Myouren Hijiri passes away.
  • Minamitsu Murasa becomes captain of the Palanquin Ship.
  • Byakuren Hijiri is sealed in Hokkai and the Palanquin Ship is sealed in the underground.
  • Yuyuko Saigyouji's father passes away beneath the Saigyou Ayakashi a little over 1000 years ago.
    • The historical figure Saigyou lived from 1118 to 1190/03/23 (2/16 old calendar), and entered the priesthood in 1140)
  • Yuyuko Saigyouji dies and her body is used to seal the Saigyou Ayakashi; Yuyuko given reign over Hakugyokurou
  • The first Genso-Lunar War for the Moon's Surface. (Yuyuko Saigyouji was "present" for the war where it was discovered ghosts could move about undetected, thus she probably became a ghost before it)
  • Last eruption of Youkai Mountain.[14]
990/04/28 Shuten-doji is exterminated by Minamoto No Yorimitsu and his "four big" subordinates.
  • The date, time, and day has going along what is told by the Kintoki Shrine.
About a thousand years ago Aya Shameimaru settles in Gensokyo
Summer 1153 Emperor Konoe begins to have nightmares. The cause is traced to a dark cloud that appears on the palace rooftop during the night. Minamoto no Yorimasa fires into the cloud and kills the youkai inside. (The Tale of the Heike)
  • The youkai was commonly believed to be a nue, but was actually a chimera and unrelated to the nue.[15]
Several hundred years after Taketori Monogatari Tewi Inaba reveals herself to the Eientei residents, and creates a partnership with them.
500 years ago+ Youkai Expansion Project.
300 years ago+ Youki Konpaku becomes Hakugyokurou's gardener.
~300-400 years ago (900-1000 years after Taketori Monogatari) Fujiwara no Mokou and Kaguya Houraisan re-encounter each other; they begin a cycle of repeatedly killing each other.
1707 Most recent eruption of Mount Fuji.
  • Mount Fuji lost its flame when Iwanaga-hime moved to Yatsugatake.[9]

End of Edo period, Meiji and afterwards

100 years ago+ Period of the 8th Child of Miare, Hieda no Aya.
  • During this time, humans begin becoming powerful enough to seriously challenge youkai.
  • Akyuu was the first Child of Miare after the border's creation, so Aya probably died before 1885.
1872-1885 CE First official circulation of Japanese paper money. (Predates the Great Hakurei Barrier)
1885 CE (0) Epoch of Gensokyo's season numbering.
  • Sexagenary cycle year.

Before the Windows era

PC-98 era

Highly Responsive to Prayers (created 1995, released November 1996)
Story of Eastern Wonderland (released August 15, 1997)
Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream (released December 29, 1997)
Lotus Land Story (released August 14, 1998)
Mystic Square (released December 30, 1998)

These PC-98 games shows the release dates as a possible reference, not what time the actual events take place. The canonicity of the PC-98 games is disputed (see Canon for details), however many later games in the series take place near their release dates, but certainly not on them.
Some later works and statements may imply they took place significantly later than their release dates. Cursory pieces of evidence taken together could imply Story of Eastern Wonderland through Mystic Square took place from 2001 to 2003.
  • Rinnosuke in Curiosities of Lotus Asia Chapter 22's first half believes that Marisa Kirisame only started using star magic after 2001, while Marisa's strategy guide in Story of Eastern Wonderland's omake says her third attack uses star magic, although that is just one attack. However, by the time Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream takes place, many of her attacks use stars.
  • Marisa and Reimu are indirectly referred to as "children" in Chapter 22's first half (2001), and Marisa is noted as a child in Lotus Land Story's manual. Although ZUN has stated he doesn't want to give specific ages to those two, the chronology from this becomes more reasonable if Lotus Land Story took place much later than 1998.
  • Reimu's profile states that Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, which takes place on 2003/08/12, is chronologically not too far from Mystic Square. Also Reimu says in a hidden dialogue that "It's been a while since my last job" in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.

Seihou Project

Shuusou Gyoku Extra Stage

This is most likely non-canon since the Seihou Project is set in the far future and is a separate series from Touhou all together with a different creator and writer. This is more than likely just a guest appearance with no regard for canonocity. However if one is to insist on a possible period of time this takes place, be aware the stage does not use the spell card rules, but would take place after the PC-98 games. If the stage predates the Hakurei spell card rules, a 2003 dating for Mystic Square would therefore imply a small window in 2003 for this to take place.

Notes

  • The Bunbunmaru and Kakashi articles are notated in the form e.g. 葉月の五 (Hazuki 5th), as opposed to the standard date form 葉月五日; it is believed that the last number is actually an issue number instead of a day number (e.g. 5th issue of Hazuki rather than 5th day of Hazuki). Supporting this is the fact that the numbers only pass 5 once (120th season, Kannazuki 13th, Mystia's article), which by this hypothesis may be explained by Aya putting out large numbers of extras for the tengu newspaper competition. Moreover, treating the numbers as dates causes a discrepancy between Imperishable Night (Harvest Moon Festival, so 15th day of Hazuki of 119th season) and Sakuya's article (119th season, Hazuki 3rd), which explicitly comes afterward. The timeline is written under this assumption.

  2. The kanji usually means 'none', but here it's used in an archaic form to show possession
  3. The kanji is probably being used to show possession as with Minazuki. However, there is a false etymology that claims that since in this month the Shinto kami gather at Izumo (in which the month is named Kamiarizuki, Month with Gods) there are no gods in the rest of the country. Other etymologies have been suggested.
