8F: The Evergreen Tropics Filled with Illuding Shadows

Overview

The floor actually has a kind of gimmick this time. It contains a bunch of one way passages thanks to the arrow tiles. There's nothing too complicated, though going to the wrong arrow tile and jumping onto a segment of the floor with a nearby FOE you're not prepared for is no fun.

  • The Violet Ada-bana FOE is roaming around due South of the floor entrance. Like the Giant Tree on floor 7 it'd probably be better to take it on once the rest of floor 8 has been explored. You can and should navigate around the FOE for the Stone of Awakening in the Southern portion of its area.
  • There's a relay point directly South of where you'd find the FOE and Iku which is blocking your path to the rest of the floor.
  • The 5th Chen event towards Ran's recruitment is also directly South of the FOE.
  • There's an event just a bit northwest of where the FOE is involving Suwako; which you can trigger without fighting the FOE by using a one-way passage. After this event, another one will appear a bit east from the staircase from 7F (though you have to loop around a bit to reach it). Sanae is in this event, and you can now recruit her by giving her three Symbols of Faith. After recruiting her, both Kanako and Suwako will appear on 10F.
  • At the northwestern part of the floor, you can find an item "Magician's Proof", allowing your characters to take on Magician subclass.
  • Two events which involve Reimu, Marisa and Youmu also appear on this floor. The first one can be found at a little bit to the southeast and the second one can also be found near the first one at the southeastern part.
  • There is a bush blocking Iku and the second half of 8F. Before you can fight Iku, you must make your way to the upper-right area of 8F and find another stairway to 7F. In this new area of 7F, an event involving Minoriko to clear the way to Iku can be found at the southeastern part.
  • At the second half of Floor 8 to the east an event with Minoriko and Utsuho. Minoriko must have at least 200 BP and Utsuho must have at least 120 BP to complete it. This will clear one of the bushes blocking your way to the optional boss on 8F.

Enemies

  • Daphnids Pack is a rare monster on this floor. It can be encountered on the passage south of the room you encounter the F.O.E.

Ada-bana has access to Green Arrow and Storm of Wood Leaves (single and multi-target Nature spell respectively), Wild Dance of Freezing Mist (its strongest multi-target spell, which is Cold-elemental), Paralysis Spore, (multi-target Wind spell that can paralyze), Ancient Curse (multi-target Dark spell that can inflict Poison, Paralysis, Heavy and Shock, which can be devastating) and Flux of Yomotsu Hirasaka (Dark spell which has a high chance to inflict Death to your entire party). Getting sufficient status resistance as well as decent elemental affinities will make this fight much more manageable. It heavily resists all status effects with the exception of Paralysis and Debuffs, which are moderately resisted instead. It also heavily resists Cold, Nature and Dark but is weak to Fire and Wind, so bring Alice and Aya. There's no real tricks to beating it other than staying buffed up. You can attempt to debuff it to make the fight easier on yourself but they may not always land.

Iku uses almost exclusively WND-elemental spells, some of which can cause Paralysis. She mostly uses Elekiter Dragon Palace (single target WND spell that can cause PAR and a DEF debuff, targets randomly), but can also use Paralyzing Fog, Razor Wind (only when she goes below 50% HP), Storm of Yellow Drive; her only non-WND attack is Green Curse, which debuffs your frontline's Mind, making her spells even stronger. Except for Razor Wind (which targets both DEF and MND), all of Iku's attacks scale with her Magic and target Mind, so make sure to have high Mind or Wind affinity on your characters. Aya does quite well here if you pump her HP and Wind affinity, as she can further reduce wind damage by 30% for the whole front line. Iku has high Mind and heavily resists Wind (no surprise there) and Spirit, but she's weak to Nature, so Kaguya can still output damage with her Swallow's Cowrie Shell, and Kasen and Yuugi make great Nature attackers. She completely resists Terror and Paralysis and moderately resists everything else except Poison and Silence so bring Wriggle and/or Mystia as well. Inflicting Silence and MAG/SPD debuffs on Iku will make her second phase much easier to deal with.

Iku has three phases to her fight. The first phase is nothing special, just Iku using the attacks mentioned before. This first phase of the fight should be spent buffing up your party's defenses to mitigate the amount of damage Iku can deal to you. Once you are fully buffed in defenses, start buffing Marisa's or any other nukers' offenses to be ready for the second phase of the fight. Once they are well buffed up, carefully bring Iku close to the 55% HP threshold before going nuts with poisoning her. The second phase of the fight will begin once Iku buffs up her Attack and Magic by 100% with Thundercloud Stickleback. On the next turn, she will then unleash Light Dragon's Sigh, a devastating multi-target Wind spell with high accuracy and a chance to debuff Defense and Paralyze, which will likely only leave your sturdiest Mind tanks or Komachi alive (provided she has enough Wind resistance). Make sure you swap in characters you can part with before this attack hits. Once she goes below 50% HP, she'll add both Light Dragon's Sigh and Razor Wind to her arsenal. You want to rush through the second phase quickly due to the constant danger of her powerful multi-target attacks.

The last phase begins once she reaches 33% HP, she will cast Whiskers of the Dragon God to buff up her Speed to 100% at the cost debuffing her own Defense and Mind by 50%, this also lowers all her Debuff-resistances from 50 to 0. If you don't finish her off quickly, she will make short work of you with the kind of speed she now has and the likely left over Attack and Magic buffs from earlier. This is where your nukers come in of course, as those who are familiar with the first game know all too well about the manic phase of bosses. Alternatively, you can switch in your debuffers to lower Iku's buffs quickly and make her attacks much more manageable.

The fight with Yuuka is quite similar to the fight in the first game. The main gimmick here is that Yuuka will use Gensokyo's Reflowering every 3 turns, which will heal her as well as do a fair bit of Nature damage to the whole party (note that due to a bug with Yuuka's AI, she will very rarely skip turns, which can cause Reflowering to be used before 3 turns have passed). The heal this time is not as ridiculous as the first game, only 10% of her max HP (around 25445). On the turns where she isn't using Reflowering, if she is inflicted with any ailments when she takes a turn, Yuuka will always cast Beauty of Nature, a powerful but high delay multi-target Nature (Wind in Plus Disk) spell that also increases the duration of any ailments present on your party members. To take advantage of Beauty of Nature, Yuuka can use Poison Spore and Paralysis Spore (which inflict PSN and PAR respectively). Otherwise, she will mostly use Flower Shot for a decently strong and low delay single target Nature spell. Her other attacks include Storm of Wood Leaves, Piercing Light, Calming Scent (buffs all her stats with no delay), and Deranging Aroma (debuffs all your frontliners' stats at no delay). You'll want Nature and some Mystic affinity to deal with her attacks; some Poison, Paralysis and Debuff resistance would also be helpful to have.

Yuuka has low Defense, high Mind and is heavily resistant to Nature and Mystic, but is weak to Fire and very weak to Cold, making Alice and Nitori great damage dealers in this fight. She's heavily resistant to all status ailments except Shock, which she's neutral to and Heavy which she's weak to; she's also highly resistant to ATK/MAG debuffs, and moderately resistant to other debuffs. This adds to the fact that Alice is a great character to bring to the fight, and Yuugi might be worth bringing as well. However, you have to be prepared for Beauty of Nature if you choose to do so. Bringing someone who can inflict Shock is also highly recommended for the second phase.

Once Yuuka is at the 40% HP threshold, she'll use Concentrate in preparation for using Master Spark the next turn. Also, Yuuka's Shock resistance is changed from 48 to 0 after she Concentrates, and it stays that way until the battle ends; this heavily encourages you to SHK-lock her to prevent her from firing her Master Spark before you can kill her. If you don't have anyone who can inflict Shock, you'll have to take Yuuka out as fast as possible unless you want to take a Master Spark to the face. Marisa sadly can't use her Master Spark given Yuuka's high Mystic resistance, though Nitori's Super Scope 3D and Yuugi's Knockout in Three Steps can do the trick as well. If you can somehow survive or evade the attack, Yuuka will have to Concentrate before firing another shot so this is your best opportunity to switch in your attackers and take her down before she fire offs another one.
