Strange Creators of Outer World/Introduction of Previous Works/Imperishable Night/Overview
|Introduction of Previous Works 3
|"Tonight's insanity-filled danmaku will surely traumatize that young lady over there."
The youkai, sensitively aware of the full moon incident,
|Humans and youkai have stopped the night――
|In the summer of 2005, just one year after the distribution of Perfect Cherry Blossom, the full release of Imperishable Night was being handed out. It's hard to miss that many major changes had been made to the Touhou Project series during this time.
|One of these changes is the release of Curiosities of Lotus Asia, which began serialization in a commercial magazine in January 2004. This would mark the beginning of ZUN's engagement with commercial materials beyond the games, with the both the serialization of Eastern and Little Nature Deity and the publication of Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red being in 2005. Also, a doujinshi convention known as "Reitaisai", which deals solely with the release of derivative works for Touhou Project, was held in April 2004. The first time, it was held by renting out a large part of an exhibition hall known as "Ota City Industrial Plaza PiO", and it was at a scale where it was held alongside other dedicated conventions running simultaneously. However, this system has since been changed due to there being such a large amount of visitors at the time. And with this convention came the announcement of Immaterial & Missing Power, which was the first entry to be produced in collaboration with Twilight Frontier. This was a sign that the influence brought by the previous two works had been gradually expanding.
|In terms of this game's system, the learning curve for new danmaku patterns had been lowered, and a practice mode dedicated to individual spellcards had been included as well. And beyond deepening the gameplay, the two-person team system established for the playable cast also expands upon the worldview and characters from the viewer's perspective, which served as an opportunity to spread the series to those who never played the games.
|Reimu & Yukari
|Marisa & Alice
|Sakuya & Remilia
|Youmu & Yuyuko
Let's start with warm-ups. To use both of the available shots and bombs, you must get used to swapping between the human character in unfocused mode and the youkai character in focused mode. Also, there's a long input window for bullet-clearing bombs.
An insect youkai with the ability to manipulate other insects.
|A simple passerby who got shot down, she is truly a summer bug flying into a fire.
In this work, you will be unable to get the good ending if you clear the game with a poor performance. That's why you've got to learn to properly clear the game during the earlier stages.
Has the ability to drive people mad with her songs. The songs themselves aren't what cause night-blindness.
|Rather, the night-blindness is one of Mystia's own abilities.
Here, you battle against Keine, who's been trying to protect the Human Village. No matter how you look at it, the main character is the villain in this stage. The boss spellcards will get tougher from this point onward, so be careful.
A therianthrope with the ability to eat (destroy) and create history.
|She's friendly to humans, and works as an elementary school teacher in the Human Village.
While flying through the Bamboo Forest, the two finally came across a human who had also noticed the incident. An excitingly climatic stage where the boss you fight depends on the team you play as.
|The Marisa and Alice team, and the Sakuya and Remilia team fight the Red One.
|The Reimu and Yukari team, and the Youmu and Yuyuko team fight the Black One.
There was an isolated house in the midst of the Bamboo Forest. The two went inside, having concerns of there being "someone" living within depths of the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, which was otherwise inaccessible to humans. However, their sense of balance began to feel strange as they did so. And what had emerged from within this house was...a youkai rabbit and a youkai-like rabbit.
One might argue that the game, and the true performance, started at Stage 4, but Stage 5 has its own share of challenges, so you'll want to be careful here as well. This is particularly true for Tewi's nonspells; For those without the endurance to bear them, it'd be safer to use some bombs until you're able to overcome them. If you play this stage again after clearing the game once, you'll be given a choice once you clear it.
|Reisen Udongein Inaba
A former moon rabbit with the ability to manipulate insanity.
|Even when playing on Normal difficulty, there is a considerable amount of bullets during the stage section, and Tewi's nonspells seem to be quite unpleasant, so bombing is the safer option here.
|Reisen, on the other hand, has more straightforward bullet patterns...or so it would seem.
|Once she makes her bullets disappear, their collision detection disappears with them.
The boss stage goes on as usual. For first-time playthroughs, you'll fight Eirin regardless of your performance. This stage is characterized by bullet patterns that become difficult if you move around too much, but on the other hand, it becomes easier to dodge them if you keep movement to a minimum.
Kaguya's educator, who has the ability to make all kinds of medicine.
|Could she be stronger than Kaguya if she chose to get serious....?
Once you finally defeat Eirin, you'll be able to challenge Kaguya in the second round. If you don't play well through the first five stages, you'll end up with a disappointing ending even if you win this battle, so be careful.
An immortal with the ability to manipulate eternity and the instantaneous.
|Kaguya had been living within her residence, Eientei, almost entirely without leaving.
The incident on the night of the full moon had ended, and by the next night, the true full moon had shown its face.
"How about a test of courage?", Kaguya asked.
Something was certainly going on, but nevertheless, each of them had visited the Bamboo Forest each night alongside their partners. There was another immortal besides Kaguya waiting for them within the forest. A high-speed stage once again set in the Bamboo Forest. On this full moon, you must overcome the fierce attacks of the fairies and reach the boss. If you gather enough items along the way, the amount of lives on hand should have increased significantly. You'll want to continuously replay the stage in order to fully memorize each of the patterns.
|Fujiwara no Mokou
An immortal with the ability to never age or die.
|Keine has made her return since Stage 3, and she's gotten serious. This time, she appears in her beast form.
|You hear that there are plenty more spellcards somewhere else...
|The Last Word spellcards have the most astonishing amount of bullets in the game. Practice makes perfect!
