Shinto (神道, lit. "Way of the Gods"), also called the Anglicised Shintoism, is the native Japanese religion. While the name Shinto has only existed from around 500 BCE, the belief system has existed as a nameless ancient religion for thousands of years, passed down orally. Shinto is a polytheistic religion with an array of gods known as the Yaoyorozu no Kami, and like most other ancient religions, it lacks a founder. Shinto, along with Buddhism, are the two major religions of Japan. Shintoism has only made minor expansion outside Japan, likely because it is a nationalistic religion in its purest form.

Shinto in Touhou

Shinto appears to be the primary religion in the Touhou Project. In the outside world, primarily in the Lunar Capital, the Yaoyorozu no Kami appear highly prolific. However, while major Shinto gods like Amaterasu Oomikami appear in stable conditions, some like Kanako Yasaka are forced out of the outside world and into Gensokyo as science advances and faith from the humans shift elsewhere.[1]

Shinto avoids the concept of death as it is believed to be impure. This is seen among gods like Suwako Moriya who state it as such in Touhou Hisoutensoku.[2]

Shinto in Seihou

Shintoism holds very little aspects in the Seihou Project since it mostly contains science and advanced technology in the future. Currently, Shintoism is only based around Hirano Sakurasaki with Gyoku and her shrine somewhere on Earth. It's unknown how popular Shintoism is and how many followers Hirano has.

Even though faith and entreatment are different things. Humans, in their independence, lost the need for faith. Actually, that's not true. Even now, they have faith deep within their hearts. People believe in the news, brands, companies, and friends. The object of their faith has merely shifted closer. If you're a god who wishes to regain faith from humans... try setting your pride aside and being friendly with them."
