Fragment of Phantasy

A column dedicated to examining various legends scattered throughout the Touhou Project.
Brought to you as always by the writer Nobuyuki Shioda.
In this article we examine shrine clergy, a topic close to Sanae Kochiya as well.
On Suwa’s clergy
Among the more famous shrines, the Onbashira festival and the like make Suwa-Taisha stand out as particularly strange. It is a particularly ancient shrine, going back to the Joumon era according to one theory. It seems to have a certain unique, dark feel to it that’s quite unlike Izumo-Taisha or Ise Grand Shrine. Here we will be focusing on its clergy.
Suwa-Taisha, and where it differs
When you think of shrines, ordinarily you might think of a kannushi, but this is not a formal position. Those working at a shrine are collectively called shinshoku[1], and kannushi is a sort of nickname.
Typical shrines have a head priest as their representative; a Guuji or Miya-tsukasa. Their deputy is the Negi. There is only one of each of the above in a given shrine. Next is the Gonnegi, to which the secular equivalent would be a rank-and-file employee. This does not mean their position is low per se. There are still various staff related to the operation of the shrine, as well as miko, neither of whom are technically part of the shinshoku at all. Most shrines are understaffed in any case, so many times, the head priest is the only person at a shrine.
Compared to this arrangement, Suwa-Taisha used to be quite odd. Even Ise Grand Shrine, in some ways the most central and archetypical shrine, has some variations: For instance, there is a Saishu - a master of festivals - above even the head priest. However, Suwa-Taisha’s differences go deeper than mild structural changes or names.
The highest position in pre-Meiji Suwa clergy was the Oo-Hoori. The Nihon-Shoki makes mentions of a Hoori position, as a servant to a god existing in places other than Suwa, and a second to the Negi. Suwa’s Oo-Hoori adds the element of a living god to this. They are held to be a hereditary successor to the Suwa clan (held to be divine), and one and the same as the Great Suwa God.
Oo-Hoori and Jinchoukan
Second to the Oo-Hoori is the Jinchoukan. Until the Meiji era, the Moriya family held this position. Touhou fans might recognize this as the source of Sanae Kochiya’s belonging to the Moriya shrine and family. There is of course the connection to Suwako Moriya’s name as well.
Suwa-Taisha has an unusual structure: An upper shrine with an inner court and front court, as well as a lower shrine with spring and autumn courts, making four courts in all. Both the upper and lower shrine had their own Oo-Hoori. There were a few other positions ending in Hoori, serving their god with positions similar to that of the Gonnegi.
At least in the 7th century, it is confirmed that only the upper shrine had a Jinchoukan. This may have to do with the lower shrine being built later, even around the 12th century by one reckoning. The Jinchoukan Moriya Historical Museum holds many of the texts of the Moriya family. There, much of the Moreya shrine’s history is held in the Suwa Daimyoujin Ekotoba (Illustrated Scroll of the Great Suwa God). It details that the land of Suwa once had a ‘Moreya god’, who was defeated by the invading Takeminakata. The Moreya god then became the Jinchoukan who venerates Takeminakata. If we take this as written, it could be understood that the Jinchoukan was also the Oo-Hoori. It might have been the perception of the time that after the switch in power, the Oo-Hoori was still a living god, but as an incarnation of Takeminakata. Kanasashibe, who became the Oo-Hoori of the lower shrine, was from a family that worked as imperial servants. Perhaps because of this, the upper shrine’s Oo-Hoori was considered to be of a higher rank than that of the lower shrine.
Moriya, the core of the Suwa faith.
When you hear ‘Moriya’, some might be reminded of the ancient Mononobe clan. The head of the clan at the time of their greatest prosperity in the Asuka period was Mononobe no Moriya. Since a previous generation, they had been in conflict with the Buddhism-promoting Soga clan, and in the battle at Mount Shigi, Soga no Umako drove him to suicide.
The kanji of the Moreya god can be read as both Moreya and Moriya, which invited much speculation in the past. Among them is the theory that Takeminakata is Mononobe no Moriya. Having fallen afoul of the Yamato court, he came to Suwa, and was not able to give his real name. Certainly, Moriya’s time is over a century before the completion of the Kojiki, so this may have been added to the text during editing or in a later era. If we consider that Takeminakata is Moriya, this raises many questions about other beliefs. What happens to the Moriya mountain faith? Who does Takemikazuchi become in this scenario? Making everything line up is difficult, and leaving the realm of hypothesis may be impossible, but it’s certainly an intriguing theory.
