1F: The Root of Gensokyo's Great Tree

Overview

The first floor of the Great Tree is there to ease you into the game. You'll only have the first four characters to begin with; put Keine and Rinnosuke in your left slots so they can put their higher durability to use. Get used to the game and explore everywhere - check every event tile and find all the treasure and character events.

  • Your first priority should be to head to the southwestern part of the maze and recruit Momiji, who will serve as your first real tank. Simply walk onto the event tile and she'll join you without any fuss.
  • Kogasa can be found near the bottom right of the floor, but won't join you yet. After talking to her, the Malignut Eater (see below) will appear at the western part of this floor. Defeat it and you'll receive a broken umbrella. Return to Gensokyo and visit Nitori's Workshop to get it fixed. Nitori will then ask for Insect Exoskeleton, Great Tree's Leaf and 120 Money to fix it. Those materials can be found on this floor's random encounters and chests. After you get it fixed, return to Kogasa and she'll join your party.
  • It is recommended that you keep at least 3 Great Tree's Leaf in your inventory until you recruit Minoriko (required to beat the game). Otherwise, you will have to waste time farming them.
  • Your last obstacle is a pillar of ice in the northeast area. First, you have to talk to Youmu at directly north from where you start. Then, an event with Cirno will appear at the north. Triggering that event and return to Youmu, whose icon is changed to a Boss Icon. Defeat and recruit her then go the pillar of ice and she will break it, allowing you move to the next floor.
  • Other than that, Rumia can be found at the western part of map. After that, she will move to the end of the crooked path at a little to the north. She will join you, if you have 3 Manga Meat in inventory. They are found in chests and in shop for 240 Money (HP Recovery +3), and will disappear on joining.
  • The first event with the Scarlet Mansion residents can be found at the northwest area. Trigger it and they can be found again to Floor 4. This is one of the events needed to trigger to recruit Meiling.
  • Aya can be found at directly southern part of the map. Trigger the event and she will then move to Floor 2.
  • An event with Chen and boss fight can be found at the Northeast side of the floor. This "Boss" fight is one of 3 fights needed before Chen can be recruited.
  • Parsee (lower right part) will join you if you have 12 characters (including those who aren't in the party) while talking to her.
  • There are 3 chests in the lower left corner, which are locked and requires keys to be opened. Keys can be obtained via achievements and chests. (From top to bottom, the chests contain a set of +36% sub-equipment, a set of reward increasing items, and a few gems respectively.)
  • After coming down from Floor 2 in the lower left corner, an event with Mystia is reachable. She will be recruitable once you defeat the FOE on 4F.

Enemies

  • The enemies on this floor are as weak as you'd expect, although still powerful enough to dent your party before they have a level or two behind them.

Your first boss fight is with...an umbrella-wielding squirrel. The Malignut Eater isn't really all that dangerous; while it's a good bit faster than your party is likely to be at this point, its physical attacks aren't much stronger than its common brethren on this floor. It can, however, summon four regular Nuts Eaters, which it will do its first turn and randomly thereafter. It will immediately use a spell that gives the lackeys a full timebar, although the worst they're likely to do is Shock your teammates unless you get unlucky and they all focus Reimu or Marisa. There aren't any special tricks to this fight - use Keine and Rinnosuke to buff your team, toss some healing if you need it, and have Marisa and Momiji beat it down with their powerful attacks.

Despite being marked on the map as a boss battle, this is just a group of five regular foes you'll likely have run into plenty of times by now. Your multiple-target attackers shouldn't have any trouble wiping them all out in one or two attacks.

No more warm-up bosses - this fight is for real. Youmu attacks primarily with powerful physical strikes that will put a dent in even your bulkier party members. During the first phase, she attacks you with PHY-elemental single-target attacks: her faster but weaker normal Attack, and the stronger but slower Present Life Slash. After Youmu's HP is down to 80%, she will use Slash Clearing the Six Senses, an all-target Nature that'll deal 60-80 damage to your whole party and she will add that attack to her arsenal once she goes below 60% HP. Make sure you keep everyone topped off and don't be afraid to spam Reimu's and Keine's defensive buffs. Her biggest threat is God's Slash of Karma Wind, which will deal triple digit damage to your entire party; however, this attack only activates at the 60% and 20% HP thresholds and she'll have to spend a turn Concentrating before casting it, which will drain her timebar down to 0, so you need to do as much preparation as you can before she attacks. Youmu is vulnerable to Dark and Mystic in particular, which makes Marisa, Rumia and Kogasa strong in this fight - Kogasa can even inflict a Mind debuff with her A Rainy Night's Ghost Story spell.

After being defeated, Youmu will join your party.
