Momidan/Features

From Touhou Wiki

Preempt: if you run into a phrase such as Yuuka Sword, or Remilia Resonance, this refers to Spellcards being attached to items that are worn. X Sword means attached to Sword, X Shield means attached to Shield, and X Resonance means attached to both Sword and Shield. For more information, see the Items section.

Visibility

Visibility is how well things can be seen. It applies both to seeing on the playing field, and on the map. There are many components to visibility in this dungeon.

Light

Indicated by normal brightness, Light is the standard illumination which always follows Momiji as a 3x3 square around her. If Momiji enters a normal Room, then her Light will expand to fit the entire room and one space around it (all the surrounding walls and Corridors). Enemies, items, uncovered traps, and stairs are visible on the playing field.

Darkness

Indicated by darkened brightness. Any part of the dungeon which is not covered by Momiji's Light will be in Darkness. Nothing is visible in the playing field in Darkness.

Map Visibility

Every space which Momiji covers with Light will fill in the map in blue. Even if Momiji leaves the area, the map will remain filled out. Momiji is indicated by a yellow square. Items (green squares), uncovered traps (green Xs), and stairs (green square outlines) will be marked on the map if Momiji has seen the area, even if she cannot see the mark being placed (throwing items out of sight, an enemy triggers a trap in a previously visited room, etc.). Enemies will normally only be visible on the map if they are also in Light.

Well Lit

The first two dungeon floors are Well Lit. There is no traditional darkness: everything can be seen on the playing field even if in a different room or corridor. However, mapping still only occurs as normal: Momiji will only map out rooms or as a 3x3 square around her in corridors. Enemies will only be visible on the map if Momiji's Light will see them, as usual.

Dark Room

If Rumia is in a room, that room becomes a Dark Room. Visibility is the same as in Corridors: only a small area around Momiji is Light. Once all Rumia in a Dark Room are defeated, it becomes a normal Room.

Enemy Sight (Minor)

The Rumia Card on a Shield makes enemies visible on the map no matter their position. They will even be visible on parts of the map that Momiji hasn't even visited. This only occurs if Momiji is Blind, however. As a result, enemies will not be visible on the playing field. Since Blind is not easy to obtain, this visibility is not nearly as useful as in other Roguelikes.

Enemy Sight (Major)

If Momiji enters a Monster House, this effect will automatically happen. Momiji will be able to see all enemies at all times, even in darkness. They will be visible both on the map and on the playing field. This lasts until Momiji goes to the next floor, and is not restricted to the enemies in the Monster House. Indeed, all enemies on the floor, even newly generated ones, will always be visible.

Fireflies

If Momiji casts the Wriggle Spellcard, fireflies will explore the entire map. This effectively expands Momiji's Light to the entire floor. Everything is visible both on the map and on the playing field. Since it expands Momiji's visibility, it cancels all Dark Rooms.

Trap Vision (Minor)

The Tewi Card on both a Sword and Shield makes traps visible on the playing field. They are not actually uncovered, however, and will not be marked on the map until this is changed.

Trap Vision (Major)

Eating Eyedrops will, in addition to countering Blind, uncovers all traps on the floor. This also dispels Optic Camouflage.

Status Conditions

All status conditions have a visual cue unless it is inherent to an enemy (except for Restless sleep). In that case, it is not visible unless it is first cancelled, then reapplied. An inherent condition is always indicated by the phrase "[character] begins with [condition]", and always has a permanent duration.

All status status conditions on Momiji will fade away after a certain amount of time. On an enemy, a status condition can have a permanent duration, in which it will not fade away by time. It can be dispelled by any other means, however. The effects of status conditions may differ between Momiji and the enemy.

Poison

Indicated by green bubbles in the top right corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, her normal health regeneration (1% per round) is negated. There is no immunity to Poison, however the Medicine cards will improve its effects. Medicine Shield, in particular, counters the effect, while Medicine Sword increases attack power.

When an enemy has this condition, she loses 1HP every turn. Poison cannot kill an enemy. Medicine and Yukari are immune to Poison.

Lunatic

Indicated by a yellow "L5" in the top right corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, she loses normal control and instead hunts down and melees every enemy. Her behavior is the same as default enemy AI, which means she automatically senses any enemy in her current room: she will automatically locate enemies in dark rooms as well as invisible Nitori. She also cannot trigger Traps (!). Her movement is also unaffected by Confuse and Blind. Reisen Shield provides immunity to Lunatic.

When an enemy has this condition, she targets all characters, be it Momiji or another enemy. She will prioritize enemies, but once all enemies are destroyed, she will attack Momiji. While Lunatic, the enemy cannot use special abilities, but effects from attacks (such as Medicine's poison) will still occur. Just like on Momiji, Lunatic cancels the penalties of Confuse and Blind on an enemy. Yukari is immune to Lunatic. Flandre begins with Lunatic.

Seal

Indicated by a red circle with a white bar in the top right corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, she cannot use her mouth or any ability which needs Spirit Power. Stopping her mouth means she cannot Eat, while Spirit Power abilities include Shooting, using Wands, and casting Spellcards. There is no immunity to Seal.

When an enemy has this condition, she loses all of her special abilities, and can only make melee attacks. This also prevents melee abilities such as Medicine's poison. Seal is always permanent duration on enemies. Yukari is immune to Seal.

Seal counters Slow, Haste, Super Haste, and Fast Movement. On Yukari, it only can reduce her Super Haste to Haste, but not negate her Haste.

Paralyze

Indicated by a yellow zigzag in the top right corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, she is immobile and cannot act. This condition is dispelled if she takes damage. Cirno Shield provides immunity to Paralyze, however, no enemy can cause Paralyze.

When an enemy has this condition, she is immobile and cannot act. This condition is dispelled if she takes damage. Yukari is immune to Paralyze.

Confuse

Indicated by a yellow star in the top right corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, she cannot attack or move straight. When attempting to move or make a melee attack, she will act in a random direction. Movement follows the normal rules, and so attempting to move into an enemy or a wall will not advance the turn. Throwing, Shooting, and using Wands are not affected by Confuse. Confuse has no real effect if Momiji is Lunatic. There is no immunity to Confuse.

When an enemy has this condition, she will move randomly. If her movement is towards a wall, she will waste her turn. If her movement is towards Momiji or an enemy, she will make a melee attack. The enemy is restricted to only melee attacks and cannot use special abilities. Confuse has no real effect if the enemy is Lunatic. Yukari is immune to Confuse, while Flandre is only effectively immune to Confuse due to her inherent Lunatic condition.

Sleep

Indicated by a "Zzz" in the top area of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, she is immobile and cannot act. Momiji will wake up if a loud noise is heard from Lyrica's attack. Lyrica Shield provides immunity to Sleep, while Komachi Shield provides added regeneration effects.

When an enemy has this condition, she is immobile and cannot act. An enemy with this condition will wake up early if Momiji strikes with Lyrica sword, if Momiji uses the Lyrica card on the same floor, or if Lyrica makes a loud noise in the same room. Yukari is immune to Sleep.

Restless Sleep

Indicated by a "Zzz" in the top area of the character.

Momiji cannot have this condition.

When an enemy has this condition, she is immobile and cannot act. Enemies randomly will start with this status, and Komachi will enter this if she loses sight of Momiji. She has a chance to wake up if Momiji walks into or out of the room, and for every turn in which Momiji is right next to her. She will also wake up on the same conditions as normal Sleep, and automatically if struck for damage. Restless Sleep always has a permanent duration. The Rumia card will negate the chance of waking up by movement. Rumia Sword will add a chance for melee attacks to not wake up the enemy, and the Resonance Effect reduces the chance of waking up by movement. Yukari, Reimu, Yuki, and Mai begin with Restless Sleep.

Blind

Indicated by a black eyeball in the top right corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, the entire map is shrouded in darkness. This has the same effects as Darkness, except it even cancels out Momiji's normal light radius (thus, enemies are never visible). Blind has no real effect if Momiji is Lunatic. Rumia Shield gives Momiji Enemy Sight (Minor) when Blind, while Mystia Shield increases her evasion. Mystia Resonance provides immunity to Blind.

When an enemy has this condition, she loses sight. She will pick a direction, and continue to move in that direction until she hits a wall, and wastes a turn running into the wall before changing direction. If she attempts to move into Momiji or an enemy, she will make a melee attack. She will not change her behavior even if Momiji attacks her as she passes by. While Blind, enemies will not use special abilities except for melee ones such as Medicine's Poison. Blind has no real effect if the enemy is Lunatic. Yukari is immune to Blind, while Flandre is only effectively immune due to her inherent Lunatic condition.

Power Up

Indicated by a red arrow pointing up in the top right corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, her attack power is doubled, and her defense is slightly increased. There is no immunity to Power Up.

When an enemy has this condition, her attack power is doubled, and her defense is slightly increased. Mai and Yukari automatically gain this condition under certain circumstances.

Power Up counters Power Down. Power Up does not trigger Yuuka Sword.

Power Down

Indicated by a blue arrow pointing down in the top right corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, her attack power is halved and her defense is slightly reduced. There is no immunity to Power Down.

When an enemy has this condition, her attack power is halved and her defense is reduced. Yukari is immune to Power Down.

Power Down counters Power Up.

Bind

Indicated by a crosshatch of white lines all over the character.

When Momiji has this condition, she cannot move. Attempting to make otherwise legal moves will waste turns. There is no immunity to Bind.

When an enemy has this condition, she cannot move, and will stand still until she can act. Yukari is immune to Bind.

Bind does not trigger Yuuka Sword.

Slow

Indicated by a white dot on the center of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, enemies will act twice before the turn advances. Lunasa Shield provides immunity to Slow, and Medicine on either equipment provides immunity to Slow if it is caused by Suzuran.

When an enemy has this condition, she will only act every other turn (against a normal speed Momiji). Slow always has a permanent duration on enemies. Slow begins on the turn it is performed: if you inflict Slow on staggered rounds on different enemies, they will act in staggered turns. Yukari is immune to Slow. Patchouli begins with Slow.

Slow counters Haste, Super Haste, and Fast Movement. On Yukari, it can reduce her Super Haste to Haste, but not negate her Haste. Slow does not trigger Yuuka Sword.

Haste

Indicated by a white 天 in the top left corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, she can act twice before the turn advances. Lunasa Shield provides immunity to Haste.

When an enemy has this condition, she takes two actions every turn (against a normal speed Momiji). Haste always has a permanent duration on enemies. Yukari and Yuki gain Haste under special conditions, while Remilia and Aya begin with Haste.

Haste counters Slow. Haste does not trigger Yuuka Sword.

Super Haste

Indicated by a white 天 in the top left corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, she can act three times before the turn advances. If facing an opponent with Haste, this means Momiji will get two actions for the enemy's one every other action. Lunasa Shield provides immunity to Super Haste, but as of version 0.90b, it appears to be impossible to acquire this condition.

When an enemy has this condition, she takes three actions every turn (against a normal speed Momiji). Super Haste always has a permanent duration on enemies. Yukari gains Super Haste under special conditions.

Super Haste counters Slow. Super Haste does not trigger Yuuka Sword.

Fast Movement

No visual indication, as it is only an inherent condition.

Momiji cannot have this condition.

When an enemy has this condition, she gets one free move action every turn. Thus, she can move two spaces, move then attack, or just attack. Enemy AI prevents enemies from abusing this, as once they engage in melee, they will not move away. Chen, Marisa, and Shanghai Doll begin with Fast Movement.

Fast Movement does not trigger Yuuka Sword.

Curse of Eternity

Indicated by a purple 永 in the top right corner of the character.

When Momiji has this condition, all other status conditions will last twice as long when she receives them. This appears to have no effect if Momiji had the condition before getting Curse of Eternity. There is no immunity to Curse of Eternity.

When an enemy has this condition, all other status conditions will last twice as long when she receives them. Yukari is probably immune to Curse of Eternity.

Puppet

Indicated by a purple eyeball in the top right corner of the character.

Momiji cannot have this condition.

When an enemy has this condition, she behaves similar to when Lunatic. However, she will not attack Momiji, even if Momiji attacks her. Yukari is immune to Puppet.

Oni Hit

Indicated by a complete lack of a HUD.

When Momiji receives this condition by being conked on the head by an oni, the HUD vanishes. The current floor, as well as Momiji's Lv, HP, Spirit Power, and Hunger cannot be seen. Additionally, when Momiji receives damage, it will only say that she receives damage, it will not dictate the amount. There is no immunity to Oni Hit.

Enemies cannot receive this condition.

As Momiji cannot hit herself, Oni Hit probably does not trigger Yuuka Sword.

Optic Camouflage

No visual indication, as it is only an inherent condition.

Momiji cannot have this condition.

When an enemy has this condition, she is invisible to Momiji both on the map and the playing field. Only with Enemy Sight (Major), Trap Sight (Major), or Fireflies will she be visible. Additionally, successfully hitting her with anything, be it for damage or any other effect, will dispel this condition. Nitori begins with Optic Camouflage.

Optic Camouflage does not trigger Yuuka Sword.

Starving

Indicated by the Hunger gauge being empty.

When Momiji receives this condition, she loses health every turn. It occurs when Momiji's Hunger Gauge completely depletes, and lasts until she eats something. Naturally, there is no immunity to Starving.

Enemies cannot receive this condition.

As Momiji cannot hit herself, Starving probably does not trigger Yuuka Sword.

Traps

Traps are objects on the ground that cause bad things to happen. Normally, they are invisible. They are triggered by walking on top of them. Traps will trigger up to a certain amount of times until they vanish. Sometimes it only triggers once, others will trigger many times. Momiji has a 7/8 chance of triggering traps normally.

A trap is uncovered if anyone triggers it, if Momiji makes a melee attack on the space of a trap, or if Momiji eats an Eyedrop and gains Trap Vision (Major). Uncovered traps will not be triggered by Momiji walking on them, but she can force trigger them when standing on them. Uncovered traps are visible on the playing field, and on the explored map.

Enemies cannot trigger traps normally. However, if Momiji is equipped with a Tewi Sword, enemies can trigger traps. The effects of traps may be different than how they affect Momiji. Unlike Momiji, enemies can trigger traps by walking even if they are uncovered.

Traditionally, traps can only be in Rooms, but Tewi can place traps in corridors. Traps take up floor space like Items and Flame Pillars. Thus, they can be prematurely identified if Items or Flame Pillars do not place where they should.

In Easy and Normal, Traps cannot be generated in the first two floors without Invoking the Tewi or Suika cards.

Landmine

Visible as a brown circular button on a grey square panel.

When triggered by Momiji, it causes an explosion in a 3x3 square around it. This causes fixed unavoidable damage to any character (including Momiji) equal to half her current HP. It also destroys any Items in the adjacent spaces. The Letty Shield reduces this damage by 5, while the Remilia Shield reduces this damage by half.

When triggered by an enemy, it has the same effect.

Suzuran Trap

Visible as a green spout.

When triggered by Momiji, it inflicts her with Poison for 30 turns, and Slow for 5. This counts as Suzuran, and so if Momiji has the Medicine Card on her equipment, she only receives the Poison. Lunasa Shield will also protect against the Slow.

When triggered by an enemy, it inflicts her with Poison for 30 turns, and Slow permanently.

Sleep Trap

Visible as a white spout.

When triggered by Momiji, it inflicts her with Sleep for 3 turns.

When triggered by an enemy, it has the same effect.

Bind Trap

Visible as a strange contraption with white pincer-like extensions.

When triggered by Momiji, it inflicts her with Bind for 10 turns.

When triggered by an enemy, it has the same effect.

Disarm Trap

Visible as a strange contraption with green pincer-like extensions.

When triggered by Momiji, it unequips her current Sword and Shield. This even occurs if she has Cursed equipment.

When triggered by an enemy, it inflicts her with Seal permanently.

Confuse Trap

Visible as a circular platform with a green spiral.

When triggered by Momiji, it inflicts her with Confuse for 10 turns.

When triggered by an enemy, it has the same effect.

Warp Trap

Visible as a grey platform with a white W.

When triggered by Momiji, it warps her to a random room.

When triggered by an enemy, it has the same effect.

Wind Trap

Visible as a light purple square with a swirl of white wind.

When triggered by Momiji, she is thrown forward as far as possible and takes 5 damage. Momiji will turn so that she is facing away from the direction she flies. This has the same effect as the Knock Flying Wand (吹き飛ばしの杖).

When triggered by an enemy, it has the same effect.

Hunger Trap

Visible as a darkened, flat Riceball.

When triggered by Momiji, it cuts part of her Hunger gauge. If she is already Starving, she instead has her HP reduced. The HP reduction cannot kill her, though the damage from Starving might do so anyway.

When triggered by an enemy, it reduces her HP.

Water Trap

Visible as a blue drop of water.

When triggered by Momiji, it will make a random Spellcard in her inventory Soaked. It can only target Spellcards on Momiji's currently equipped Sword and Shield, or Spellcards freely standing in her inventory that are not already Soaked. If no viable target is available, nothing happens.

When triggered by an enemy, it can have different effects. Against Nitori, it gives her Power Up permanently. Against Ran or against Chen, it gives her Seal permanently. Against all other enemies, it has no effect.

Magic Circle

Visible as a purple circle with a hexagram. This trap is not normally generated, and is only placed as a special ability of Koakuma when she is killed. It is always visible, but it will always trigger when walked on, and always vanishes afterwards.

When triggered by Momiji, it will reduce her HP by half.

When triggered by an enemy, it has the same effect.

Item Properties

Items can have properties in addition to their normal effects. These normal effects are explained in the Items section.

Cursed (呪)

A Cursed item is listed in the inventory in purple with the character 呪 in front. Cursed items only do 2 damage when thrown. Cursed Equipment, once worn, cannot be removed normally. Youmu (via disarm attack), Marisa (via stealing), and the Disarm Trap (via triggering) are the only methods to remove a Cursed Equipment. Note that a Cursed Hina Sword has increased attack power, while a Cursed Hina Shield is strengthened if also worn with a Cursed Hina Sword. Other Cursed Items cannot be used: food cannot be eaten, Wands cannot be shot, and Spellcards cannot be cast or attached.

A Cursed item remains Cursed at all times. Using the Sanae or Eirin cards will remove this property on all items in Momiji's inventory, while the Hina card can remove it on a single item. While Momiji is equipped with a Hina Shield, her items cannot become Cursed.

Items can only be Cursed in two methods. Hina has a special attack that makes a random item Cursed. The Hina card, if used on a normal item, will also make it Cursed.

Soaked (濡)

A Soaked item is listed in the inventory in light blue with the character 濡 in front. Soaked can only apply to Spellcards. A Soaked Spellcard is just like a Cursed Spellcard: it cannot be attached or cast. However, a Spellcard can be Soaked even if it is attached to a Sword or Shield. When this happens, it will fall off the Sword and Shield, and must be picked up.

A Soaked item will return to normal when descending the stairs. Additionally, using the Sanae or Eirin cards will restore all items in Momiji's inventory. While Momiji is equipped with a Hina Shield, her items cannot become Soaked.

Patchouli's ranged attack, Suwako's special ability, and the Water Trap can make Spellcards attached to currently worn equipment Soaked, as well as freely held Spellcards. Using the Nitori Spellcard makes any one Spellcard Soaked, while the Suwako Spellcard makes all carried Spellcards (but not attached) Soaked. Attaching either of these cards to a Sword or Shield will make one or more Spellcards Soaked.

Unidentified

Unidentified items are listed in the inventory as yellow. They also have a different name, which is merely the item class (Wand, Herb, or Spellcard) with a random prefix. For Wands, the prefix is the material. For Herbs, the prefix is the color. For Spellcards, the prefix is a random letter. While unidentified, the player really has no way of knowing what the item does. The prefixes are randomly generated with each new game.

An item can be identified by successfully seeing its effect. So, the Wand, whether thrown or shot, must actually cause its effect, the Herb must cause its extra effect besides satiation or Spirit Power recovery, and the Spellcard must actually do something. The Keine Spellcard can identify any item, while the Patchouli Spellcard can identify any Wand. Using a Wand only partially identifies it.

In Easy and Normal difficulty, only Wands are unidentified. In Hard, Herbs and Spellcards are also unidentified.

Fire

Fire is a special effect that can occur. It is noted for doing lots of damage.

Yukari takes half damage from all Fire attacks. Remilia, Mokou, and Yumemi are immune to Fire attacks. Momiji takes 5 less damage from Fire attacks if she has a Letty Shield, and no damage from Fire attacks if she has the Remilia Shield.

From the Flame Herb (火炎草)

When a character eats the Flame Herb, she breathes a blast of fire as a shot. This is a Fire attack that does 60-69 damage, and cannot miss.

Flame Pillars

A Flame Pillar is a ground effect that causes Fire damage. Any character who walks on it will take 20 damage (or 30, if Momiji has the Remilia Resonance). Flame Pillars can be caused by the Flame Pillar Wand (火柱の杖), using the Remilia Spellcard, as a side effect of the Remilia Sword, or by Yumemi's Strawberry Cross. Flame Pillars will last for about 10 turns if undisturbed, but every time someone takes damage from the Flame Pillar, its duration is extended.

The Wind

If Momiji spends too long on a dungeon floor, there will be a strong gust of wind. This will blow Momiji out of the dungeon and prematurely end the game. In a normal run, this will not occur with ease, as it occurs after at least 1400 turns (with 2 warnings at 1000 and 1200 respectively).

Monster House

Sometimes, a Room will be randomly generated as a Monster House. This is a room filled with enemies, items, and traps. When Momiji enters the room, any enemies in the room who had Restless Sleep are woken up, and Momiji gains Enemy Sight (Minor). Monster Houses are extremely dangerous, but can be extremely profitable. A lot of very useful items can be found in these, either to simply restock on supplies of food and Herbs, or maybe having just the Spellcard needed. However, with the large number of enemies, it can be fatal if not approached properly. The Room with the stairs down can be a Monster House.

Monster Houses can also be created with the Suika Spellcard. If the Spellcard is Invoked, then it will instantly convert the current Room into a Monster House by randomly creating enemies, items, and traps appropriate for the current floor. If Momiji is in a Corridor, it will warp her into a random room and perform the same function. Pasting the Spellcard to a Sword or Shield does the same thing with one significant difference: the enemies get one free turn afterwards.

Monster Houses will not be generated on the first two floors without using the Suika Card. Note that doing so also puts traps in those floors when they wouldn't otherwise be there. Additionally, Monster Houses cannot be generated on Yukari's floor (15F on Easy, 30F on Normal/Hard). Using a Suika Card will yield a message indicating that the gathering failed, and destroys the card.
