Hollow Song of Birds/Characters

From Touhou Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Most of the characters in Hollow Song of Birds are original and non-existent in the Touhou Project. The following four are, however, officially part of the Touhou Project and are playable characters in Hollow Song of Birds. The first midboss of stage 5 is also an official character. The rest below are the originals.

Reimu Hakurei
楽園の素敵なシャーマン
Wonderful Shaman of Paradise

Reimu Hakurei
Playable Character

Species: Human
Ability: Flying in the sky

The now familiar shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine.

Since her flow of time was stopped along with the rest of Gensokyo, if she hadn't been released by Sakuya Izayoi's ability, it would've been game over before things even began this time.
What greater humiliation could there be for Reimu, who prides herself on being Gensokyo's incident-solver?
With nowhere to direct her rage, she won't lose any shot power even if she gets hit by enemy bullets.
(Well, we haven't had shot power implemented since TLC in the first place. But whatevs!)

Marisa Kirisame
極めて普通のマジシャン
Extremely Ordinary Magician

Marisa Kirisame
Playable Character

Species: Human
Ability: Using magic

An ordinary magician living in Gensokyo. She also has a mania for collecting things.

Sakuya didn't initially plan to unfreeze her time.
But then...! Alongside Reimu, frozen while standing in brave defiance of this unknown menace's power, there was Marisa! ...Who was frozen while teary-eyed and reaching out for help. You'd want to unfreeze the heck outta her too, wouldn't you?? Gradually.
Thus rescued, it's now her time to shine(?) as the practical embodiment of curiosity and dedication.

Sakuya Izayoi
帰って来た吸血鬼のメイド
Returning Maid of the Vampire

Sakuya Izayoi
Playable Character

Species: Human
Ability: Manipulating time

The Scarlet Devil Mansion's human chief maid.
She's not actually a demon or immortal, though she gets mistaken for one a lot.

The whole land had been set upon by a massive time freeze! With everything instantly rendered powerless, it was sure to be the toughest incident anyone had ever seen... but Gensokyo had Sakuya, a time manipulator, on its side!
Having avoided being frozen thanks to her ability, she went out to unfreeze Gensokyo's incident resolution specialist, Reimu (and also Marisa). The three top powers had joined forces once again, at last.
Also, after deciding that they'd have a bad affinity with the latest mastermind, she left the Scarlet Devil Mansion's similarly-frozen residents where they were.

Kaguya Houraisan
永遠と刹那のプリンセス
Princess of the Eternal and Instantaneous

Kaguya Houraisan
Playable Character (unlockable)

種族:月人

能力:永遠と須臾を操る程度の能力

全ての変化を拒絶し、常人には認識不能の一瞬を自在に操る能力の前には時間停止も怖くない!
姫様も異変解決がしてみたいので、隠し自機として堂々参戦!

Species: Lunarian
Ability: Manipulating eternity and the instantaneous

In the face of the ability to reject all change and freely manipulate instants that regular people can't perceive, frozen time is no problem at all!
It looks like this princess has got a hankering for some incident resolution, so she's here to join the battle as a secret unlockable player!

スカーレットランラン

Ranran Higami (緋神 乱々) is the stage 1 midboss and boss.

Concept[edit]

Ranran is based on the hihi, a type of mountain-dwelling monkey youkai said to eat human flesh and laugh with a high-pitched "hihi" sound. Clothes dyed red with a hihi's blood are said to never fade. Accounts of capturing a hihi exist in Echigo and Izu Provinces (now Niigata and part of Shizuoka Prefecture, respectively).

Real-life baboons are also called "hihi" in Japanese, albeit in katakana (ヒヒ).

Name

Her surname is composed of the kanji hi (), meaning "scarlet," and kami (), meaning "god." Her given name is composed of the kanji ran (), meaning "disorder" or "confusion," and the iteration mark "々", which indicates that the preceding kanji should be repeated.

ちいちい墓場へご招待!

Chii Shirobakama (白袴 ちい) is the stage 2 midboss and boss.

Concept[edit]

Chii is based on the folk tale Chii-chii bakama/Chii-chii kobakama ("The Teeny Tiny Hakamas") from the island of Sado in Niigata Prefecture. In it, an old woman is continually bothered at night by a pack of tiny hakama-wearing men, which are implied to be the spirits of the many toothpicks she'd carelessly discarded under the floor.

Name

Her surname is composed of the kanji shiro (), meaning "white," and hakama (). Her given name is derived from the childish phrase chii-chii (ちいちい), meaning "tiny."

Abilities

Music Themes

気高き翠の灰被姫 (シンデレラ)

Hikariko Aosagi (青鷺 ひかり子) is the stage 3 midboss and boss.

Concept[edit]

Hikariko is based on the aosagibi (lit. "blue heron fire"), a youkai that takes the form of a heron made of ghostly blue flame, as well as the social networking service Twitter. Legends of the aosagibi exist in various parts of Japan, including the island of Sado in Niigata Prefecture.

Her character is a pastiche of antisocial Twitter users, otaku and chuunibyou. As well as being related to her nature as a youkai of will-o'-wisps, her swamp motif may also be drawn from use of the word doronuma (泥沼 lit. "bog," "quagmire" etc.) to refer to situations, interests or communities-- particularly internet communities-- that are hard to get oneself out of.

Her connection to swamps may also be partly related to the Buddhist temple Shinju-in (真珠院 lit. "Pearl hall") in Izu Province (now part of Shizuoka Prefecture). Associated with the temple is a historical tale of Yaehime (八重姫), who threw herself into the Shinjugafuchi pond (真珠ヶ淵) following a tragic romance with Minamoto no Yoritomo.

Name

Her surname is composed of the kanji ao (), meaning "blue," and sagi (), meaning "heron." Her given name is composed of the word "hikari" (meaning "light") written in hiragana, and ko (), meaning "child."

Her name is also partly inspired by the fan character Hikaruko Hasunuma (蓮沼ひかる子), a humanoid version of one of the giant toads in the Giant Toad's Pond.[2] She and other obscure fan characters made appearances in an early video series by Milka Oyasu, the writer for HSoB.

Concept[edit]

<add here>

Name

Her full name is Horou Torisumi (鳥澄 珠烏). 珠烏 (Horou) is composed with the characters 珠 ("gem"; part of Hollow Song of Birds' Japanese title, 真島), and 烏 ("raven", in its go-on reading). Her given name's pronunciation also is similar to that of Horus, the Egyptian god of the sun who is associated with the imagery of birds, as well as the word "Hollow", as in the game's title.

鳥澄 (Torisumi) uses the characters 鳥 ("bird") and 澄 (read as "pure", but using the kun pronunciation of 墨, "black ink").

Additionally, "Torisumi" is the name of a neighborhood in Midori-ku, Nagoya, and is similar to the kana transliteration of Hermes Trismegistus (ヘルメス・トリスメギストス, Herumesu Torisumegisutosu), an enigmatic Ancient Greek alchemist whose identity is usually conflated with Thoth, the Egyptian god of wisdom who is associated with ibises.

Name

Her full name is Mumei Fujitsubo (藤壺 無名異). "無名異" (Mumei) is taken from Mumyoui pottery (無名異焼き), a type of pottery traditionally from Sado, Niigata. The kanji used literally mean "nameless" and "strange/different".

"藤壺" (Fujitsubo) literally means "wisteria jar" and is taken from the name of Lady Fujitsubo (as well as the title of Chapter 1) in The Tale of Genji.
