Notes

  1. ↑ Wasabi or "spiciness" is metal in Wu Xing. Reimu's head is "spring" and she is "east," which are wood. The Hakurei Shrine is on the eastern extremity of Gensokyo. Metal overcomes wood (metal is strong against wood).
  2. ↑ Eel is of day of the ox in midsummer (土用の丑の日) and is therefore earth. Marisa is "black" and lives in the place where sun (yang) does not shine, has the surname "Kirisame," which are water. Earth overcomes water (earth is strong against water).
  3. ↑ "Bitter" taste is fire. Sakuya's knives are metal. Fire overcomes metal (fire is strong against metal).
  4. ↑ "Spicy" taste is metal. Color (or sense of sight) is wood. Alice is the seven-colored magician. Metal overcomes wood (metal is strong against wood).
  5. ↑ "Bitter" taste is fire. Swords are metal. Sakuya also uses metal knives. Fire overcomes metal (fire is strong against metal).
  6. ↑ "Sour" taste is wood. The border of seasons is earth. Wood overcomes earth (wood is strong against earth).
