Notes

  1. Mt. Osore: a mountain in Shimokita, partly known for its role as an annual itako gathering spot. Following the abolition of the han domain system, former daimyō of Aizu Domain (including some Matsudaira) are said to have been forced to move to Shimokita.
  2. "Eight leaves": possibly a reference to the "Eight-leaf tower" (八葉塔) monument and Jizo statue located at Mt. Osore's "Sai-no-Kawara", where children's spirits are said to reside in limbo. The eight mountain peaks surrounding the Lake Usori caldera are also called an "eight-petaled lotus flower".
  3. A copy of Yuyuko Saigyouji's Spell Card of the same name.
  4. "Over Soul" ("O.S." for short): a shaman ability from the series Shaman King.
  5. Zashiki-Asobase: a play on Oshira-asobase (lit. "letting Oshira-sama play"), one of several names for a ritual for worshipping Oshira-sama. It involves an itako lifting up and moving around a figure representing Oshira-sama, as if making it dance. Also a play on the phrase 'letting children play in the sitting room' / kodomo wo zashiki de asobaseru.
  6. Reference to Niijima Yae, a female warrior who played a significant role defending Aizu during the Boshin War. Several accounts of her life and adaptations thereof include sakura imagery in their titles, owing to "yae" (八重) also meaning "eight/many-layered", in the sense of many-layered sakura blossoms (八重桜 / yaezakura).
  7. According to the EX developer commentary video, this card references the presence of Matara-jin (a god associated with the Big Dipper) at Nikkо̄ Tо̄shо̄gū (eg. a depiction of Matara-jin kept at the shrine's treasure museum). May also reference Zōjō-ji (増上寺) temple and its Tokugawa shogun mausoleum, and/or the "outward spiral" layout of Edo city.
  8. Reference to the "number of the beast" (666). The beast's number being 666 is theorized by some to represent imperfection, contrasting it against the divine completion that the number 7 represents throughout the Bible and in gematria. (Meanwhile, 6 also happens to be a perfect number in number theory.)
  9. Fudо̄son (不動尊): an honorific title of Fudо̄-Myо̄о̄, as well as a term used to refer to Buddhist temples worshiping him. This card references five such temples located in Edo (now Tokyo) that were built under direction from the monk Tenkai, with each housing a Fudо̄-Myо̄о̄ statue with differently-colored eyes (black, white, red, blue and yellow).
  10. "四神相応" (shijin souou, "four gods' correspondence"): an East Asian term referring to terrain and geographical relationships that correspond to the four auspicious beasts. The monk Tenkai is said to have selected Edo as the Bakufu's central base because it was an ideal fit for all four directions.
  11. "Kimon" (lit. "oni's gate"): a term for the northeast and southwest directions, considered in feng shui to be particularly unlucky. The monk Tenkai is said to have built various temples and shrines in these directions in the city of Edo, to counteract the gates' effects.
  12. "B & J": short for Boaz and Jachin, two pillars that stood at the front of Solomon's Temple. Their appearance here is taken from their depiction on the "High Priestess" Tarot card. The developer commentary video for the EX stage also briefly likens the towers to Tokyo's modern-day Tokyo Tower and Skytree.
