Mountain of Faith Interview with ZUN

"Mountain of Faith" was another fresh start for Touhou Project.
What is Mr. ZUN's own opinion on this project?
We spoke with him on various such topics, including his hometown and faith.

――

It's been 10 years since the release of Mountain of Faith, but I'd like to ask about how it got to its final state. First of all, you'd just released Shoot the Bullet at the previous winter Comiket. Had you been planning Mountain of Faith since before then?

ZUN

When Embodiment of Scarlet Devil came out, I was thinking that I'd keep making them up to Imperishable Night and then just stop. Personally, I would have been satisfied with just that. But ever since I announced EoSD, the number of fans started growing and growing. And during the production of IN, a part of me thought of it as doing a service for the fans. And then after IN was released, there were even more fans. So I changed my mind and started thinking I would make a new work. What was on my mind when I made MoF was to start fresh with a new work while also thinking about how to could keep the Touhou Project going. That's why I made the name (Fuujinroku) a reference to the first shooting game I ever made, Story of Eastern Wonderland (Fuumaroku). Content-wise I wasn't going back to the beginning, but I gave it the feeling of a new start.

――

Oh, so the title had that sort of meaning too.

ZUN

It had the image of starting from zero. It's new again, and changes the setting so it could continue on into the future. Actually, making that change, or rather having had a fresh start, has an incredible influence on my current works, since the characters from around then have had a huge effect on the popularity of my works.

――

Speaking of a fresh start, around when you announced the demo you said something along the lines of it being a "reset", which made a lot of fans worry about what was going to happen to the existing characters.

ZUN

The biggest change would be how I thought about the works themselves. Ever since MoF, the current Touhou is becoming a story of youkai and gods showing up like it's perfectly natural.

――

True, ever since then I've felt like I want a peek at what's coming in the future. But about the timing, are you saying that the fact that this was the first game you made while not working for a company wasn't a big deal?

ZUN

Hmm... it was and it wasn't... (lol). If I had to say, it was less that I made MoF because I was independent, and more that there were more fans than ever before, and the Hakurei Shrine Reitaisai (Touhou only convention) was starting up, so the scale of the whole thing kept getting bigger. I think that's also around when Nico Nico Douga officially started, so everything was perfectly timed for explosive growth. It was more like "I don't have time to be working at a company!" so I quit, or that I couldn't keep up with Touhou's growth if I didn't quit (lol). The world was moving, so I desperately did everything I could to keep up, or hitch a ride. So I didn't feel at all like I made it because I was independent. I just went with the flow and quit my job to become absorbed into Touhou.

――

The year before, you'd started planning Bougetsushou, so you had more and more non-game work too.[1]

ZUN

I remember that when my editor was proposing that we release Bougetsushou as three books running concurrently, I was told "Even if you quit your job, the money you'll make from being serialized is about the same as an entry-level salaryman." So I started thinking, ah, I'd be pretty comfortable even if I quit my job. Even if the games I made myself hadn't sold at all, I'd still be alright for a while.

――

-I-Is that so?

ZUN

Around the time of MoF, the timing was such that Touhou itself was suddenly changing regardless of what I did. So it was also the time to change myself along with it. I was thinking that I had to made a game that wouldn't lose to that change. Even now, even if I made some super-popular EoSD-2 kind of game, the lifespan of that work is already over. Most people and companies do this. They make games that give the fans everything they want, with amazing, beautiful visuals and a huge amount of content and then... disappear. Obviously the fans are happy, and that one game probably sold a ton too, but the work itself doesn't continue. As someone's who's "anti-series", that's how I've always thought.

――

Back then you said pretty firmly that "Touhou Project is not a series."

ZUN

It actually is a series though. What makes it different is that I've made a clear distinction within myself, and I've tried to only make things while conscious of that.

――

So can we take that to mean that, since since you've made work after work with slightly off-kilter tastes since IN, MoF was timed perfectly?

ZUN

I don't think the users back then took it as a given that I'd keep putting out new works, like they do now. Actually, weren't there more people who thought there'd never be anything else? People used to talk about EoSD, PCB, and IN as a trilogy, so maybe they thought I'd only release non-shooting game works, or something entirely different. But I feel like the strongest impression was that I'd never release anything else ever again.

――

Hmm? Personally, I thought you'd release more though.

ZUN

But in the end, the longer you go on, the more people lose interest in your works. And my impression was that the users both wanted something just like it's always been, but also not.

――

There's both the feeling of wanting things how they've always been, and the feeling of wanting to have our expectations betrayed.

ZUN

Well, yeah, I've kept betraying them, in the negative sense.

――

You may have gone outside our simple expectations, but haven't you provided surprises and enjoyment?

ZUN

Actually, you can put something out unchanged, but in order to keep going you change yourself. In that sense, you change from trying to make something good to trying to keep something going.

――

Since MoF, gods have appeared in addition to youkai, and gods befitting the story showed up, but when you're expanding the scope of Touhou, what kinds of things have you decided belong in Touhou?

ZUN

Going forward, I've love to expand what I can use, but if you do that then you start having too many things based on other things, and they start to overlap with other games, and it's just not interesting. You have to stick to your own individual worldview or your world and characters won't be charming. So from MoF on, I have to expand the breadth of the world under the assumption that there are gods.

――

I see.

ZUN

That's also around when I started thinking that I could do whatever I want. Until then, I'd always been conscious of the fact that I had to follow the theory, at least to some extent. But now that I had so many fans, I felt I could get away with establishing absurd settings.

――

Wow, really? So then, are Bougetsushou and MoF actually the result of that...?

ZUN

Since MoF, there've been more fans who like to analyze the works. So in that sense I think it was a success.

――

So was IN a forerunner to this?

ZUN

In the trilogy, I played the motifs straight, but it gradually came to feel like I was setting things up in the background. As more and more people started to become interested in identifying my inspirations, I thought it'd be okay to head in that direction. No, I understood that it was now okay to head in that direction.

――

True, Remilia is an extremely easy-to-understand character. And while there's that thing with Yuyuko and Saigyou, if I had to choose I'd say that spring and cherry blossoms were the main story.

ZUN

So my way of thinking changed little by little, and now, in order to draw charming characters, I deepen their backstories. Like, I think that's what's wanted?

ZUN's hometown

――

You've talked about your hometown before, but Hakuba and Suwa aren't that close. So how personally involved were you with the shrines, ZUN? Also, you wrote in your blog that your grandmother's house was in something like a "youkai village," but how involved were your relatives in this local culture?

ZUN

There were plenty of shrines nearby. Tons of uninhabited tiny shrines, but lots of normal shrines too. When I was a kid, playing at shrines was normal, like you'd stop by a shrine to play ant hell or whatever. Anyway, I was familiar with them. I would also go train at a temple every Sunday for a year. I don't know about now, but back then I was very involved. And I think that's a relatively good thing. Old customs are disappearing, and the religious atmosphere isn't as strong.

――

Did the adults ever tell you scary legends or anything?

ZUN

Hmm... I'm not sure. I feel like I heard a lot of folkloristic stuff. Like, that there were oni living near our house, or that if you went and looked you could find their handprints. We were basically in the mountains, so there were a lot of homeless...ish people staying at the shrines all over the place. But they were never there when I went, only the traces of them. Maybe they went somewhere, but they weren't there during the day. I used to think they hid themselves during the day and showed up at night. So it felt a little mysterious.

――

You see them a lot in the cities these days, like in Shinjuku or Ueno.

ZUN

Nowadays they aren't hidden, but back then, and especially in a rural area, they were something to be hidden.

――

Sounds like it'd be tougher to live in the mountains though.

ZUN

There are plenty of wild vegetables though, aren't there? Well, I don't really know. But they would come into our school during the day to get drinking water. These days they don't let outsiders into the school, but back then you could come and go freely. You could be a bear or whatever and you'd still get in. But those sorts of people don't usually come from the countryside, maybe they were streaming in from the city.

――

So they weren't at all like the so-called "hermits" then?

ZUN

I'm pretty sure they weren't, but my parents never talked about them, and I never really interacted with them either. They were mysterious beings. But if you peeked under the bridge, there were signs that they lived a pretty stable life. It wasn't like a kid's secret base or anything. They were just dirty blankets and bowls, but to me they were fascinating. Everyone always spoke as if there was an untouchable "something" down there. Nowadays, and especially in the cities, they aren't hidden so it's an unfortunate "that's just the way it is."

――

So it was like being close to a different culture. But anyway, so the nearby shrine was the Suwa shrine, right?

ZUN

The closest to my house was Suwa. But the Suwa Shrine is one of those prominent national shrines, so there are plenty of them. The most common of course are the Inari Shrines. I've often wondered why there are so many of those. Plus, our neighborhood shrine was said to be a branch of the Suwa Shrine, but people also said that "it's a rain god, so if we throw a festival it will definitely rain." But thinking back on it, was the Suwa Shrine's god really a rain god? That's how it was passed down in my hometown so that's the impression I have, but it's a mystery. Near Hakuba is a place called the Azumi Basin, where the Azumi people used to live (Editor's Note: a tribe from Japan's ancient history). The ancient Azumi people crossed the sea from near Fukuoka to live there. So even in the mountains, it's connected to the sea. In the shrines too: the Nishina Shinmei Shrine enshrines a boat, and stuff like that. So the legends about escaping from the other side, and of Takeminakata coming up Hakuba's Himekawa river, must be stories from the Azumi. And as for the place in question, the god of the Suwa Shrine is the god of the Azumi people. When the Yamato came, those Azumi who didn't submit were exterminated. I think that's what the story in the Kojiki must have been about.

――

I see. The story of Suwa is double or even triple layered, so how you interpret it is a big point. In the end, it's a place where people escaped from "the people on the other side of the mountain" to? Since there's also the story of Mononobe no Moriya.

ZUN

It's not like Japan has been unified as a single "Japan" since the distant past. The whole of Japan becoming a single nation basically started in the Meiji era. Before that, there was a strong sense that we were different countries.

――

Even the Ainu. People say that they weren't just in Hokkaido, and they they came as far south as Tohoku or North Kanto.

ZUN

Yeah, since there are a lot of places around Kanto with names derived from Ainu words.

――

Come to think of it, I hear that in the local area of the Grand Suwa Shrine, they never use the name Takeminkata, always calling the god Suwa Meijin.

ZUN

But, well, a lot people didn't know that, and even what I said earlier about the Suwa Shrine being all over the country, when I released MoF. Or maybe I should say they didn't especially care. But in a certain sense, after I released MoF, stuff about Suwa suddenly became common knowledge across the net, both among people who know Touhou and people who don't play. That's how I picture it anyway.

――

That's a bold claim, but I can't deny its influence. It's like what people overseas call the Kancolle Effect.[2]

ZUN

I think that after MoF, people's image of Suwa became something different. The internet age is a funny thing. The release of famous games and anime can rewrite our impression of things so much. Something that used to be minor gradually gets cited more and more, and someone who comes afterwards can get all that information immediately, so it becomes common knowledge. For example, there used to be this TV show called "Fountain of Trivia", but the trivia from there got picked up and spread around so much that before you know it everyone's talking like it's obvious. So I think that because of the acceleration of the era, something like Suwa can be picked up and spread in a Touhou-like way. And the starting place for that purpose is the Suwa Grand Shrine, or something like that.

――

According to the Kojiki and other works, the rebellious Takeminakata was suppressed, but in Suwa it's the opposite: Takeminakata was the invader.

ZUN

Maybe spreading that kind of story is having an effect. But personally, I'm not spreading the "truth" about anything. Just points I want people to remember. Things that aren't the truth can easily become truth through careless hypothesis.

――

But by using such complex elements, like the relationship between the gods in Touhou Project, and for example how the Heavenly Gods relate to the Earthly Gods, can also have an effect. It's in that position.

ZUN

If you dig into Japanese mythology you start to head in that direction, but obviously Touhou also has a lot of youkai who have nothing to do with Japanese myth, so the important part of the work is how to incorporate those things.

――

The stage 1 boss too, she's just a vague "god of autumn."

ZUN

I couldn't just start throwing loads of famous gods out. If I did that, it wouldn't be Touhou anymore, it'd be more like Megami Tensei or something.

――

Speaking of gods, Japan is polytheist, so if one god defeats another there are still gods. I think that's a kind worldview. If we were monotheist, then Takeminakata or Mishaguji would have to have been demons.

ZUN

Don't we assume that Japanese gods have both a good side and evil side to them (Nigimitama, Aramitama)? The evil side gives rise to curses, and the good side blessings. I think that's good. This way, no matter how the chips fall, there are always both evil gods and good gods. In monotheism, God is the Creator. He created everything, so he created the demons too, right? You have to think about stuff like that. So in that sense, it's hard to use Christianity or Islam. It's not just me, right? It's all games.

――

We don't go around killing YHWH that often.

ZUN

Pretty much only in Megaten. But it's not like you can beat up Christ or Muhammad either, right? You might as well have a fighting game with Christ vs. Muhammad. I'd like to see that. (Editor's Note: After this conversation, a game called "Fight of Gods" was released on Steam, and Son of God vs. Buddha became a reality. It disappeared a week later after complaints.)

――

(lol).

ZUN

And whenever two people hit each other YHWH comes down and soothes them, like "now now..." Don't you wanna see that?

――

Like, "play nice, for your father's sake."

ZUN

Japan isn't the only polytheist country, but sometimes I'm glad that this is in Japan. Well, not that I didn't introduce characters from Taoism or Greek myth later.

Faith Declined

Let's talk about the game. In MoF, the incident is that the culprits came to Gensokyo bringing their shrine and lake, but since you were trying to start over from the beginning, is this supposed to be a self-parody of EoSD or something?

ZUN

Setting-wise, I just wanted a lake. The image of the final stage being a lake came to me early on, so I just thought it'd be nice. I looked into a lot of shrines, and the Suwa Grand Shrine didn't have many mysteries to it. There are a ton of tiny, incomprehensible shrines. Knowing that "this shrine holds this festival to this god" doesn't tell me anything. Maybe only newer shrines have well-established histories. But I was interested in the Suwa Grand Shrine's eastern shrine, so even though I had to go all over the place, maybe that was a good opportunity.

――

Like a crash course in shrines?

ZUN

They're all over the place. Most of them enshrine war gods, so I was thinking maybe people were calling down a new god every time a dispute popped up?

――

In terms of distribution, I hear that Niigata in Nagano has an overwhelming number of them.

ZUN

Isn't Niigata the prefecture in Japan with the most shrines? If I had to guess why, it'd be because it's been a popular place for agriculture since ancient times. You ask the gods for blessings so there are a lot of shrines.

――

Yeah, but I think they're mostly war gods.

ZUN

But does simply having more shrines mean they have the same blessing? Winning any competition is an almighty blessing. And maybe, like I said earlier about the Suwa shrine near my house having a rain god, maybe it's like that in Niigata too? I couldn't tell you why it became like that, but it's plenty possible that it was just passed down that way. This sort of thing is interesting. And then, since it's a rain god, maybe its divine messenger can be a frog. Well, I think there must have been some kind of truth to it since it was passed on, but I can 't say its the fruit of my research or anything. It's just a daydream. But I think daydreams can sometimes cross over into truth.

――

To put us back on track, doesn't Sanae have a pretty catchy design? She's a former high school school/Living god/shrine maiden so I feel she's kind of overstuffed though.

ZUN

I designed her as a new protagonist. I just wanted to add more protagonists.

――

What?! When you released it, didn't you say something like "Sanae is a god so she's strong, so she fundamentally can't be playable"?

ZUN

Did I ever say that? Oh well, it's not important.

――

Oh, okay. Speaking of which, I think they teach about Mononobe no Moriya in school, but the legend that he or his family got away and survived is one of the great dreams of history.

ZUN

What they teach in school is pretty much limited to the Yamato Court, so anything outside of that doesn't get studied much. I'm sure people other than me are interested in this stuff though, that's just the kind of era it is. Should we put the Izumo Grand Shrine on notice or something? Suwa is like that too, the location of a legendary defeat. I'd like to see things like that. But we're not going to overthrow the government or anything, so it's Japan. We've come to look at it as a part of Japan.

――

But you yourself have done a good job of infusing your worldview into the world of Gensokyo. There are some people in the world who only like the winners.

ZUN

Well, I think plenty of Japanese like to root for the underdog (lol). I've made things this way since MoF, but since I changed the way I do things in MoF maybe that was a big deal. Maybe my method was to slowly put the story together, piece by piece. And while I might have even more fans now, at the time it felt like the number of Touhou fans who played MoF was completely different from the ones who played the games up to IN.

――

Until IN, your goal was only to make a game and have people play it.

ZUN

The characters and settings were just to make the shooting more fun. MoF was the title when I started to think about continuing to make Touhou for a long time, so I changed my goal into expanding Touhou.

――

Afterward, there have been a number of works with "faith" as a theme, but did you predict that?

ZUN

Of course. I'd felt that fad was coming, since a little while before I released MoF the word "pilgrimage" was coming into common use among otaku.

――

That was probably from Lucky Star or something.

ZUN

Well, I picked the word "pilgrimage", but the timing was such that faith was declining among otaku. I think this was more the BBS 2chan than Nico Nico Douga, but they would call amazing people on the BBS "god" and stuff. Faith had fallen to that level. So thought "I should release my own faith game!" while everyone was caught up in that.

――

I see!

ZUN

Back then, and even today, fans are called "the faithful" but at the time people were using it in a pretty mocking way. Of course nowadays people will even call themselves that. But it was that kind of era, so I made the game thinking that faith would seem hilarious for a while, and I was right. Nowadays maybe people use these words like its perfectly normal, but I think at the time intentionally putting it like that was more of a diss, or if you said it about yourself, a kind of self-deprecation. Like, "this is a religion." That's the kind of environment we starting using "pilgrimage" in, but last year it ended up as a popular phrase (lol).

――

Ah, yeah, like in "Your Name"...

ZUN

I feel like I'm seeing the punchline of a 10 year long joke.

――

I hear that a shrine to Amatsumikaboshi shows up in "Your Name." I didn't see it though.

ZUN

I didn't either. This connects back to our earlier topic, but when Amatsumikaboshi showed up in the "Persona" series, it then became famous on the net, so maybe we've increased our pool of knowledge? You thought were were using a minor god at the time, but it's almost like someone's taking that as a challenge. And just like that, more and more things become common knowledge. Looking back, MoF was formed by that era. Faith was becoming a joke, and I'm sure that will continue. People were saying "Touhou is a Religion."

――

I remember that (lol). (Editor's Note: The copypasta "Fate is Literature, Air is Art, Clannad is Life" first appeared on 2chan in 07, but there are signs that "Touhou is a Religion" was already being used as early as 06.)

ZUN

I make that joke myself. When I wrote down MoF's game systems and read them out loud, it sounded hilarious. Like, "Faith decreases over time" or "Faith points" (lol). Just the shape of the kanji started to look funny. Of course, making the contents of the game interesting was a completely different matter, but it was filled with that Touhou-esque black humor.

――

Uwah...

ZUN

At the time, the way things spread across the net was completely different from how it is now, so I can hardly remember. There wasn't anything like the Buzz[3] yet, so things happened more slowly and steadily. Otaku took to Twitter after 08, so that was another time of change. When I think about like that, maybe there are more places of faith now. The rate at which they're growing is increasing too, so maybe it's become casual religion.

――

The phrase "godly handling" has gotten popular. But the true meaning of that is...[4]

ZUN

Getting struck by lightning, or turning people into pillars of salt. Get them a little angry and it's like "you were that pissed?!" That's how gods handle people.

――

So what thoughts do you personally have about faith and religion?

ZUN

There are a lot of people these days who treat the law as absolute, but when you look into why the laws were written it's often really stupid. Like, it's easy enough to understand why you'd ban marijuana, but when you ask why marijuana is no good but alcohol is OK it just doesn't make any sense. That's just how the law is, but I think it's obvious that when society is like that then religion, which makes even more rules, wouldn't do well at all. So the modern tendency to make religion "the enemy" is the fault of the law. When there are both religious precepts and national laws, they're going to conflict somewhere.

――

Have you felt differently about shrines after moving away from your hometown for university?

ZUN

Hmm, not especially. If anything, I felt there were more shrines in Tokyo than I expected. Like no matter where you go, there are small shrines everywhere. Obviously there are hardly any large-scale tourist trap ones, like there are out in the countryside, but even in the city, aren't there quite a few stuck between buildings or hidden on rooftops?

――

Looking back, I get the impression that you had a very clear idea of what to do with MoF, and stuck pretty closely to your designs. And it's like the Touhou we all see today was redesigned here.

ZUN

But I feel like if I'd stuck with what I was doing before, then Touhou wouldn't have spread like this. That particular timing is a big part of why there are so many fans.

――

If I had to describe the previous trilogy, I'd say it was "more chuunibyou."

ZUN

They were easier to understand games. Although I think they're even more chuunibyou now (lol). And as for the game parts, the systems had already been perfected, so I feel like there isn't anything to say. I mean, in the end it's a shooting game.

――

Is there anything about it you can say now that 10 years have passed?

ZUN

I haven't really done anything for MoF since then, so pretty much just "wow, it's been 10 years." Although in some ways it also feels like "it's only been 10 years?" It was an exciting time with the dawning of Nico Nico Douga, and I didn't know what would happen. I mean, actually, all sorts of things happened since then. Until then, the core fans who were crazy about Touhou were almost a cult-like subculture around the games, but after MoF there are more fans who know of Touhou through its derivative works, so ultimately they're the ones with the power. There were also more people going around aggressively proselytizing, like "this is what we want to do." The timing was just perfect. It's been going on like this every year for 10 years, but that's why when you ask how I feel about it there's nothing to say.
