Danmaku is one of the very little paradises left for programmers

ZUN (Programmer personality)

Have you ever though whose work a game is?

To say of that I do not mean of it to be the company’s property, the copywriter’s property,
nor do I want to say something like “a game is everybody’s property.” I do not mean the game as a entire thing.
If you looked at a game as a piece of work, then whose world is the world that’s expressed in the game, or what kind of
relation is the person in with the game, and what it means to make that apparent - that's what I am saying.

Say for example there was a picture here. The picture has on it the artist’s name. At once viewers will know that the picture
belongs to the artist.

But a picture is not always made by a single artist. There may be professional craftsmen who make the various paints and
utilities the artist uses. Maybe that certain picture was only possible because it used a certain paint that a certain
craftsmen made. Also, it may have been something that was inspired by another work of art, or maybe it was some expression
that was born from the historical background of the time. Something that happens more often these days is the possibility
that the picture was colored by a different person.
Even then, a picture belongs to that artist. No matter how the picture may move around, it’s obvious that the name of the
artist is constantly going to tag along with it. It won’t belong to the craftsmen, everyone, the current owner, or to the
gallery that shows it.

A movie is the same. A movie requires sponsors, actors, sound directors, stage crew, everything. They may be making the movie
but not creating it. A movie belongs to the director.

Without even needing to say it, a work of imagination is the world, thought, philosophy, and experience of the one who created
it. Even if placed in a different environment, as long as there is a creator, the creator shall make art. Even if there were
useful tools, skillful craftsmen, and actors with exceedingly good acting, without a creator nothing gets made. The border of
creation is in between the bare minimum and enough. Thus that is the border that exists in between the maker and the craftsmen.

Until this is the basics that everyone will know. But there are many works out there that have a vague border. A game is
especially so because it involves many works of imagination as well as there being a very vague border between the creator
and the craftsmen.

Mainly a game creation involves things as: a program (system), pictures, music, and scenarios...This is sort of thinking is
wrong. It may seem this way for those who have not had experience of making games, but these aspects are only tools and not
game creation itself.
Then what the game is actually made of is by game design. Everything else such as the program (system), pictures, music,
and scenarios exist as tools to best express the game design. A tool cannot become a game. It’s required, but not enough.
On the other hand, if there was only to be a game design can this become a game? Without saying too much, there is a
possibility it can. It probably won’t even choose between genres or platforms, one can use the most appropriate “tools” given
at the time to express it. This can be said as enough.

Whether it be programmers, artist, music directors or scenario writers, they are the craftsmen making the tools and not the
creator. A creator must think only of how one can express the world, thoughts, philosophy, and experience through the
technology that they are given. At the same time, that creator must not stress on pushing his selfish world on others. When
that happens, the game will lose a body and the creation will start losing a target. A craftsman is a back worker, and a tool.

But yet, here stands the persona of the programmer that will not give up on creating games (which is a very big nuisance). Of
course this refers to me.

There are people like me who “wants to feel that they themselves are making the game”, or who is thinking that “they are the
creators of the game”. Such people will often cast objection to the creator.

They will emphasize their views on the game and by getting the creator to approve of it, they are “joining in” on the game
production. But the more excellent(*) a creator is the less chance one will have at joining in on the game creation. The act of
doing things exactly as one is told may increase the quality of the game but at the same time leads to a great decrease in
motivation.

The programmer will notice this crisis and feel that “we won’t know until we try” and with that instantaneous idea and
activeness will actually create things. By doing so, they can successfully trick the creator (persona) and make the creative
part of the game themselves. The programmer may overtake the best part in the game production which is the creation, and if all
goes well they may even think of taking over the game.

Truthfully speaking, STGs (Especially if it involves danmaku) have many places where that thought of “won’t know till you try”
(which are very instantaneous thoughts) can take over. The unexpected effect that the many bullets and items can bring, the
chaos that no ordinary human can calculate, the symbolic and abstract gamelyness, an ecstasy that cannot be expressed through
words... In other words, I think a danmaku STG is a type of game where the programmer can take over the creation part quite
easily.

I began to think how creators of doujin materials would have fun without enjoying the making of doujin, thus we programmers
will reach for the drug called creation by running for STGs. Maybe the artistic part in the programmer feels that even within
the mature design there’s something that they can express. A doujin danmaku game is not only a game for the users (especially
shooters), but a game which expresses the world that the programmer has, thus I believe that a programmer can create “a
creation, a game that belongs to the programmer”.

A game belongs to the game creator (Game designer).
But danmakus are different.
Danmakus are one of the little remaining paradises for programmers.
The last paradise.

-I won’t let Touhou to be taken by the creator persona so easily!

...
...
...

As hardware restrictions disappear for games, new technology for games starts to decrease a bit by bit.
An age where superior technology was called the new expression is now over.
Whether it be a realistic 3D space or a model that moves realistically, nobody will see that as creation.
A charm as a piece of work is needed rather than superior technology or skilled craftsmanship.

The craftsmen persona does not understand that. What was said shall be made as it was told.
If the selfishness of the craftsmen personas started to butt into my world, the game will start to pull apart.
Touhou will eventually escape out of the grasps of my craftsmen persona and at some point in time, become mine.
Game creation is the creator’s expression and not the craftsmen’s stage to boast his skills.
Touhou too is my belonging as a creator and expression.

But recently, my programmer persona started to complain about my games again.
If one wants to make a good game they should just let me handle everything, or do they not understand that?
The programmer disregards what I say and uses his past experiences to assert himself.
It calls itself as a well thought-out being, but that’s just ridiculous.
That’s only since it has a hard head. So hard that it doesn’t notice that cold steel can only become weights.

But it’s also true that I’ve created Touhou with the programmer persona...
I guess I can let him dream in Imperishable Night.
A dream of the past when the programmers used to create games.

Danmakus are...Touhou is, always the land of dreams.
There is nothing wrong with showing dreams.

*1 Another term for selfish and perfectionist

 ---------

Well now, we shouldn’t care about the programmer’s nonsense, it’s time to get into the real thing.
You’ll be surprised if you’re fooled by the title and read this as a column of sorts. (Laughs)

Imperishable Night seems a bit different but, it’s the same Touhou as always. You probably want to say, "Two people attacking
the enemy is no fair!" but if you look closely, they aren’t attacking two at once. They’re always attacking one on one. (Were
the Prismrivers no fair like that? (Laughs))

Even if one person loses, both will draw back. Yup, they’re following rules.

That might be where the girls are still playing. By the way, it’s possible to play as only one character like the previous
games, but as a trial version, you can’t do that yet. The system’s also a bit different from normal so you can play it in a
different style. But they don’t have a special story for it. Even I can’t manage 4+8=12 characters' worth of stories.

The difficulty is in a strange spot and if you make a mistake in choosing the human and youkai, the difficulty will get a bit
higher. Basically, it’s made so that it would be easier to destroy the familiars using the human, but there are opposite cases
so you can try that stuff out.

Anyways, the existence of a trial version is really helpful ^^; Well I don’t mean to fiddle with things reading the feedback
from people, but I want people to get used to the new system on the trial version so that they won’t be starting at 0 when they
start the actual thing, but rather starting at full power. (Cruelty… ^^;)
It’s also really tedious to make tutorials like in consumer games.

But don’t you think this is a style that’s unique for a PC game?
For Touhou, I’m letting people play for a long run on the trial versions (About 1/3 of the entire thing?) It’s whether one will
see this as being cheap or being magnanimous, or just mean...
Yeah, it’s really mean isn’t it (Laughs) Like saying and here are the commercials just when you’re getting to the good part.

But if it's only three stages, it really lacks in tension. The consumer games (especially arcade games) have a really flamboyant
stage at around the first or second stage and plans on catching the consumer’s eyes, but Touhou is really plain around the
beginning, really.

At the end of the day, the Touhou stages are about the bosses, so if you want to make it flashy you need to have a strong boss
to balance it out. But story-wise, there are no strong enemies at the beginning. Thus the starting stages are only preparation
for the later stages. In Perfect Cherry Blossom, the presentation really changed from the 4th stage onwards. Imperishable
Night’s climatic build up is also really good, at least in my head.

Well, just think it better than something having a head of a dragon but a tail of a snake and try not to look too much at the
beginning of the game. ^^;
(There’s something really sad about games that only have good openings, introductions or first stages. It’s worse if the game’s
not even finished…)
______________________

Drinking with a person that can see illusions

This time, by changing between human and youkai, the enemies change. This type of system existed from a while back but it was
hard to make use of these systems. The STGs that got around often make good use of these systems and that’s where you know that
these people are really pros.

Those people with good instincts might have already noticed by Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, and Perfect Cherry Blossom, but in
both games I snuck in keywords about human and youkai teams. I wanted to make a game with a two manned team of human and
youkai, but if I suddenly introduced new characters people won’t like them. So I made games where they appear as enemy
characters, and thus the three game long plan… it’s really a mind long story.

It was quite easy to think of the partner youkai for Sakuya and Youmu but it was hard to make partners for Reimu and Marisa.
Alice who was called the youkai version of Marisa was placed for this purpose, but maybe people found it awkward when she
suddenly came out in Perfect Cherry Blossom. Also by making Yukari’s ability overlap Reimu’s ability and by making her
personality extraordinary, I tried to make her balance Reimu. That’s why she’s so suspicious-sounding.

For the system, I thought it would be troublesome if people who played the past games couldn’t get used to it, so after many
trial and errors I settled down with the character change between normal movement and focused movement. The feeling is not that
different from Perfect Cherry Blossom, is it? The shots were different in Perfect Cherry Blossom too. Well, it’s only me
thinking that if I put restrictions on it, or toggle switches I thought people wouldn’t like it. ^^;
(I could get a toggle option in there, but would you really need it?)

During all that, what makes Imperishable Night so special is that its system didn’t come first. First I’ll say that I’d want to
make a certain type of system, and use that as a reason after its done. Thus I’m not pushing the reason on why the system was
made on to the world. This is because if I do that, I know the game is going to be like walking a tightrope.

The point about Imperishable Night is that there are humans, youkai and familiars (illusions). While the human is distracted by
the familiar and can’t attack the enemy, the youkai watches that and says, “Well, you’re only a human.” While the human sees
the youkai and thinks that they only see things in a simple manner. Since the Youkai are beings that cover everything in mist
just because they hate sunlight, or collect all the spring just because they want to see the cherry blossoms bloom. Of course they
won’t look at the illusion that shoots out bullets, but aim for the enemy directly even if they need to dodge a few extra
bullets. (Laughs)

The system aspect of character changing is both meaningful in the game aspect and the setting aspect, and by that both of them
bring out the fun as an entire thing. This is the ideal I have for games. There being no need to separate the system from the
setting, but rather those two being inseparable.
(That kind of thinking is the type of thinking that the programmer persona doesn’t have (Laughs))

By the way, you can think of the Familiar system to be like the turrets that a big boss has. The turrets are quite mobile too,
and the weakness of the boss is not the turrets but the boss itself. I guess the only thing that’s not like the usual type of
shooters is that you get more points if you don’t destroy the turrets.

Maybe the points in this game are points for the art. (Laughs)

Oh, of course there are certain familiars that have their own will.

 ---------

Ah the sad bosses at the beginning.

Since the player characters are of the Last Boss class (But Reimu and the gang are stronger than that last boss class) the
enemies' abilities are quite strong from the start. I think.

Although the first boss is only there to get beat up, and sadly nobody pays attention to it in the conversation skits... But
even as a boss around the beginning, its stats are higher than the other beginning bosses. Although it’s a bug that only comes
to get beat up.

Anyways, I guess the first stage boss’s bullets are small bugs. It’s a wonderful sight if you try to imagine it.

 ---------

The self-restraint in games and floating points.

I need to be careful since Touhou has lots of expressions that could be ethically wrong. But don’t you think games these days
have too much self-restraint?

By just stating restraint, people will think of sexual scenes or violence in the game, but most times those are meaningless and
excessive expressions that only exist to pull people’s attention to it. Those should be restrained by in a fair manner, but
it’s those kinds of people that use excessive expression to pull the audience towards them that state of “freedom of
expression”, can’t they do something about that?

This may not be related to what was mentioned, but recently there have been an increasing number of things that put restraint
on those kinds of things. But most of these restraints aren’t because they really feel that what they have is ethically
incorrect, but rather to protect themselves. If they’re going to get sued for those materials, the companies will censor those
materials out to begin with. As they say, the wise man never courts danger. Although this may be good for a producer, it’s a
failure as a person expressing something. Well, I’m not trying to say that the expresser is not a wise man, but....

There may be certain instances as; rubbing out the manji mark (卍) since it resembles a swastika, which they probably did
thinking about sales overseas. But this manji mark is used as a map symbol in Japan and can be found relatively anywhere.
Touhou also has youkai that eat humans, but these youkai look like nothing but humans, which is dangerous since it could make
one think of cannibalism. When it gets to attacks like the spinning manji mark, it could look like a swastika when it slants.
In the first place, expressions like bird-eyed, may not be so good.

For those reasons, I guess that Touhou is not something that is playable overseas. There isn’t an explanation about what’s
different from a Phantom and a Ghost, so I’m guessing not much people will know the difference between
them (It’s probably a tough one even for Japanese people). In the first place people don’t know Saigyou Houshi. It’s also hard
to understand why Phantoms are such a cheerful lot. When it gets to Imperishable Night, what the characters are saying may be
hardly understandable. There are too many vague ideas that are not explained in the game.

By removing scenarios which require difficult explanations as censorship, one can spread the stage of expressions to the
whole world. There may also be things that one must explain one at a time. Or on the other hand, one may want to stay in the
world of doujins so that they have the place to express things in a very deep manner. By putting things into words, one may
lose the expression, and by not doing so one can maintain ambiguities of the ideas that they want to express. Although either
of these things may be a matter of course.

In terms of precision, a floating point can express astronomical numbers like one hundred trillion, or miniscule amounts like
one over one hundred trillion. Yet, it can’t process expressions like 100trillion + one 100trillionth.
Although it may have a great difference in capacity if you compare it to integers, it can only express the same amount as
integers at the same time.

At the end of the day, a computer game is a bunch of numbers. I don’t know if that’s related or not, but I feel that the game
may be similar to numbers.
Whether to see the game as a float, or an integer may also be the value in the person expressing it.

It has become an oddly long afterword. There really is no meaning to this, it’s only rubbish.
In a sense, this is the only place where I can show my egos. (Laughs)

Well then, I’ll see you again at the finished version of Imperishable Night.
Until then, you must not let the night break.

2. An easy character explanation.

This is an easy synopsis of the characters that appear in the trial version.
A proper one will be done in the finished version.

Wriggle Nightbug

First stage boss. Youkai firefly.
Has the ability to control bugs.

There are ones that have poison in the insect family.
If she controlled a bunch of mites, humans can’t to a thing. Maybe she’s strong after all.

Mystia Lorelei
Second stage boss. Night sparrow.
Has the ability to craze people with her songs.

Humans only hear her cries and her actual identity is unknown.
From those cries people call her a sparrow, but in reality they don’t know if it’s true or not.
Humans are scared of her since they don’t know how she looks, but it’s unknown of how they’ll think of her after they know how
she looks.

By turning people bird-eyed (a disease that results in severe loss of sight in the dark) she hides her self.

Kamishirasawa Keine

Third stage boss. Half beast half human.
She has the ability to eat (conceal) history, and to create history.

The former is her ability when she is a human, and the latter is her ability when she is a beast.
Her normal appearance is a human, but she is a were-hakutaku. During the night of full moon she becomes a Hakutaku, a beast
that is said to have all sorts of wisdom.
She seems to be uneasy since there haven’t been any full moons recently.

She constantly sides with the humans and protects Gensokyo from the youkai.
There isn’t a thing in Gensokyo history that she wouldn’t know about.

 出てくるだろうなぁと思ったまでなんですが^^;
