Patchouli: Lucifer knows a lot that God and angels dare to hide from humans.
She tried to tell it to us. The story of Eden's fruit is part of that.
It was too hard to understand though... Remi was groaning about it for days afterwards.

Miko: The wind that just passed by me came back immediately.
As expected of Lucifer, her mysterious techniques deceive the eyes of common sense.
For her, something of this degree is nothing but playing around.

Yukari: Megiddo is an important land in the Christian battle between light and darkness.
It's a strategic base for the demon army. Perhaps she wishes to turn Gensokyo into a new Megiddo?
It's useless to call more small-fry demons from the outside, they'll fall into the Otherworld.

Patchouli: While searching for the lost Kusanagi, she seems to have acquired the ability to make swords.
It's said it reincarnated together with Emperor Antoku (that shortie) .
I feel like this kid's been desperately trying to replace the sunken Kusanagi since then.

Miko: The blade flashes through darkness, and shines like a meteor of the Yato-no-Kami.
Their name contains the kanji for sword, but in reality they are gods of valleys.
That's just what they became. As time passes, any sword becomes bluntened.

Miko: As long as it has to do with snakes, can she use both holy swords and demon swords?
Speaking of that, Lucifer, who was an archangel, is also a snake dragon.
Really, to what extent are angels and snakes connected?

Patchouli: A fantasy weapon that extends like a whip and slashes like a sword.
If you look closely, the whip part is not actually connected, it's a perfect counterfeit made out of bullets.
I can't do it myself. The development cost would be equivalent to Sakuya's average shrine donation ratio in twenty years.

Yukari: The rod of Asclepius is a medical symbol, not a sword.
It doesn’t fit well with a snake, as it's meant to represent detoxification.
The Aesculapian snake has a name that looks like Asclepius. Is that all?

Yukari: They couldn't overlook her twisted nature.
She was preparing a feast for the sake of the Tougenkyuu bunch,
but these chopsticks are too sharp. Was she planning on eating them instead?

Miko: As the name suggests, the Totsuka no Tsurugi was about the lenght of ten hands.
It was the weapon used to exterminate Orochi by decapitating it.
By the way, for Ms. Tarumi's size, would a ten-hand sword even be possible?

Patchouli:She calls it eighth dragon, but there's only one neck.
The spell name is just a good image she's trying to put up.
The whole world in nightmare? Don't say that, don't say that.

Yukari: Finally, it's a representation of her true appearence, too big to be in our field of vision (screen)
Even if it's her true form, why is it still only one neck?
That's why, as I said, it's a "representation".

Editor's Comment
Yukari: Since the ancient times, snakes have been worshipped together with the sun as symbols of fertility.
It's not hard to imagine she was a truly formidable youkai at the time.
...By the way, from which part of her body did the Kusanagi even come from?

Notes[edit]

  1. Super-rotation, in which a planet's atmosphere can do a whole revolution in the span of four days, occurs on the planet Venus, also known as Ame no Kagaseo in Japanese mythology.
  2. Megiddo is a tell in northern Israel, mentioned in the Book of Revelations as the site of a military gathering during the Apocalypse. Kimi ga Yobu, Megido no Oka de (君が呼ぶメギドの丘で) is also the name of an RPG video game, titled "Voices from Har Megiddo" for its English release.
  3. A pun on "Uchide no Kozuchi" and "Nozuchi", a snake youkai.
  4. 流星光底 (ryuusei koutei) is a four-character idiom referring to the shimmering, comet-like trail (ostensibly) left by a sword swing.
  5. A pun on "extend" and "Excalibur".
  6. A reference to a legend about Princess Yamatototohimomosohime (倭迹迹日百襲媛命), one of the inspirations for Momohime's character. In the legend, the princess was to be married to the god Oomononushi, but accidentally stabbed herself with chopsticks in fright upon discovering that her husband-to-be was secretly a snake. She was subsequently buried in the Chopstick Tomb kofun.
  7. Totsuka no Tsurugi, meaning "ten-hand sword", (ie. a sword with length ten times that of its handle) is one of several names for the sword that Susanoo used to kill Orochi. The way the name of this Spell Card is written ("____ Sword" in kanji, then "____ Blade" in katakana) may also be a reference to Sakuya Izayoi's "Silver Blade" shot from Double Dealing Character.
  8. A pun on the pronunciation of "Midgardsormr" ("Midgard Serpent"), which is another name for the Norse world-snake Jörmungandr. "Form" may be a reference to the 'form changes' in the Pokemon series; the developers of Riverbed Soul Saver have jokingly referred to the game's power-up system as being inspired by the Mega Evolutions from Pokemon as well.
  9. This is a pun on the name Yamata-no-Orochi (八岐の大蛇, "Eight-headed serpent") and on Yamatai (邪馬台), the purported kingdom that was ruled over by Queen Himiko.
