Most of the characters in Shining Shooting Star are original and non-existent in the Touhou Project. The following five are, however, officially part of the Touhou Project and are playable or supporting characters in Shining Shooting Star.
Shrine Maiden of Paradise
Ability: Free flight
The Hakurei shrine maiden tasked by the people of the Human Village to exterminate youkai and resolve incidents.
She doesn't care much for a lively atmosphere. Rather than heading to the Human Village to watch the meteor shower during the Summer Night Festival, she prefers relaxing in the shrine while sipping tea.
But this time, relying on her shrine maiden's intuition, she sensed that the meteor shower contained an unnatural power, and thought that it would be troublesome if some youkai was indeed messing around. Her thoughts happened to coincide with Shinmyoumaru's, so they set out to investigate together.
Support Character (Reimu)
Ability: Capable of using the Miracle Mallet
The descendant of Issun-boshi. She has been staying with Reimu ever since the events of Double Dealing Character.
She had succeeded in withdrawing the Miracle Mallet's power and sealed it away as she had no intention of using it again.
However, she sensed an abnormal storm of magic. Perhaps someone was secretly plotting something. Both she and Reimu felt the same way, so to repay Reimu's hospitality, Shinmyoumaru decided to help Reimu resolve the incident.
Ability: Using magic
An ordinary magician living in Gensokyo who likes collecting things.
She lives in her Kirisame Magic Shop within the Forest of Magic, and accepts youkai extermination jobs. However, she's rarely present in the shop.
Even before the meteor shower occurred, she had already sensed their waves of powerful magic. She thought that this was an opportunity not to be missed, and decided to use the fallen meteor fragments to enhance her own magic.
Living God on the Mountaintop
Ability: Creating miracles
Shrine maiden living in the Moriya Shrine, whose usual activities involve collecting faith from throughout the region.
It's been almost 2 years since she entered Gensokyo, and she's become used to exterminating youkai, thus her power as a living god has also gradually increased.
Although she was able to create miracles herself, this meteor shower was undoubtedly the result of a great miracle created by someone powerful. If she were to acquire this power, then her faith would certainly increase. With these thoughts, she set off.
Tightly-Shut Rose of Love
Ability: Manipulating the unconscious
The younger sister of Satori Komeiji. Likes to play on the surface.
As a mind-reading youkai, when she learnt that reading minds would only cause others to hate her, she closed her mind-reading third eye.
While playing on the surface around the shrine as usual, she overheard Reimu and Shinmyoumaru's conversation. Taking an interest in the power contained within the shooting stars, she headed off in its direction.
Ami (娅米) is the stage 1 boss and midboss.
Ami is just a regular fairy making a danmaku party in the forest. She tries to invite the heroines to her party and have some duels with them, but she is easily defeated.
Shining Shooting Star - Ami's Profile
Ability: Causing uproars on summer nights
A fairy of the breeze, she always makes a racket as soon as night falls. There isn't any particular reason for this, other than that she enjoys a lively atmosphere, and she's even noisier in a group with other fairies. Usually, she'll quieten down once she's been beaten up.
This time, thanks to the ongoing Summer Night Festival in the Human Village, she was especially noisy, so when the incident-resolver passed by, she was harshly dealt with.

Ability: Using a bow and arrows
The human that suddenly appeared in front of the heroines to stop them from continuing any further. Rakukun Momosame's younger sister.
Since her elder sister inherited their ancestral secret arts, her parents passed their clan's archery techniques on to her. She was extremely diligent while learning to use the bow, and was able to hit targets from very far away since she was very young, so she relied on bow-hunting to feed the family. However, her father was still the one who would go out hunting most of the time.
She likes her elder sister a lot, and the two are very close. She feels that her sister is constantly protecting her, and has to shoulder a significant burden on her own, so she's always thinking of doing something to help her out. However, each time she raised the idea, her parents and sister would object with "you're still young, we don't require your help on these matters".
This time, her sister wanted to invoke their clan's secret prayer arts, so she volunteered to get in the way of anyone who would obstruct them, be it shrine maidens or youkai. The time had finally come for her to help her sister out.
Koreirei (古灵灵) is the stage 3 midboss.
Koreirei is just a mischievous fairy who saw the heroines wandering at the Bamboo Forest and tried to scare them. But she was easily defeated, so she escaped.
Shining Shooting Star- Koreirei's Profile
Ability: Manipulating flames
A fairy commonly seen on summer days. She likes using her flames to scare humans visiting the willow grove, but she isn't very powerful on her own, and only has enough to play pranks.
This time, while she was scaring humans passing by as usual, she ended up being harshly dealt with instead, so she ran off sulking.

Ability: Manipulating plant growth and maturation

In an Eastern country, a long time ago, a scholar saved a very young willow tree from a logger's axe. After eventually becoming a youkai, to repay the scholar for saving her life, she concealed her identity and married into his family.
However, their happy life barely lasted a few years. One morning, she suddenly told the scholar that she would die very soon, and urged him not to miss her. Her willow tree, more a thousand miles away, had been cut down, and she disappeared right in front of him.
The scholar was struck with grief. He never learnt of her true identity.
But Seiryuu didn't truly die, because thanks to her desire for life, a new shoot grew from the felled willow tree the next year, and in a few years, it grew and matured into a large willow tree once more.
Sadly, when she finally became a youkai again, more than a hundred years had passed, so long that even the longest-lived humans would have passed away.
Seiryuu never once made contact with human society again, and thus, after another thousand years or so, once all the humans and youkai had long forgotten about her existence, she passed into Gensokyo.
Kage Mimeima (魅明魔 影 Mimeima Kage) is the stage 4 boss. She's a tsukumogami and familiar of the Momosame sisters.

Ability: Manipulating reflections
A mirror of unknown origin. Many different beautiful and expensive gems are embedded in it, making it worth a fortune.
After being passed from owner to owner within high society for several hundred years, it was eventually hidden away by a wealthy man in his secret vault. Perhaps this rich person had far too much money, for he owned many, many treasures, and thus ended up neglecting this particular mirror and its unmatched beauty.
A year passed. Two years passed. Hundreds of years passed. The wealthy man had long since passed on, but his secret vault continued to lie undiscovered.
The beautiful mirror had become completely covered in dust, and riddled with cobwebs. It was once loved so much that one could not bear to part with it, yet now lay forgotten in the corner of a place whose existence no one was aware of. Her suffering caused her to finally become a tsukumogami harbouring a hatred for humans.
Many years later, the vault was reopened by none other than the Momosame sisters. They gave her a new life. They allowed her to live with them, and hid her true identity from their parents. They treated her as a human, helping her and showering her with care. They viewed her as if she were their sister.
Touched, she relinquished her hatred for humans and agreed to live within the human society, as well as to use her strength to help the Momosame clan.
The secret prayer art this time required her abilities, thus she agreed to help without any hesitation.

Shining Shooting Star - Rakukun Momosame's Profile
Ability: Summoning the Star God and praying for the Star God's blessings
The human responsible for bearing the lives of all her clan members since her birth, and the eldest daughter of the Momosame household.
Several thousand years ago in the age of savagery, it was not uncommon for humans to wind up as prey for youkai. Just as birds ate bugs, and large fish ate smaller ones, the laws of nature were manifested in a strict and orderly manner.
In order to prevent themselves from being killed, the surviving humans gathered and resisted the threat of the youkai together. Thus, the villages of ancient times were formed.
However, despite the humans' unity, their combined strength was still incomparable to the destructive, barbaric and predatory youkai.
Humans were simply too insignificant. In their despair, they turned to the gods. Thus, in response to the prayers of the surviving humans, the Star God descended.
The Star God agreed to help the humans prevent themselves from being preyed on by the youkai.
The Star God used the light of the stars to disperse the darkness.
The Star God used starbursts to annihilate the youkai.
The Star God used the power of the stars to erect a barrier.
Ever since then, humans no longer feared youkai. But as a price for using divine powers to change the laws of nature, each time the Star God was summoned, humans' lifespans would be shortened.
As the one practising the Star God's rituals, Rakukun Momosame knew all this. After few thousand years, the villages that once worshipped the Star God almost no longer needed to summon her again; likewise, the villagers' lifespans were no longer affected. Today, the Momosame household is responsible for these prayers.
As the eldest daughter, since she was born, it was decided that she would be the inheritor of the secret prayer arts. Starting from a young age, she was required to undergo hard work and training each day. Her younger sister Rakuki saw all this clearly.
Although her life was tough, being able to live with her parents and sister was something for which she could not be more fortunate, Rakukun thought.
But the natural disaster that descended upon them destroyed everything. While everyone was asleep, rocks and mud roared down in large quantities and reduced the entire village into rubble in the blink of an eye. Even with the threat of youkai now absent, humans were still powerless against natural disasters.
The one who saved the two sisters was the tsukumogami who was living with them, Kage Mimeima. With no other relatives, everyone else assumed they too were buried alive under the landslide.
Thus, they entered Gensokyo. The pain of losing her loved ones only made Rakukun more determined. This time, she planned to conduct a great prayer ritual to summon the Star God once again, to use the power of the gods to resurrect the dead villagers.
But in doing this, there was a very real possibility of her losing her entire lifespan. With regards to this, Kage and her sister were wholly unaware.

Shining Shooting Star - Tensei Muriya's Profile
|Species: Star god|
Ability: Fulfilling wishes
Humans enjoy wishing upon shooting stars whenever they streak across the sky. The power of the Star God makes these wishes come true.
However, each shooting star that streaks across the sky also represents its passing. The cost of fulfilling a wish is that part of the the lifespan of the one praying will be distributed to the vanishing shooting star. The Star God isn't absorbing life force, but rather converting it into a divine power that can manifest miracles. Because of all this, the people's faith in the Star God dwindled.
Humans seem to have forgotten the legend of the Star God providing assistance to humans several thousand years ago. Back then, of what use were rain gods and harvest gods, especially in the face of floods, tsunamis and other natural disasters?
One day, a landslide struck, causing the very last village that still remained faithful to the Star God to be wiped out. Thus, the Star God, too, entered Gensokyo.
None of this particularly mattered to Tensei, though, as since she wasn't a manifestation of faith, on the contrary, not having any followers gave her even more freedom to relax. Since she generally has nothing to do on most days, she can be found roaming Gensokyo, drinking sake and chatting.
Tens of thousands of years ago, even before the first villages came into existence, perhaps so long ago that even Tensei herself cannot remember, back when she was human... She studied astrology, gained the power of the stars, and ultimately used it to help humanity. Unfortunately, even so, the power she held then was still far too insignificant.
Unable to attain stronger powers, Tensei watched as the youkai hunted and humans were preyed on; she saw countless humans die before her eyes.
Her mother was shredded to pieces by a horde of youkai.
Her father fled to protect himself, but was killed by the youkai anyway.
For tens of thousands of years, humans lived in such a state of constant chaos.
Tensei called upon the humans to unite, to follow her. She used what little power of the stars that she held to disperse the darkness and to chase away a small group of weaker but still deadly monsters. Gradually, the people began to trust in her and her plans.
After recognising the limitations of her own powers, Tensei organised the humans to unite, surround and annihilate the youkai. To take the initiative in attacking the youkai, rather than wait to be hunted by them as food. Slowly, the ranks of her followers grew, and people began to have faith in her. They believed that she was an emissary sent by the gods.
The humans had faith that she was a Star God. Finally, Tensei attained godhood, and became a living god. She converted her powers gained through faith into that of divine miracles.
She conferred divine arts, responded to prayers and answered questions. She forsook her physical form and her humanity, and ultimately ascended to become a true Star God.
After that, tens of thousands of years passed once more.
When the heroines met Tensei who had descended in response to the prayer ritual, they quickly recited their wishes to her once they realised she was a Star God. Tensei was infuriated at the humans before her not valuing their own lifespans. Thus, she decided to teach them a lesson on the value of life.

Shining Shooting Star - Rika Kirigakure's Profile
Ability: Manipulating the beauties of nature (wind, flowers, snow and moon)
A hermit originating from an Eastern country that arrived from the Hermit World. Originally, Rika was an as-yet-unmarried daughter from a rich family, but she grew fond of a particularly exceptional scholar. Although her family opposed her relationship, she persisted in her decision.
She liked his original and different way of thinking. Yet when she confessed her feelings towards him, she was informed:
"The person I once loved the most has already left me, and from that moment on, I have no longer been able to love anyone else, as my heart only belongs to one person. Furthermore, I will become a hermit soon, and gain an almost unlimited lifespan. Because of this, a relationship between us cannot possibly work out."
Several days later, the clouds grew overcast, lightning flashed and thunder roared. The scholar had become a hermit, and had left her behind. Rika was extremely unsatisfied at being rejected, but she did not give up on her intention. Thus, she decided to begin her training in the hermit arts to pursue the scholar to wherever he had departed to.
To her surprise, her family wholly supported their daughter's decision to train to become a hermit, and did their utmost to help her in her quest.
The difficulty of training to become a hermit was something she did not expect. The mists and morning dew served as her only nourishment. There were many occasions where she wanted to give up, but the thought of meeting him again constantly remained within her mind.
Finally, one day, her endless training reached an endpoint. As she ascended the ladder of clouds, the mists parted, and she was surrounded by hundreds of birds. And at the other end of the ladder:
The Hermit World with its flowers in full bloom.
As well as the scholar, coming forward to receive her.
And after that, many centuries passed.
The Hermit World:
Rika: "Did you get the news I sent you?"
Rika: "Well? Aren't you going? Now, she's in Gensokyo."
"I know that."
Rika: "Then, why?"
"Don't you think that with all that's happened up till now, there's no point in seeing her again? Or do you really want to watch me go looking for her?"
Rika: "Hehehe~ since you're not going, then I'll be the one going to Gensokyo instead~"
Rika: "Just take it that I'm going there on a vacation~"
"You'll probably cause yet another issue there if you go."
Rika: "Ayaya, I'll be careful this time."
"Fine, do whatever you want..."
