Description
gunjou ribon (lit. "ultramarine ribbon") is a 3 piece Touhou band arrangement circle known for their Touhou Rock arrangements. Arrangements by the circle have improved significantly since their first single released in 2011, this is due in part to the individual members becoming more skilled musicians and experienced arrangers, but is also due to the great improvements the band has made in the recording and sound engineering of their music. A notably change would take place in the circle's mixing style from 2014 to 2015 and would be exemplified by the release of 黎明日記, in addition to the general improvement in fidelity, vocals were also moved slightly further from the foreground and an out-of-focus mixing style would be more regularly used to further weave the vocals into the surrounding arrangement. Vocals for gunjou ribon are provided by 樹揚げ, who acts as the their lone arranger and guitarist, he was also credited with most of the circle's lyrics until the role of lyricist was taken over almost entirely by bassist にぃいち in 2014. Even though 樹揚げ may take on many creative roles within the circle, gunjou ribon is not a one one-man effort or a duo, but a band, and the contributions of にぃいち and たかちゃん as the bassist and drummer of that band have helped give the circle a level of authenticity in their instrumentation that surpasses many of their contemporaries.
Initially the band also featured a 4th member named ルコ, but in 2013 it was announced that she would be leaving the band due to her increasingly busy scheduled, she had been placed in a difficult situation by continuing to contribute to albums and perform during live shows but gunjou ribon made it clear in their announcement that life should always come first in such situations.[1] ルコ's role in the band overlapped in many ways with 樹揚げ's as she also arranged themes, played guitar and sang, but despite this her absence was felt on the album (リトルライムライト) released shortly after her departure was announced. Her departure also complicated, but did not denture live performances, and since 2013 gunjou ribon has relied on other circles friendly with the band for support during live shows,[2][3] since her departure ルコ has been credited with a special thanks on every album release by the circle.
The circle's main discography is broken up neatly into singles and albums, with tracks from singles usually being featured on subsequent albums, although not always. In addition to their main discography, the circle has also released a handful of collaboration albums with other circles and contributed to albums released under a collaborative circle called mmm, of which gunjou ribon is a member alongside Moja stick, Shin'ya Housou, Gorilla Kouen and TV SHOP ON THE SECOND FLOOR. A number of guest arrangements have also been contributed to albums released by other circles, some of which were later re-recorded and featured in their main discography while many others were not. Despite never appearing in their main discography, 樹揚げ's hand drawn illustrations have been used for their miscellaneous singles and as album covers for several other circles, notable examples include the album covers of 8686m, the album 騒想者たち, and the album mmm+. gunjou ribon's blog is called 群青日和 and features news regarding the circle including event attendance, live shows, and setlists.
