Fragment of Phantasy

Vampires are an important element in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.

No, the existence of vampires isn't all that important in terms of the game itself...
Though, vampires are still a catchy topic, so let's break it down here.

The vampire is a boss character in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, and vampires are now such a major youkai that they share a position alongside zombies as representatives of the western world. The kanji that make up the term "vampire" are "blood", "suck", and "oni". But of course, vampires are not the only blood-sucking apparition to exist. Let's look at a few typical examples.
Lamia (Greece): Sucks the blood of some children and devours other children.
Empusa (Greece): A female mantis monster who sucks the blood of sleeping men while showing them nightmares.
Kali (India): The alter ego of a goddess who, in a battle with an enemy who crafted her from the goddess's bloodshed, managed to defeat him by sucking all of his blood.
Ghoul (Arabia): Devours children and human corpses.
Jiangshi (China): A corpse that moves around at night. They cut off the heads of righteous and wicked people alike and drink their blood. Those who are bitten or injured by Jiangshi become Jiangshi themself.
Kappa (Japan): Extracts internal organs and drinks blood from the butthole. They also extract the shirikodama from the same area.
Since there's no end to the amount of these creatures, I'll end it here. (Though I will be sure to leave a story about why the Kappa are so particular about butts).
Looking at these traditions, it seems that "blood"—the very lifeforce of humans—is a source of faith and mystery for the existence of blood-sucking monsters, and in turn, traditions that seek/value them arose. A typical example of this are rituals involving "sacrifices". Blood appears as a key item in the Shamanistic belief system, in which the lifeblood of a human being (or livestock, as substitute) is offered for prayer to someone or something in order to obtain an oracle.
Vampires as folkloric hybrids
The tradition of vampires as resurrected corpses was brought up in ancient Romania as a result of mixing together various factors—such as plagues, religions, etc.—together with such primitive faiths...this is the historical context that has been postulated thus far. This is because, location-wise, it's not too far from the more civilized areas, so that caused more people to travel to and from the area. At greater distances, different cultures will be established from developing urban areas, and each will eventually mix with the other.

Indigenous beliefs are trampled by the influx of new religions with developed bureaucratic systems, and friction ensues as a result. Furthermore, as human traffic arises, the spread of germs becomes increasingly common. The characteristics of modern-day vampires, such as "anyone who's killed/has their blood sucked by a vampire becomes a vampire themself", are probably not unrelated to epidemics and the like. However, other characteristics, such as eternal youth or the ability to transform into a bat, were gradually added by regional and historical factors, and those who are interested should look into them.

In many parts of the world, the impact of Christianity being introduced to areas that were not originally Christian-dominated is immeasurable. Demonizing the native gods of each region, rewriting their lifestyles and moral values, the list goes on and on. Such influences naturally have a great impact on beings of fantasy. For example, there are many vampires who are weak against many things, but have you ever thought about why that may be the case? And have you ever wondered why the cross is among those weaknesses?

The "weak against crosses" thing is the shortened version; In reality, it's "weak against crosses that are held above the heads of the faithful". In other words, a cross being aimed by a non-believer will have absolutely no effect on a vampire. Basically, it's not the cross itself that's remarkable, but the heart of the person holding said cross...So, what is it that's being regarded here? Is it the cross? The belief? The belief in what? What an interesting aspect.

The Vampire Boom
In this way, vampires were able to spread from Eastern Europe, but their visual image was not standardized at the outset. In the 21st century, the first visual that'd come to mind when someone says "vampire" is a cloaked gentleman with his fangs on a woman's neck, feeding on her lifeblood...Though, this is probably a little too old-fashioned for the younger generation by now. We'll proceed on that assumption for the time being, but there are two major keywords that are necessary for this concept to have become ingrained in many people's minds.
Dracula" by Bram Stoker (1897)
Dracula" the movie (1931)[1]
"Isn't 'Dracula' the name of a vampire?", the idea of "Dracula = Vampire" had become quite famous thanks to Bram's novel. The novel, based on Romanian folklore and set in modern times ("modern times" being England in the late 19th century at the time it was written), is about Count Dracula, a fellow from Transylvania who had come to England in search of prey.
Since Count Dracula is, well, a count, he is therefore portrayed in the classic gentlemanly style. The novel had been a smash hit, and it was made an even bigger hit after it had been screened as a "movie", which was then emerging as the new king of entertainment. Thus, the visual image of Dracula as a gentleman in a cloak had become a firm one. The "Dracula" novel had been a long-running stage hit and a Broadway success before the film adaptation, but the image's propagation was accelerated by the fact that it was launched as a film project at the cutting edge of technology, and as a talkie rather than a silent film. It was screened in New York in February 1931 and released in Japan in October of the same year, so it must have been seen by more people than it was on stage. And naturally, since it was a big commercial hit, sequels were made, and many similar works were produced. The visual image continues to be transmitted at a rapid pace.
Incidentally, there were movies about vampires before "Dracula", but the copyright holder apparently did not give permission to make a movie based on "Dracula", so "movies about vampires" were made with slightly altered content, and the visual images of these vampires were not consistent among the movies, with some being similar and others being different. It also seems that it was "Horror of Dracula" (1958), which was considered a remake of the 1931 "Dracula", that really established the "fang-bearing" image.
The light and dark brought about by the Industrial Revolution
Even though "Dracula" was not the first vampire novel, this genre gradually began to surface in the early 19th century. As many of you wise readers may be aware, the novel's popularity would not have been possible without letterpress printing technology, and it goes without saying that "cinema" is also a modern invention. The "vampire craze" wouldn't have been possible without the Industrial Revolution. But again, this is only the technical part of the equation, on the surface. In other words, the fact that it is now possible to spread the word is not the same as the fact that it spread to many people. When there is rapid societal process in science and technology, the occult often becomes popular and influential in reaction to such advances.

During the late 18th and 19th centuries, various industries had developed to the point that they were called "revolutions", and I wonder if it wouldn't be at least somewhat intrinsically appealing to imagine a story about a vampire (and an old aristocrat at that!), whose nature is the exact opposite of that of technology, becoming very popular with the help of technology at the end of the 19th century.

Concerning Duke Țepeș
Finally, I'd like to conclude this manuscript by mentioning another vampire-related celebrity. This'll be about Vlad Tepes, who's mentioned in the name of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil's stage 6 theme. He was a 15th-century monarch who ruled the southern Romanian principality of Wallachia, known for his fierce battles against the Ottoman Empire that had approached from the south. He was especially famous for impaling people as a punishment to protect his territory's security, and he was one of the models for Bram's "Dracula". But the image of "Vlad was a vampire" is little more than a rumor these days.

To start off with, impalement was not a particularly unusual punishment at the time. This was true for both Christian and Muslim countries. Furthermore—and this is the most important cause—Hungary, which was Wallachia's neighbor at the time, was under pressure to send a crusade to the region due to being a Christian country in Eastern Europe, but did not want to do so because of its own political instability and unwillingness to bear the cost of war. So, believe it or not, they captured and arrested the Wallachian monarch Vlad, who was still putting up a good fight, on trumped-up charges of collaborating with the Ottoman Empire. To top it all off, they fabricated and disseminated false stories throughout the country about Vlad's cruelty and indiscriminate killing of people, and that he held dinner parties using the flesh and blood of the people he killed. This imprisonment evidently continued until Vlad married the Hungarian king's younger sister and converted to Catholicism.

In this way, it seems as if impaling...was not an act of brutality, but the act of a monarch who worked hard to protect his country and was poured to posterity in the opposite image, even to the point of being portrayed as a cruel and inhumane vampire. But these days, it is easy to find that this is also a rumor with enough research, so in a sense, one might say that the Vampire Vlad trope has passed into fantasy.
