Servants of Harvest Wish/Characters

From Touhou Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Most of the characters in Servants of Harvest Wish are original and non-existent in the Touhou Project. Aside from Ryouko, who was introduced in The Shattered Sky, the playable characters in this game are officially part of the Touhou Project. Each playable character has two shot types to choose from.

All other characters, aside from the Stage 1 and Stage 4 midbosses, are original.

Reimu Hakurei
Shrine Maiden of the Soothing Breeze

Reimu Hakurei
Playable Character

Species: Human

Ability: Mainly flying in the sky

The all-too-familiar shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine.
She is Gensokyo's main incident resolver. Her job is youkai extermination.
Though, because she treats humans and youkai the same,
she often ends up befriending the youkai she exterminates in the end.
The matter is rather urgent this time around.

The human village relies heavily on its crops and vegetation.
It wouldn’t take long for an incident of this nature to lead to a famine.
Reimu acknowledged this, so she wasted no time heading out to resolve this issue.

Marisa Kirisame
Magician of the Cleansing Rain

Marisa Kirisame
Playable Character

Species: Human

Ability: Using magic

An ordinary magician living in Gensokyo.
Residing deep within the Forest of Magic, she has a large collection of a variety of things; books, magic utensils, and just plain junk.

Just like Reimu, she too recognizes the danger of such an incident. As a human herself,
she feels an obligation to restore the harvest crops and prevent starvation within the human village.

She’s also quite curious as to the nature of the youkai behind the incident.

Sanae Kochiya
Living God of the Sustaining Earth

Sanae Kochiya
Playable Character

Species: Human (living god)

Ability: Causing miracles

The Shrine Maiden who resides on Youkai Mountain.
She runs a shrine which mostly dedicates itself to gathering faith from youkai.

She’s also a living god, as she is a descendent of Suwako Moriya, one of the two goddesses of her shrine.

Naturally, an incident of this nature would not only cause famine, but also upset the gods.
Borrowing power from Kanako and Suwako as usual, she set off to exterminate the mastermind.

Ryouko
Dragon of the Awakening Sunlight

Ryouko
Playable Character

Species: Dragon

Ability: Breathing fire; manipulating asteroids

A dragon who was summoned to destroy Gensokyo alongside a large meteor during the events of The Shattered Sky.
After being exterminated, she took up residence near the human village alongside her summoner and master, Soujouko.

Ryouko has a passion for baking, and she uses her fire abilities to supplement that.
Though, she hides this fact from humans, since youkai are forbidden to exist within the human village.
She can also hide her tail and antlers at will when she’s in the village, masquerading as another human.

Since wheat is an essential part of her trade, this incident presents quite the problem for Ryouko.
With haste, she went off to remedy this bothersome situation.

The first stage midboss. She and her older sister are regarded as symbols of autumn.

Together they regulate the season and are honored at a festival in the human village each harvest season.
Minoriko can give prosperity to the harvest, ensuring proper growth and abundancy.

However, this year the crops of Gensokyo mysteriously became devoid of their vitality.
In a troubled state, she quickly set off to try and remedy the situation.
To her dismay, her powers seemed to fail her, and she was unable to restore the lifeless crops.

It was then that she was approached and attacked by someone flying towards the village...

Servants of Harvest Wish - Akami Kurotsuka's Profile

A returning character from The Shattered Sky. She’s merely a stage 1 boss this time around.

Aka-shita are known to destroy crops, so it was reasonable for the heroines to believe that she was the culprit.
During the time of the incident, she was seen suspiciously wandering around the outskirts of the human village.

Of course, Akami was never involved in the harvest draining at all.
Her ideology is that starving her prey makes them less enjoyable to eat.

...At least, that’s what she claims. In reality, she knows not to mess with the humans from the village.
The resulting exorcism from the shrine maiden would not be desirable.
Despite that, she remains a rather hot-headed and melodramatic youkai;
sometimes even claiming responsibility for incidents around her.

Quite a troublesome youkai, isn't she?

Servants of Harvest Wish - Kagemo's Profile

A rather peculiar human from the outside world.

Praised by her peers and mentors, she was a top notch Yosakoi Dancer
who spent many years of dedicated training to reach her current level.

Her favorite hobby was to sneak away into quiet areas like forests in order to practice her trade.

On one of her practice treks, she accidently crossed the Hakurei Barrier and into Gensokyo
during a time when it was heavily weakened (as a result of the events of The Shattered Sky).
While she was lost, she stumbled upon a youkai who brutally stripped her of all autonomy.

Who was this youkai? What were their intentions? Are they connected to the harvest draining incident?
The questions remain endless...

Servants of Harvest Wish - Kagemo and Meimei's Profile (Extra)

Kagemo had been possessed by a mysterious mastermind who permanently attached a white fox mask onto her face.

The mask itself was cursed to constantly seep demonic energy into her system. Should anyone dare to touch it and take it off her face (not that Kagemo had the willpower to take it off herself),
the masks's energy would enter the victim's system through their fingers and cause some horrific cognitive mutations.

"Kagemo" isn't her name, it's a measly nickname given to her by her master. They never bothered to learn her name, there was no point; after all, the human side of her didn't exist anymore.
As she was a regular girl, Kagemo was unable to use magic until the mask was put on her. The mask also served as a power source, drawing some of the master's magic.
Even though her bullets look like colorful candy, the amount of evil contained in a single bullet can turn the nicest person into a mindless beast controlled by the mastermind.
Kagemo, however, still retained a bit of what she used to be. She is still a cheerful young lady who enjoys dancing her worries away.

A grand plan was in order - the mastermind, still in her spirit form, would wish for a new body with a hinnagami. Kagemo was tasked to gather dirt from unsecured graves for the creation of this wishing doll.
Kagemo had to hasten unless she wanted to be punished by her mistress. Thus, Meimei was born after just a few weeks. Regular hinnagami take years to create, so Meimei clearly wasn't fit for the enormous wish she was created for.
The mastermind was extremely disappointed and decided to discard her immediately, but another idea sprung into their mind.
What if Kagemo used Meimei to track down the special wish-fulfilling jewel that Inari has? Meimei proved to be useful after all... well, as a GPS more than anything.
After using the jewel, the mastermind created a new body for herself - a voluptuous, ill-wishing kitsune lady that named herself Shirigai no Mamo.
To her, Meimei and Kagemo had zero worth, so to avoid being blamed for the theft of the jewel, she sent the duo back to the Harvest Moon Shrine.
If they were caught, they would die, not her. She's clearly not the nicest person to her underlings...

During the time of running around Gensokyo, being chased by Inari's servants or the heroines, Kagemo and Meimei had a lot of time to bond.
Back in the village, Kagemo hid Meimei to prevent her from attracting the eyes of others, but Meimei couldn't stand constantly running away from everybody.
They deeply care about each other, having built up a younger sister- elder sister relationship thanks to their similar fates.. Kagemo treated Meimei not like a fellow servant, but like a best friend.
Considering how her autonomy was taken from her, the wishing doll was actually the only glimmer of hope for Kagemo's sanity.
Thanks to Meimei and all the fun they have on a daily basis, Kagemo hasn't lost the entirety of her mind thanks to Meimei.
Not yet, at least... Mamo has taken note of this, so she will "toy" with her to get rid of the only trace of the girl Kagemo once used to be.

Heart of the Swarm

Yukiko Tsubaki (鍔木 幸子 Tsubaki Yukiko) is the Stage 3 midboss (twice) and boss.

Concept

Yukiko's ability comes from a legend originating from the Yamata prefecture, in which two merchants travelling along a mountain had passed by a Tsubaki tree. As they did so, a beautiful woman appeared out of nowhere before breathing on one of the men, with her breath turning that man into a bee. She then disappeared into the Tsubaki tree, with the man-turned-bee following behind her. The bee had landed on a flower, but tree's fragrance had turned poisonous by that point, so as soon as the bee smelled the flower, it and the flower both fell to the ground. The surviving merchant picked up the bee and the flower and rushed to a nearby temple in the hopes of saving his friend or returning him to his human form. The priest had recited multiple sutras and read multiple prayers over the bee, but the bee couldn't be saved. The surviving merchant then buried the bee and the flower together.

Name

Her given name, Yukiko (幸子), means "lucky child".

Her surname, Tsubaki (鍔木), is taken from the Japanese name of the camellia tree: tsubaki (ツバキ or 椿), but is written with characters that mean "brim" and "tree".

When written in western order, her name resembles yuki tsubaki (雪椿), the Japanese name of the Camellia japonica species.

A youkai who’s been around for a long time. She lives peacefully in a dense, lush forest.

She was once a mere camellia tree. Though harmless, it was a beautiful tree which bore majestic red roses each winter.
Eventually, this tree evolved into a youkai. The now youkai tree spirit gained the ability to seperate her body from the tree,
as well as a particularly frightening ability. Yukiko could transform people into animals.

Throughout time, she started to become a pretty big thorn in Gensokyo’s side.
She would often seduce humans into her domain with soothing scents, relaxing auras,
and sometimes just her mere presence as a beautiful maiden.
Her victims would be transformed into bees for her hive.
Rumors circulated about the mysterious, dangerous, and yet beautiful woman from the forest who would bewitch anyone that came near her.
When word of this reached the Hakurei Shrine Maiden (who at the time, of course, was not Reimu),
they set off to exterminate this troublesome youkai.

A long and grueling battle was fought, but the shrine maiden was victorious
and Yukiko freed the human villagers from her treacherous curse.

So, if not humans, what are all those bees in her hive?

The secret is that she only transforms fairies for her hive. She stopped targetting humans after the incident.
Though, she hates to admit that fact, so she'll usually claim her hive is full of humans anyway.

In truth, she never actually intended on bewitching the heroines.
She just wanted to amuse herself since she doesn't ever get any actual visitors.
Despite being a hive queen, she's actually quite lonely.

A tengu reporter who lives in the mountain, but her speedy flight makes her capable of reaching any spot in Gensokyo in the blink of an eye.

When conducting interviews with weaklings and powerful youkai alike, she is polite and sincere. Surprisingly, she's quite a workaholic.

Word spread around the mountain about the recent famine in the village, but due to the great tengu's orders, Aya couldn't head there immediately.
Only during the middle of the night was she able to sneak out of the mountain and go to the village.

What she encountered on her way was the heroine. Of course, Aya's first instinct was to get the juiciest details about the incident from her.

Servants of Harvest Wish - Meimei's Profile

A petite and enigmatic wishing doll whose automation was brought by a rather cursed ritual.

It's said that a hinnagami is born by gathering the clay of the dead for three years.
Miraculously, with the aid of a malicious youkai, Kagemo was able to significantly speed up the process to a mere three weeks.

Families that wander into sudden prosperity and luck are accused of utilizing the powers of a hinnagami.
Those wishes, of course, come with a cost - despite its usefulness, the hinnagami is a highly cursed object which eventually becomes overly attached to its owner.
Even after death, the cursed doll would follow its owner, demanding more wishes with an eerie "What's next?".
These wishing dolls are reported to punish their owners. The severity of this punishment depends entirely on the value of what was wished for.

Kagemo and her master knew that Meimei's powers had to be used sparingly to avoid a great punishment at the end. Meimei's creation, of course, had its selfish purpose.
Kagemo's master lacked a proper body, which greatly hindered her magic ability. Meimei's power was simply not enough to create a stable body, thus rendering her useless.
Filled with rage, the master deemed her a completely useless ragdoll and went back to brainstorming new ways to gain a body. At least Kagemo would have a plaything.
Not like the master cared; Kagemo would be punished by the wishes, after all.

An idea sprouted inside the evil mastermind's head. By tracking down the fabled Harvest Moon Shrine, a legendary gem named the "wish-fulfilling jewel" could be used to wish for the new body.
As it was Inari's source of power, wishing for a new body would be an easy task with no consequences in the afterlife. It turns out that Meimei could be used after all.
A wish seemingly as minor as "lead the way to this shrine" would come with little to no consequence, not to mention the great benefit for their master.
Kagemo had doubts about it working; how would Meimei know where to look for that shrine?
Because of the powers of Kagemo's wishing, a strange internal force gave her all required directions to the long forgotten shrine.
The burglary had been committed. Kagemo and Meimei made a run for it. Had they stayed for a moment longer, they would've been caught by the shrine's guardians.

After using the jewel's power, their master got what she wanted. She needed some time to get used to the body and recover their magic, so she was vulnerable.
On the next day, however, a great famine struck Gensokyo's human village. Starving, the miserable humans tried their best to get some more food, but the harvest was very poor.
Worried about exterminators and Inari going after her tail, the master panicked, so after using the jewel, she wanted Kagemo and Meimei to sneak back into the Harvest Moon Shrine and return it.
She didn't have the strength to fight against Inari at that point, so calming them down was the right choice.

Regular hinnagami take years to create, so Meimei clearly wasn't fit for the enormous wish
she was created for.

Servants of Harvest Wish - Saruta and Uzume Mitama's Profile

The literal Servants of Harvest Wish. Brought to creation by the magic of their mistress, Touko Ugajin, who is Gensokyo’s manifestation of the goddess Inari.

They are both Myoubu, based on the statues often found at Inari shrines. They're often adorned with yodarekake (type of bib) and given various offerings.
They serve as guardians for their mistress and shrine, but also take a huge role in blessing the land and waters during harvest season.

The two aren’t related by blood but share a sort of sibling relationship. After all, they both share the same occupation - being the dutiful servants of their mistress.
As Touko has raised and treated them with much love and care for all their existence, they also see her as a sort of maternal figure.
The servants would do literally anything for the sake of their mistress, through life and death.

Saruta is the “younger” of the two siblings, even though they are technically the same age.
She's bold and hot-headed, often diving headfirst into conflicts without much thought and displaying a headstrong and impatient demeanor.
Though she is often reckless, everything she does is dedicated to her fellow servant and mistress. She represents the shrine's "brawn".

Saruta wields the power of Earth. Her role in each harvest season is to fertilize the soil to allow abundant crop to grow.
Her fighting style consists of creating earthquakes and fissures, as well as slashing at her opponents violently with her mighty earthly-powered rake.
Despite her headfirst and strong-willed nature, she’d be unable to manage by herself without the guidance of her fellow servant Uzume.

Uzume is the “elder” sibling and, as you would have guessed, she's much calmer and more analytical as opposed to Saruta.
She acts as the levelheaded sibling who guides her brash younger sister to the right path. Uzume is the “brains” of the shrine and is often seen as the nicer one to be around.

Uzume wields the power of water. Her responsibility during harvest seasons is to distribute pure rainfall over the paddies in order to encourage prosperous growth.
Her fighting style is to pour on her enemies the wrath of raging waves and pelt them with bone-chilling ice. She never runs out of water, as her bucket contains an infinite amount.
Though Uzume would never admit it, she finds herself indecisive and hesitant at times, often overthinking everything.
It’s thanks to Saruta’s bold and proactive nature, that Uzume finds herself motivated to act more.

These two, despite their contrasting personalities, compensate their individual weaknesses perfectly, and make quite the formidable, daunting duo.
It's quite a fortune that Touko is blessed with Uzume and Saruta, as both of them help her stray away from unnecessary danger.

When their mistress’ jewel was swiped away from their shrine, the two were thrown into quite a frenzy.
They did not know the identity of the thief, nor the motivation, but a strange innate voice in their head drove them to what they thought best in the situation.

“Protect your mistress. Protect your mistress at all costs.”

It could have been argued that one of them should have stayed with Touko, while the other scoured Gensokyo for the missing jewel.
In reality, it's likely that both were too weak to travel far away from the shrine anyway. Their power correlates to their mistress', as they derive much of their power from her.
Fortunately for them, Gensokyo has its own fair share of incident solvers. Fate was already geared in their favor as soon as one particular Gensokyo resident left their abode to resolve the incident.

Touko Ugajin (宇賀神 稲狐 Ugajin Touko) is the Stage 6 boss.

Concept

Touko is based on various manifestations of Inari, the most popular kami of grain in Japanese mythology. In particular, Touko's background draws from those of Ukanomitama, the "grain kami" of the Inari-sanza, as well as her namesake, Ugajin.

Name

Her given name, Touko (稲狐), is written with characters meaning "rice plant" and "fox". The character 稲 also occurs in the name of Inari (稲荷).
Incidentally, "Touko" is a common Japanese female given name, which can be written in several different ways.

Her surname, Ugajin (宇賀神), is the name of a fertility kami in Japanese mythology, often identified with Benzaiten and, by extension, Inari.

Appearance

Her design and silhouette are based on the image of a straw hat-wearing rice farmer, carrying buckets of water, soil, or grain over their shoulders using a carrying pole.

Servants of Harvest Wish - Touko Ugajin's Profile

Touko Ugajin, the goddess residing in the one-of-a-kind Harvest Moon Shrine, is Gensokyo's resident manifestation of Inari.

She herself is compassionate and a bit eccentric, but in comparison to the different interpretations of Inari, she's objectively the most carefree one.

Inari is one of the principal gods of Shinto and is associated with fertility, rice cultivation and prosperity in general.
Despite Inari's prominence in Shinto all around Japan, little is actually know about this god's origin. Due to its enigmatic veil, there's no standard way to depict Inari.
Different versions of Inari popped out around Japan, especially during the Edo period, when Inari worship became widespread.
The most consistent feature of all depictions of Inari is the symbolization of abundance of material - be it food, stock or wealth.
Inari shrines stand out with their long paths with vermilion torii and yodarekake-adorned kitsune statues, which hold symbolic items like a sheaf of rice or jewels.

The Harvest Moon Shrine is no different from a regular Inari shrine on the outside, but the interior holds a special secret.
Few people, either blessed by powerful magic or notable for their hard work and good deeds, can access a wondrous landscape untouched by man.
This magical land is thought to be one step away from Heaven, and this has influence on the human psyche. People strive perfection with the hopes to please Inari and be sent to Heaven.

Touko finds assistance in her faithful myoubu servants Uzume and Saruta. She accepts them as if they were her children, but they're more akin to pets.
She is said to have created both of them with a combination of magic and elements of nature - clear water for Uzume and untouched soil for Saruta.
Both servants are in charge of helping humans on Earth; a perfect combination of rainfall or fertile soil is needed for an abundant harvest.
Of course, they also have to keep a close eye on the shrine and its visitors. Despite their contrastive personalities, Uzume and Saruta make a notable team thanks to their devotion to their mistress.

As a god, Touko possesses incredible magical abilities, but only resorts to combat when she, her shrine, or her servants are threatened.
Though, since she cares deeply about mankind, it's fairly difficult to get on her bad side. Touko, just like other gods, becomes more powerful the more worshipers Inari has.
Touko's entire body is somewhat magical, too. If Gensokyo's harvest is strong, her hair can grow to ridiculous lengths, signifying the harvest's power.
This is a double-edged sword, however, as one manifestation of Inari is unable to control such quantity of power.
This is why Touko chose to contain the majority of the energy drawn from worshipers into a single shiny jewel - the wish-fulfilling jewel.

The hopes and prayers of those dedicated to Inari have in turn fueled the jewel with wish-granting magic. In return, this drew in even more followers for Inari and increased the jewel's power.
Uzume and Saruta were concerned that the wish-fulfilling jewel may fall into Evil's hands. As it holds great power, it can be easily abused.
However, Touko dismissed their worries. You see, Touko is somebody who believes in the good in humans; that all people, no matter how much they've sinned, deserve a second chance.
It would be a shame if someone malicious enough dared to steal the jewel for their own selfish needs... wouldn't it?

Shirigai no Mamo (紂 眞藻) is the Extra Stage boss and the mastermind behind the harvest incident.

Concept

Name

The name Shirigai (紂) is a Japanese reading of Zhou, the pejorative posthumous name of Emperor Xin of Shang. It refers to a horse crupper, which is the rear part of a saddle that is most likely to be soiled by a horse. Daji, one of Mamo's previous identities, was the favorite concubine of King Zhou.

Her given name, Mamo (眞藻), is derived from Tamamo-no-Mae (玉藻の前), written with characters meaning "truth" and "seaweed".

In-universe, she chose her own name to represent both her origins as Daji and her most recent history as Tamamo-no-Mae.

Appearance

We don't know how she looked like prior her "reincarnation". In her actual "perfect" body, she looks like a beautiful tall woman with red eyes, purplish dark blue hair with dark red tips. Atop her hair is her dark red ears. She also have a huge dark blue tail tied with a string with stones on it. She wears a long, dark pink vest tied to her by a rope similar to a shimenawa albeit without the paper charms, a square patterned dark red skirt, a pair of dark tights and a pair of high boots. She also wears a pair of square glasses. She is also manipulating four crystals with the different names she took on them. If we base on her spell card we can assume that the crystals are respectively Ruby, Sapphire, Jade and Amber.

She is a real Nine-Tailed Fox as opposed to Ran Yakumo, who is merely a shikigami possessing a fox youkai.

Personality

Shirigai no Mamo is a rather selfish, cruel and cunning individual for who "the end justify the means". She doesn't care at all for her servants, treating them and considering them trash. She only wants to attract the attention on her. She has a thirst for battle and chaos, but also enjoys crafting riddles. She only interested in individuals who proved their strength to her. She also likes trivia games, but because she possesses four lives worth of intelligence, it's nearly impossible to beat her at them.

Powers and abilities

Shirigai no Mamo possess four crystals loaded with memories of her previous lives. As a result, she possesses four lives of knowledge with her.

-Daji/Ruby/妲己

The patterns expelled from this stone are not homing, only expanding.

-Lady Kayou/Sapphire/華陽

The patterns expelled from this stone are homing but they don't change form.

-Bao Si/Jade/

The patterns expelled from this stone are homing but they deform.

-Tamamo-no-Mae/Amber/

The patterns expelled from this stone are completely random.

If someone touches the crystals, they'll be assaulted by memories of the life inside that are so vivid that one would be left in shock.

Controlling minds

Shirigai no Mamo, outside typical superhuman characteristics of youkai, can manipulate the minds of people. We cannot know if there is a condition like contact to activate it but once it's here, it simply cannot be cut. The only mean to sever the mind control is by isolating the owner with barriers and wards.

Story

Shirigai no Mamo is a nine-tailed fox (Kyuubi no kistune) who took on the identities of several beautiful women in order to bring chaos and ruin to several countries in the Asian region.

She took on many forms, such as Daji (China), Lady Kayou (華陽夫人) (India), Bao Si (褒姒) (China) and Tamamo-no-mae (Japan). She was exorcised each time, but her spirit remained. It was only after she was Tamamo-no-Mae and her assassination plan was thwarted that she was herself killed, turning into the Killing Stone (Sessho Seiki/殺生石). In this stone, her spirit continuously released poisonous gas, killing everyone who dare touch the stone.

She was exorcised by a Buddhist monk named Gennō Shinshō (源翁心昭), seemingly for good, as she claimed to have repented since then. But it was an act as she readied her next plan.

Deemed a legend and believed to have left this world, the Killing Stone, with Mamo's soul still bound to it, faded away into Gensokyo and ended up on the Road of Reconsideration.

Because of the previous incident in The Shattered Sky, many humans were transported into Gensokyo. One of them sat on the stone after a long walk to rest her legs. The clueless human's mind was instantly corrupted by Shirigai no Mamo the moment she sat down on the stone. The mastermind gave her a mask to control her mind and a new identity: Kagemo.

After making Kagemo her servant, Mamo forced her to make a doll (Hinnagami) who could grant her wish: Having a new, perfect body. Normally, the process of making a Hinnagami took 3 years, but Mamo couldn't wait that long and pushed Kagemo to her limit, and in just three weeks, Meimei was born. But, whether it was because the process of creating her was rushed or some other factor, Meimei was unable to grant Mamo's wish, and was thus considered useless.

After that, Mamo heard of Touko Ugajin's wish-granting jewel and ordered Kagemo and Meimei to steal the jewel and bring it to her. But because she was unaware of the jewel's location, she had ordered Kagemo to wish for Meimei to reveal the jewel's location. After successfully stealing the jewel, Mamo was able to construct a new body for herself using its power.

Mamo quickly saw what her theft caused and decided, half-heartily, to have Kagemo and Meimei return the jewel. But Kagemo and Meimei, after having been intercepted by the heroines, relinquished the jewel to them in order to avoid responsibility for stealing it in the first place.

When Kagemo and Meimei returned beaten up, Mamo wasn't even angry. Once she discovered that the energy wafting from Kagemo and Meimei was different from that of Touko's shrine maidens, she had concluded that there was another actor at play, one that was able to put a dent in the spell she was using to manipulate Kagemo. Delighted, Mamo arranged to meet up with that person.

After the incident, she was sealed away by Reimu and Yukari near Marisa's house in the forest of magic. Because of the seals placed on her, her mind control over Kagemo stopped and the mask shattered, permitting Kagemo to regain control of herself. She is also regularly visited by Yukiko Tsubaki.

Servants of Harvest Wish - Shirigai no Mamo's Profile

The ultimate, absolute mastermind behind the harvest incident. It was none other than she who tipped the first domino which set the stage for all of this story's events.

Her singular goal was to obtain a new, physical body to call her own. Absolutely nothing else mattered until she got what she wanted, not even the lives of innocent humans.

As a preface, she is a nine-tailed fox youkai with a long, documented history of stirring up trouble across Asia, typically by seducing rulers and then seizing control of their kingdoms.
She assumed several identities in various countries over the ages: Daji and Bao Si in China, Lady Kayou in India, and, most recently, Tamamo-no-Mae in Japan.
Eventually, her reign of chaos was put to an end--after attempting to kill Emperor Toba, her plot was exposed and she herself was assassinated.
What remained of her body and spirit was transformed into an object known as the "killing stone", which emitted miasma and killed all who laid a finger on it.

According to legend, the fox's spirit was eventually exorcised, causing the killing stone to lose its deadly qualities, but... in truth, it was merely an act.
She feigned repentance in order to deceive the world into thinking that she was no longer a threat when, in reality, she had already begun planning her next diabolical scheme.
As time passed and people accepted the belief that the wicked fox was gone for good, the killing stone, with the fox's soul bound to it, finally passed into fantasy.

At that point, all she could do was wait. During the events of the previous summer's falling meteor incident, the barrier between the Outside World and Gensokyo was weakened, which resulted in a surplus of humans and objects being spirited away.
Among them was a Yosakoi dancer from the Kouchi prefecture who, scared and confused, wandered through the overgrown outskirts of Gensokyo.
Eventually, the dancer stumbled across a clearing in the woods, in the center of which stood a smooth, waist-height stone wrapped in shimenawa.

"That looks like a comfortable place to sit. I've been walking for hours...", she thought to herself... without realizing that it would be the last thing she would be able to think for a long time.
From that point on, all of her thoughts, feelings, and memories were determined by the fox, who attached a mask to the dancer's face and christened her "Kagemo".
Most who touched the stone dropped dead on the spot, but the fox had a particularly special plan for Kagemo. Losing one's sense of self is arguably a fate worth than death, after all.

Without a moment's hesitation, Kagemo set out to realize her new master's ambition to obtain a new body.
The initial plan was for Kagemo to collect soil and clay from a cemetery in order to create a hinnagami--a doll that could, in theory, grant the fox's wish to receive a new body.
Normally, the process of creating a hinnagami would take about three years, but the fox pushed Kagemo to her limit, thus shortening the process to a few weeks' time.
Through their combined efforts (but mostly Kagemo's), Meimei was born. Unfortunately, due to her rushed creation or some other factor, Meimei proved unable to realize the fox's wish to a satisfactory extent.

Of course, it was too good to be true. The fox then set her sights on the wish-fulfilling jewel, a powerful artifact said to exist wherever the god Inari had manifested.
Surely there was one of those in Gensokyo, so she had Kagemo use Meimei to wish for a direct path leading to its location, and sent the two off to retrieve it.
Barely a day later, on a streak of good luck, Kagemo managed to steal the jewel and bring it back to the fox's stone. Without skipping a beat, Kagemo wished her master a new body--one as perfect as could be...
Suddenly, a blinding light shone from both the jewel and the killing stone, knocking Kagemo and Meimei off their feet. When they came to, in front of them stood a tall, beautiful woman they had never seen before.
That woman was their master, the fox who had influenced their every move up to that moment, now in physical form.
With a grin, she introduced herself as "Shirigai no Mamo": a name encompassing both her origins as the concubine of King Zhou (whose name can be read as "Shirigai") and her recent history as Tamamo-no-Mae.

As time passed, word got out that the crops in the Human Village started to wilt. Ever bright and sharp, Mamo concluded that it was a direct consequence of Inari and the wish-fulfilling jewel being far apart.
Reluctantly, Mamo sent Kagemo and Meimei off to return the jewel both to (hopefully) appease the god it belonged to as well as to avoid being hunted down and exterminated.
She didn't want all her (read: Kagemo's) hard work to obtain her new body to go to waste, after all.
However, what Mamo least expected was for Kagemo and Meimei to return beaten up, the former with her mask cracked. Instead of anger, sorrow, or even the slightest of pity, Mamo felt a sense of delight.
The dancer and the doll both reeked of profane energy, so there was no way that the shrine's sacred servants could have been the ones to attack them.
That meant there was another actor at play, someone powerful enough to put a dent in the spell holding Kagemo hostage. Mamo took great interest in that person, and forged a plan to lead them into her lair to meet them herself.
She switched out Kagemo's mask with a more stable and powerful replacement, and tossed what remained of the old one around the outskirts of the Human Village. Whoever broke the mask would surely follow the footprints leading to it.
And then, it was only a matter of time until their fated reunion.

Fun fact: The four crystal-like objects that Mamo has in her possession are physical partitions of her memory, each of which came into existence following the abandonment of one of her previous identities.
Touching one of the objects induces vivid flashbacks of the corresponding era of her life, so vivid that the average human would be left in a state of shock.
It is through these objects that Mamo possesses several lifetimes' worth of knowledge. As a result, it's nigh impossible to beat her at trivia games. Don't even try it.
