PCB Stage Review

「妖々夢」のステージとボスを識者の方々に振り返ってもらったぞ。咲夜さんは「紅魔郷」から続投。

Experts look back on the stages and bosses from Perfect Cherry Blossom. Sakuya from EoSD remains in the lineup.

博麗霊夢 :博麗神社の巫女さん。頭が春。

Reimu Hakurei: Maiden of the Hakurei Shrine. Has Spring on the brain.

霧雨魔理沙 :普通の魔法使い。寒がり。

Marisa Kirisame: Ordinary Magician. Sensitive to cold weather.

十六夜咲夜 :紅魔館の瀟洒なメイド。お嬢様のお遣い。

こいつがいるから寒いのかと思ったけど、しばいても変わらなかったのよね。働き損だわ。道中? なにかいたっけ。

1: I thought she was making it cold, but nothing changed after I took her down. A lot of pointless effort. And I think there was some other nuisance, too...

どうも寒いのは苦手だ。厚着をすればいいだけなんだがな。寒さにはしゃぐ妖精がうっとうしかったぜ。

1: Thank the stars for heavy clothing; me and the cold don't mix. That overexcited fairy wasn't helpin' either.

Sakuya


こいつらが原因というわけではないけど、冷気は出せるのよね。つかまえて、冷蔵庫と冷凍庫で使い分ければいいのかしら。

2: Neither she nor her cohort were behind the chill, although they produced it. Perhaps I should capture them for our ice box...

背景が明るい雪のステージで、ちゃんと見えるように弾を作るのが難しかったことを思い出しますね。ステージ後半になれば桜がぱーっと出て綺麗になることは最初から想定されているから、最初のステージは灰色にするしかないんです。「紅魔郷」とはちょっと違う苦労のし方をしましたね。

I remember having trouble making the bullets visible on for this stage and its bright, snowy background. I had envisioned a burst of cherry blossoms appearing in the latter half, so I could only go with gray. It gave me a slight variation in the difficulty that EoSD did.

マヨヒガのものを持ち帰ると幸運になれるんだっけ。でも幻想郷全体が、外の世界にとってマヨヒガみたいなもんだからなあ。

2: I think they say bringing something back from Mayohiga is good luck, but from the Outside World's point of view, all of Gensokyo is probably Mayohiga.

私としては、未知のアイテムを探したいんだが、そもそも目的じゃないのが残念だな。あとなにげに元気な猫又が邪魔だ。

3: I really wanted to uncover some trinkets, but that wasn't on the plate, unfortunately. And that crazy cat was a pain.

幸運になれるアイテムなんて、お嬢様が運命を変えちゃうんだから意味無いわ。ペットは御屋敷を荒らすからやめましょうかね。[1]

8: I have no need for lucky items, for my mistress can change fate itself. It feels like feeding pets should be passed on.

ZUN

1面の延長戦上といえばそうなんですが、強そうなボスを2面に持って来たかったんです。全体の設計図としては、この2面のボスをEXの中ボスに出そうとしていたので、あんまり弱そうでもよくないし。実際、攻撃も2面にしては難しいというかちょっといやらしい部分があります。

Stage 2 almost became like a slightly harder Stage 1, but I wanted a Boss with a stronger appearance since she would reappear as the mid-boss for the EX Stage and a weak boss wouldn't have worked. On the whole, it wasn't hard so much as it was slightly unpleasant in places.

この魔法莫迦は寒い中なにをほっつき歩いてたのかしら。話したいだけなら普通に話せばいいのに。異変解決中は問答無用で倒すけど。

2: Why was this silly witch wandering around in the cold? And why didn't she just say she wanted to talk? Well, since I was in the middle of investigating an incident, I beat her up anyway, no questions asked.

すごい数の人形が弾を打ってくるんだが、アリス自身はほとんど打ってこないんだよな。人形を操るのも大変だぜ。

7: She uses a ridiculous number of dolls to shoot bullets, but she herself barely fires a thing. Workin' all those dolls must be killer.

Sakuya


たくさんの人形をいっぺんに動かせたら、お掃除とかに便利かしら。でも自分で動かすのなら結局自分で働くのと一緒ね。

2: She may be useful at cleaning if she can control so many dolls at once, but even if they're the ones doing the work, it's not saving her much labor.

ZUN

今考えると「妖々夢」の1~3面はあまりまとまりがないですね(笑)。後半の部分しか考えていないことがわかっちゃう。今はともかく、当時はゲームシステムの方に気を取られていたので。あえて言うと、PC‐98時代の話をちょっとにおわせて、世界はもっと広いんだよということを見せるつもりもありました。

Thinking back on it now, the first three stages of PCB aren't all that coherent, haha. I was so fixated on the latter half of the game due to the system in place. I guess if I were to venture a statement, I was trying to bring back a little of the PC-98 feel and expand the world.

雲の上に出たから、湿った服も乾くってもんだわ。一人で出てきたり三人で出てきたりするけど、弾幕は特に変わらないわね。

3: Once I made it above the clouds, my damp clothes could dry out. The sisters may come out individually or as a group, but their danmaku doesn't change much either way.

三人で襲ってくるのは反則じゃないのか。まあアリスの人形をカウントしないから似たようなもの……か? 音楽はじっくり聴きたいぜ。

5: Isn't three-on-one against the rules? Well, maybe it's something like Alice and her dolls... I guess. I'd like to get a good listen to their music sometime.

チンドン屋さん、うちの食事会のBGMにどうかしら。でも、あまり上品さは感じないのよねぇ。お嬢様の好みではないかも。

2: Perhaps this street band can provide some dinner music, but their lack of refinement may not be to the mistress' liking.

ZUN

本当は曲のループなしで終わってちょうどボスが来るくらいのイメージだったのですが、曲が長くなっちゃって、それでステージも長く(笑)。ボスもパターンが多くて、作る側としてはボリュームがあって苦労しました。あと、いわゆるポルターガイストを、楽器をただ演奏するキャラにしたかったんですよ。

I wanted the stage music to end just as you reached the boss so it wouldn't loop, but it turned out pretty long, making the stage long in turn, haha. The bosses have a lot of patterns, so it was difficult making so many. As for the poltergeists, so-called "noisy ghosts," playing music, it was just something I wanted.

刃物を振り回すだけかと思ったら、案外ちゃんと弾幕してくるのよね。でも時間をゆっくりにするのって、サービス以外の意味あるのかしら。

5: I thought she would only swing her swords around, but she had actually danmaku to my surprise. I wonder if there was a point to her slowing down time other than giving me a break.

こいつの場合は二人……いや、半人+半妖一人なのか? 刀(物理)だけじゃなくちゃんと弾幕も出してくるから、いろいろ楽しめるな。

7: So would she count as two people or just two halves? But since she's got her swords to go with her danmaku, she made for a fun duel.

主人に仕えてるのは同じだけど、ウチのお嬢様は優秀で助かるわ。それより冥界って生きたまま行っていいのかしら。

5: She may be a servant like myself, but my mistress is far superior. It still strikes me as strange I could go to the Netherworld while still alive, however.

ZUN

4面以降は完全に幽霊ネタ解禁で、あとは霊しか出てこない。5面からは急に冥界に入って純和風になる。かなり好きなステージです。やりたいことがやれた感じがしていますね。今のゲームは何処を切ってもこのステージのような感じになっていますけれど、当時はここまでたどり着かないと、できなかった。

After Stage 4, I went crazy with the phantom theme so the only enemies were spirits. Entering the realm of the dead proper in Stage 5, I gave it a pure, oriental feel, and I think it turned out very well, like I was able to do what I wanted to do. In my games now, I could put a stage like this at any moment, but I had yet to build up to that point back then.

とぼけてみせるけど、こういう輩が一番危険なのよ。性質悪いことに退治しきれないみたいだから、とにかく懲らしめるしかないのよね。

7: She might act dumb, but her type is the most dangerous. She was too stubborn to fully exterminate, but she still needed punishment.

しばらく蝶は見たくないな。一生分を見た気がするぜ。幽々子は存在が不吉なくせにのほほんとしてるのは、ちょっとズルい。

8: I think I've seen enough butterflies for a lifetime, thank you very much. She's a crafty one, actin' all nonchalant when her very existence is a threat.

死体の癖に小うるさい。お嬢様とは別の意味で厄介な奴ね。でも、折角の春を奪ったツケはしっかり払ってもらわなくちゃ。

8: She is rather persnickety for a corpse. A different sort of lady from my mistress, but troublesome. Regardless, she had to pay the cost for stealing our long-awaited spring.

ZUN

ラスボスに関しては「紅魔郷」とあまり変わらないんですが、ボスが倒された後にもう一回攻撃があるようにしたかったんです。そうすることは、初めから決まってました。「紅魔郷」と同じように進めて、ふぅ倒したと思っていたら、という風にしたかった。コストをかけずにプレイヤーをおどろかせようとしていたわけです。

She wasn't too different from the last boss of EoSD, but I wanted to add an extra attack after you defeated her. I had that planned from the very beginning. You would progress through the game, heave a sigh of relief after beating her, then... That made it an effortless way to surprise the player.

寝ぼすけなあいつの代理とは言うけど、決まり切ったことしかできないんじゃ、勤まらないわね。でもこれだけやれる下僕が一人ぐらいいたら便利かも。

6: She said she was taking the place of Ms. Sleepyhead, but she's got nothing unusual that makes her fit for the role. But I imagine at least one hireling can be handy.

こいつが式神というのも驚きだが、こいつ自体も式神を使うというのだから二重に驚きだ。人間を超える式神も時間の問題かもな。

9: I was shocked to find out she was a shikigami, and doubly shocked when I found out she had a shikigami of her own. Seems like only a matter of time before they make a shikigami that's better than a human.

藍が紫の式神ってことは、狐自体と藍は別物なわけ? 高度過ぎてよくわからないわ。

3: If Ran is Yukari's shikigami, does that mean her fox side is separate? This is much too technical to comprehend.

ZUN

どうだったかな……Phantasmを作ることが前提だったので、Extra全体に難易度が二つあると思った方がいいのかもしれない。難しい版と、もっと難しい版と。ちょっと時間があるからといろいろ詰め込み過ぎて、逆に時間が足りなくなってしまったことを覚えています。

It's probably best to think of the Phantasm stage as being a second difficulty level for the Extra Stage. There's hard, then harder. I remember having some extra time so I put a lot of stuff into it, but then I overdid things and almost ran out of time.

うさんくささが服着て歩いてるやつよ。話も弾幕もうさんくさいし、寝てばかいるし、ほんとなんなのかしら。おまけに結界の管理なんて、仕事が被ってるのよ。

5: She's like the concept of "weird" given a frilly dress and legs. She talks about weird things, fires weird danmaku, and sleeps all the time. I'd really like to know her deal, and also why she thinks there needs to be two people managing the barrier.

能ある鷹はなんとやらと言うが、見た目と違ってとんでもないヤツだ。弾幕についても、ちょっと考え方からして違う。とにかく油断出来んな。

10: You know what they say about cats hiding their claws; she's way different from how she looks. You can even tell she doesn't think like normal from watchin' her danmaku. Basically, do NOT let down your guard around her.

こういうわけのわからない、未知で不安な奴こそ、妖怪らしい妖怪なのかもしれないわね。ま、その手の話は専門家に任せましょう。

9: Her complete incomprehensibility and the fear that stimulates as a result makes her a truly youkai-like youkai. Or is my opinion, at least. Perhaps it would be better to ask a specialist instead.

ZUN

Phantasmを出すこと、「弾幕結界」をオチにして締める事は最初から決まっていました。それまで作中で「弾幕」という言葉は使っていないんじゃないかな。「弾幕結界」は、どうやって「ぱっと見て明らかに避けられない」ものを「ネタが分かれば避けられる」ようにするかが難しかったです。

From the very start, I had planned on creating a Phantasm Stage and ending with "Danmaku Barrier." I don't really use the word "danmaku" itself all that often in the games. As for the spell card itself, making it appear impossible until you solve the puzzle was tough.
