Notes[edit]

  1. A pun on the nembutsu prayer used by Shinran, the founder of the Joudou Shinshuu sect of Buddhism. The original prayer is 南無不可思議光如来 ("I take refuge in the Tathagata of inconceivable light"); the kanji for 'light' (光) and 'Tathagata' (如来) have been switched around.
  2. A pun on the nembutsu prayer used by Rennyo, the restorer of the Joudou Shinshuu sect of Buddhism. The original prayer is 帰命尽十方無碍光如来 ("I take refuge in the Tathagata of unobstructed light suffusing the Ten Directions"); the kanji for 'light' (光) and 'Tathagata' (如来) have been switched around.
  3. 翔来 (shorai): potentially a pun on 将来 ("future"), 招来 ("invite") or 請来 ("imported", specifically in the sense of Buddhist texts brought from foreign lands). All three are likewise pronounced shorai; the first kanji has been replaced with 翔, meaning 'to soar'.
  4. 仏法僧 (buppousou) literally means "Buddha, Dharma and Sangha", the 'Three Jewels' of Buddhism. It is also the Japanese name of the Oriental dollarbird, named for how its cries were said to sound similar to "bu-pou-sou".
  5. Despite the dollarbird's Japanese name, the "bu-pou-sou" cries once attributed to it have since been discovered to actually be the cries of the Eurasian scops owl.
  6. 6.0 6.1 無断転サエ (mudan tensae): a pun on 無断転載 (mudan tensai / "unauthorized reproduction") and サエズッター (Saezuttaa / "Chirper"); the implication being that Shiran is plagiarizing her fellow Chirper users' spellcards.
  7. An additional pun: 無断転早苗 (Mudan tensanae) reads out similarly to 無断転サエ (Mudan tensae).
  8. 魔改造 (makaizou, lit. "demon modification"): a Japanese term for the practice of making extreme (often bizarre) physical modifications to existing toys, figurines, graphical material and so on.
  9. A reference to the Studio Ghibli film Castle in the Sky, where the protagonists Pazu and Sheeta recite the spell to destroy Muska's castle.
  10. 禁詞 (kinshi); a pun on the word 禁止 (kinshi, forbidden).
  11. A reference to the Japanese Ghibli fanbase's tradition to shout or Tweet the phrase "Balse!" at the same time as the protagonists do so during the film's climax. The "Balse Festival" part refers to one such incident during a midnight airing of the film in 2013, which broke the record for most Tweets posted in one single second.
  12. The name also may come from "ヤマザキ春のパンまつり"(Yamazaki Spring Bread Festival), which held by Japanese bread-baking corporation Yamazaki every spring.
  13. Reference to the concept of tanriki hongan (他力本願, lit. "vow of external power") in Joudou Shinshuu Buddhism. In its original Buddhist context, the phrase refers to reaching enlightenment via the power of Amitabha's vow to save any and all beings. However, the phrase is also more colloquially used to refer to 'expecting salvation from others while putting in no work of one's own' (which, ironically, is a closer match for Shiran's character).
