Notes
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 Based on the tale depicted in the Shenxian Zhuan, where the hermit Wang Yao cured people of illness by calling out and trapping the jami possessing them into a prison drawn on the ground.
- ↑ 2.0 2.1 Derived from "Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei", the name of two distinct video games based on a trilogy of science-fantasy novels written by Japanese author Aya Nishitani, one of which would go on to form the Megami Tensei franchise.
- ↑ 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 A Zoetrope is a type of 19th century revolving lantern. The device consisted of a cylindrical drum with images cut on its inner surface, and when that device was spun, it'd give the impression of continuous motion. In addition, the term "soumatou" (走馬灯, lit. "revolving lantern") is often associated with the "flashback" phenomenon that is said to occur before death.
- ↑ 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3 "La Corriveau" is a well-known folktale originating from Quebec, Canada. In 1776, Marie-Josephte Corriveau was declared guilty of murdering her second husband and sentenced to public execution in Quebec City. Her corpse was hung within an iron gibbet and publicly displayed for five weeks until it had completely decayed, leaving nothing but bone. Marie's fate had inspired several Canadian folktales, depicting her as a witch who had been with seven husbands and murdered each of them. After her execution, Marie's ghost would continue to terrorize any passerbys unlucky enough to cross her path.
- ↑ 5.0 5.1 5.2 5.3 A concept for a prison structure crafted by the British philosopher, Jeremy Bentham. The structure consisted of a central monitoring tower surrounded by several cells facing towards it. Bentham had believed the structure would make prisoners feel like they're being watched, even when there were no jailers around, thus making the convict self-disciplined.
- ↑ "De røde sko" (The Red Shoes) is a fairy tale written by Danish author and poet, Hans Christian Andersen. In this story, a young girl named Karen acquires a pair of red shoes and becomes so infatuated by them that she wears them to church, despite the warnings of her foster mother. As a result, the shoes are cursed and Karen is forced to dance tirelessly as punishment for her vanity.
