Pine trees pop up from who-knows-where, and the needles fly out at you.
...Which is like, sure, but then there's just the bare trees left over.
This danmaku flies straight in the face of the ecological awareness era. It's kind of, like, metal?

Wha-- HEY! Why are these trees electrified?!
Could this be because of all the power stored in the Life-Guiding Tree?
Well, as a result, the trees burn up once they're done shooting. So I guess it's more eco-friendly than before?

(Hyoushin "Aironikku Aishikuru")
Ice Needle "Ironic Icicle"
Owner
Kodama
Stage 2 — Lunatic
Editor's Comment
Once you dodge the needles and they're left bare, even these youkai trees are harmless.
Or so you'd think! But then they go and shoot icicles at you too.
It's only usable in winter and only good for one shot, but still! That's mega stubborn! (...Although it's spring right now.)

I was wondering whether she was a squirrel or a mouse, but it turns out she's a momonga.
The way she carries herself makes her seem super confident,
but up against us tengu, she's just a cornered rat in the end!

Editor's Comment
She doesn't actually have blades hidden in her wings;
it's a metaphor for how she cuts the air at supersonic speeds like a kamaitachi.
That's real nice... I oughta try that out too... nah, nah, forget I said anything.

(Boufuu "Nodeppou no Muteppou")
Storm "Loose-Cannon Mortar Raccoon" [1]
Owner

Stage 2 — Lunatic
Editor's Comment
She's FAST! I can't keep sight of her!
A highly strategic danmaku attack where she ignores accuracy in favor of speed, which conversely results in the
highest possible chance of landing a hit... in short, "she who shoots often will eventually," uh, something-or-other!

Looks like she's got a stash of acorns stuffed into the Life-Guiding Tree's crannies.
If you let her get above you, you'll wind up with a faceful of these. It's a real pain.
From now on, I'd better do my journalism while looking down on people more.

I was all like, "getting hit with acorns won't hurt," but now look! Grrgh...
Here I am trying to be the nice, polite adult, and she goes and gets all full of herself!
From now on, I'd better do my journalism more forcefully.

Gahh! She's got undetonated bombs squirreled away, too!
Even that human in the black-and-white getup would be shocked to see this.
Maybe I oughta set her nest on fire and blow the whole place up.

I wonder if the Life-Guiding Tree's energy is making her stronger?
Wait, so if I lived in the tree too... then I could turn into, like,
not just a Great Tengu, but a SUPER TENGU?! ...Geh-hee-hee!

(Jiko "Doumeiju Enjou")
Accident "Life-Guiding Tree in Flames"
Owner
Momo Tobikura
Stage 2 — Lunatic
Editor's Comment
Aaaah! We've got an emergency, here! It's fine, though. If we just wait a minute,
the tree's owners will show up, fix everything up nice and tidy, and then leave.
Although they'll probably drag away Miss Squirrel here and she'll mysteriously never be seen again.

  1. 野鉄砲 (nodeppou): a raccoon-like youkai said to make a loud, cannon-like noise. (They make a brief appearance in WaHH chapter 13.) 無鉄砲 (muteppou): recklessness.
  2. Reference to the lyrics of the Japanese children's song "Donguri Korokoro" ('Rolling Chestunut').
  3. The shaku unit of measurement is used in Japanese firework-making.
'my camera's ready to spit fire!', less literally 'my camera's locked and loaded!') is Hatate's dialogue in Double Spoiler when viewing a scene that the player hasn't attempted yet. The line itself is a spoof of a Japanese internet meme (俺のXが火を噴くぜ / 'My X is locked and loaded!').
  5. 'Dai-momonjii': Pun on 'daimonji' (the colloquial name for the Gozan no Okuribi bonfire on Obon) and 'momonjii' (a youkai).
  6. 山焼き (yama-yaki, lit. 'mountain burning') is the practice of burning dead vegetation on a mountain in a controlled fashion. The yama-yaki festival of Mount Wakakusa is a prominent example.
