Shoot the Bullet/Characters
This article lists all the characters that appear in Shoot the Bullet.
There is only one playable character, Aya Shameimaru, who does not shoot any danmaku. Instead, she takes pictures to clear the opponent's danmaku. The idea of a photography game with danmaku had been in ZUN's mind since Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. However, at the time the idea did not work out very well and there wasn't a suitable character for it. In Phantasmagoria of Flower View, Aya Shameimaru was created, who is a tengu reporter. She was perfect for such a game, and ZUN started working on it.
The bosses of Shoot the Bullet are all bosses appearing in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil to Phantasmagoria of Flower View. Some bosses were left out, like the Prismriver Sisters and Yuuka Kazami. Bosses are encountered in levels that relatively correspond to the stage they appeared in within their debut games, so bosses who debuted in earlier stages like Rumia or Cirno appear in levels 1 and 2, while characters debuting later in their games like Eirin Yagokoro and Eiki Shiki appear at levels 9 and 10. In Level Ex, the bosses for the Extra Stages from the first four games appear within it.
There is one character that did not appear in one of the main games, but rather in the fighting game spin off Immaterial and Missing Power, which is Suika Ibuki. This is also the first game where none of the main characters appear at all. They only appear in the Special Story of the afterword and Marisa's face appears as the game icon.

Notes
- ↑ Kirisute gomen is the right of a samurai to cut down an impolite person. This privilege was rarely invoked, as its use was heavily scrutinized, and the samurai would lose his title and home if he was found to have misused it.
- ↑ Edokko is someone who was born and raised in Tokyo. Edo is an older name for Tokyo. Edokkos use vulgar language, but they are loyal and compassionate.
