Fragment of Phantasy

Fragment of Phantasy 3

In Perfect Cherry Blossom, we saw a place outside Gensokyo, in the form of the Netherworld.

Imperishable Night introduced another, in the Lunar Capital.
We will be examining the world that spreads out from these two.

The final boss of Imperishable Night, Kaguya Houraisan, is based on someone that any Japanese person would have heard of. Princess Kaguya, heroine of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, said to be the oldest written work of fiction not only in Japan but in the world. More recently, you might have seen her in a certain cell phone company’s advertisements. If you look at her name and spell cards, this will be clear right away. A less obvious one is Eirin Yagokoro, the other stage 6 boss. But as far as shaping the Touhou Project’s setting is concerned, Eirin might be more important than Kaguya. This makes more sense when you consider what source Eirin was shaped around.
Ancient - but how ancient?
The hints concerning Eirin are in her name, and her dialogue with the Magic Team - Marisa and Alice - when they meet in stage 5.
:"It looks like the two of you
are using a copy of an ancient power.
A chaotic power, from the time before humans were around.
Those were the days.
I wonder if special powers should be patentable."
A time before humans were around. Just what could she be referring to? Think about her name, and it starts to come together.
Yagokoro is the name of a Japanese god. In the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, he is referred to as Omoikane-no-Kami, and in Kujiki, as a god of wisdom named Yagokoro-Omoikane-no-Kami. Perfect Cherry Blossom was full of Japanese-style ghosts, and references to Saigyou, which quickly expands into Japanese folklore.
Gods of Japan
Japan’s view of divinity can be seen in the phrase ‘eight million gods’. This is of course to be read not literally, but as the kanji for ‘Yao-yorozu’, meaning ‘many’, or ‘all things’. In other words, there is a god in everything. Particularly famous ones become that way because they have well-known stories of their deeds, or have famous shrines dedicated to them. From here on, various names will be abbreviated.
Some major examples include Izanami and Izanagi from the genesis legend of Japan. Amaterasu, synonymous with the sun, and known for her tale of hiding away in Ama-no-Iwato. Susanoo, her violent and unruly younger brother. And then there are cases like Inari, where the shrine is famous, but the actual god it’s dedicated to, Uka-no-Mitama, is more unknown. (Though it’s true that in Buddhist temples they venerate the fox herself as ḍākinī.) The most famous episode regarding Omoikane would have to be the one concerning Ama-no-Iwato. He appears as the god of intelligence, arriving to offer advice on how to get Amaterasu to stop hiding in Ama-no-Iwato.
It’s only a hunch, but I suspect that outside of experts, people assume Izanami and Izanagi are the oldest gods. Apart from their fame, they are involved in the Kuniumi legend - that is, the creation of the archipelago, and a genesis story - which would create an impression of their being the first gods. But there are gods that existed even before these two... However, since the story varies depending on the text, from here on we will proceed according to the Kojiki’s version.
Kotoamatsukami and Kamiyonanayo
According to the Kojiki, Izanagi and Izanami are in the twelfth generation of gods. Of course, being older doesn’t make you better or more important, but some people will surely be thinking “wait, a whole twelve?” The first are the three gods that appeared at the beginning, that is, when the world was first created.
Kamimusubi
Next came Umaashikabihigokochi and Amenotokotachi, forming the five pillars. Even among the Amatsukami, they are referred to as a special group, the Kotoamatsukami (meaning ‘separate’ or ‘apart’ Amatsukami). The Kamiyonanayo (seven generations of gods) comes next, making twelve, including Izanagi and Izanami (note that Nihon Shoki claims the Kamiyonanayo are the ones who appeared at creation). This is the reason for placing Izanagi and Izanami as twelfth.
And now we finally come back to Eirin. This is because of a theory claiming that Omoikane is the child of Takamimusubi, the second of the Kotoamatsukami. So speaking in terms of generations, he may be older than Izanagi and Izanami. However, a god’s lifespan is very long, and Kotoamatsukami in particular are sometimes said to number in the hundreds of millions. So being in a separate generation doesn’t definitively say they were born first. However, we know that humans have existed for at least 65 million years, and so Eirin’s lines lend some weight to this.
Types of gods
There’s something we have to go over before talking any further about the gods: Amatsukami and Kunitsukami. This refers to a division of the gods appearing in Japanese mythology. I feel like it might have already come up in this magazine, but if so, it’s worth repeating.
Amatsukami
Gods who live in, or descended from Takamagahara.
Kunitsukami
Gods who lived in Ashihara no Nakatsukuni before the Amatsukami descended.
Takamagahara
Where the gods have lived since the creation of heaven and earth. Ama-no-Iwato is also in Takamagahara.
Ashihara-no-Nakatsukuni
The world existing between Takamagahara and Yomi. Japan.
Yomi
The land of the dead. Said to be connected to Ashihara-no-Nakatsukuni.
As a child of the Kotoamatsukami, Omoikane would obviously be Amatsukami (and the same can be assumed of Eirin). According to Silent Sinner In Blue, Eirin lent her strength to the creation of the Lunar Capital, which was founded by Tsukuyomi and her family after they grew tired of earth’s impurity. In other words, the population of the lunar capital is mostly Amatsukami. And rabbits. It’s unclear if Kaguya is a god or not. Watatsuki no Toyohime and Yorihime, key characters in the same story, are both Amatsukami. They are based on the sister goddesses Toyotamahime and Tamayorihime.
According to some theories, Omoikane is not only the child of Takamimusubi, but a god of Tokoyo (lit. eternal world). Tokoyo refers to the world of the dead, and so this also ties in with the quiet, sterile image of the lunar capital.
What about the gods left on earth?
Looked at this way, it looks like the gods have all abandoned the earth, including Gensokyo, and left for the moon. Not everyone, of course. There are many gods who always lived on the earth. The Kunitsukami. Imperishable Night only served to connect the world of the gods and Touhou’s setting, but two games later, the Kunitsukami make an appearance. That is, in Mountain of Faith. Since discussing Mountain of Faith would take up the remainder of the page, let’s move on for now. In Double Dealing Character, the final boss is Shinmyoumaru Sukuna, a descendant of Issun-Boushi. But judging by the name, she could be imagined as a descendant of Sukunahikona, a god who served to create Japan together with one of the central Kunitsukami, Ookuninushi. From Mountain of Faith on, both Kunitsukami and Amatsukami can appear at the same time, usually leading to a slightly tense situation. In Touhou Hisoutensoku, Suwako says something to the effect of “I heard there are a lot of gods in Eientei”. “A lot” might seem strange when there aren’t even that many people there, but at least one of them must be Eirin. And of course, Reisen says to Suwako that “No matter how many times you try to eliminate them, The native gods won't run out. That's what my master said.” There’s only one person Reisen would call ‘master’.
However, after Mountain of Faith the series hasn’t particularly focused on clashes between Kunitsukami and Amatsukami, so it might be best left as a little spice to keep in mind.
