Following Mountain of Faith are both Subterranean Animism and Undefined Fantastic Object, two games that are similar in some ways but completely different in others. What comes to mind as their creator, ZUN, looks back on them?

――

What kind of plan did you have in mind for the works following MoF?

ZUN

In my head, I had this idea that you'd climb up a mountain in MoF, then next you'd go underground, and then next it'd be in the sky or something. It reminded of this old Super Mario ad I saw when I was a kid: "Underground and in the sky." I thought it was a simple way to change the scenery and expand Gensokyo. In MoF it wasn't really about suddenly needing to go somewhere, so much as it was about people coming in from the outside world. So you might expect the next game to be about something else new arriving, but instead we go underground, and to the sky.

――

I see.

ZUN

As for SA, I don't think the concept of having the hated people show up was a mistake. I put effort into making each boss hated, but by making a game about hated people, the game generally gets harder. And then you can end up with the game itself being hated. I think it's a tricky balance.

――

It has a lot of passionate fans today.

ZUN

I'm surprised that it's gotten more fans recently. I think it's a matter of having different taste. Compared to the other works, the characters, the mood, and the music are all a little different. The setting's also a little heartbreaking. While there are some lively places underground, it's the location of the formerly lively Hell, and everything about that has already fallen into ruin. It's supposed to give off this sense of transience. Even the bright and simple idiots who ended up gathering there just make it seem all the more tragic.

――

Did you have any criteria for selecting characters?

ZUN

In terms of stage order, I think I had a pretty simple thought process: the most hated person is the one with the nukes. Obviously everyone hates disease. Then comes jealousy, and then the boss of stage 3 is an oni. But oni are like the symbol of the hated; that's how I thought of it. But anyone who could read your mind would definitely be hated more than the oni. And then, like, the ones who gather corpses. And nukes. It's almost like a complete list of things I hate (laugh).

――

And what about the protagonists' partners?

ZUN

Well, they needed to work together to face the hated, or something like that. Reimu has an all-star line-up of winners, right? But because of that, I made the bosses stronger too and raised the difficulty level (laugh). But that made it harder when I was making Marisa's teams. I wanted to balance the character combinations, but they also needed to make sense.

――

Anything interesting happen during development?

ZUN

I didn't have any data about caves, so I panicked, left my house at midnight, and drove west to Akiyoshido cave. Akiyoshido is the biggest limestone cave around, and I hadn't been there before. Unlike other caves which feel narrow and cramped, it was more like an underground space. When I saw it, I thought "Ah, I want SA to feel like this."

――

So what about UFO?

ZUN

If SA was more about providing a stage for the hated to show up on, UFO was more about putting the story first: here are the characters, and this is how they're connected. That's how I thought of it when I made it. Where I was aiming my focus was different. A setting for the hated, versus the connections between the characters and story. To be honest I don't think either is better. But for Touhou, I've learned that I should focus more on the story. Personally, I've never thought of characters as coming in "packages," but I noticed that fans like to talk about the "SDM group" or the "PCB group" so I had the intuition that maybe it'd be better to release them as "packages." I think characters are more popular when their presented as a package, and grouped together by the story. But in terms of actually writing that story, it's a huge hindrance, so this is still a problem going forward. I really worry about which approach to take for any one game, which is why MoF, SA, and UFO are so different. In the end I'm still not sure which is best, but recently I've been making things more like UFO.

――

I can see that.

ZUN

Of course the protagonists don't really have a motive in UFO, I don't know why they went to fight. Because of that, I had to make the story something so big that it's only common sense that they'd get involved. So in that sense, this isn't really a complete work. It's a story that's only possible because of the existing Touhou world. Since the protagonists' motivations are so weak, it's like the opposite of SA, where the story was given to the protagonists in order to create a reason to team up. In this case, the story was given to the enemies, and the protagonists just went to go watch. I think it's bad when a game shifts to being about the player's motives rather than the characters'. It was abandoning the protagonists, the setting and even the story itself, so I regret it a little.

――

True, the initial motivations are important for a story.

ZUN

I wanted to make SA and UFO opposites on that point. The settings are opposites too, and even the way you play them, the structure, the music, everything. I made them mirror images of each other. But looking back, it was awful how roughly I treated the protagonists in UFO. I kind of did it again in DDC too, but that was also awful (laugh). It just gets weird if the main characters aren't appealing. It's only fun for the person selecting them if you can say "Reimu is this sort of character." If they don't know who Reimu or Marisa are then there's no point in offering a choice. And even if you choose them, there's no meaning to it if you don't know what they're thinking. You can't do this unless you've already made a lot of works in the series.

――

So what about the UFOs?

ZUN

To me, they're an homage to the UFOs from Space Invaders. The design I used was just a basic UFO, but when you defeat the Extra Boss's UFOs they only give 300 points. I included a lot of little in-jokes like that. You could even say the whole game was an homage to Space Invaders. It's also a little interesting how the UFOs didn't have much to do with the plot of the game, but were connected to Nue. I developed the UFO idea alongside the idea for the whole game, but in the end I just threw them into the Extra stage. It's like, what was with the UFOs? (laugh) It's possible that the characters all saw different things, but I'm positive Sanae saw them as UFOs. If you ask me why I was so insistent on showing them as UFOs, I could only say it was because it's just a game, so what are you gonna do? If you put too much priority on the story, you can't do things like that, so it's tough. They feel mismatched with the main story of the game, and it's Nue's fault. Right up until I had her show up, I hadn't yet decided whether to go with a nue or an actual alien, like a Little Gray kind of thing. I was worrying about whether to go with "unidentified being = nue" right up to the last minute. If I'd gone with an actual alien, that would've overlapped with the Lunar Capital, and I'd have to develop what space was like, and it'd be a mess.

So was this the end of the faith storyline?

ZUN

The culmination of that was HM, so there's still TD to go. TD had the feeling of throwing the players right into it though. You're not really sure what's going on, so you just try to force your way in. That's how the game feels to me, anyway. Because I released that one, you're not really sure what's going on anymore, but it's a foundation for something new. Something like that.

――

I see.

ZUN

UFO also caused a stir with the people at Comiket, but it was the perfect timing to test exactly what Touhou was. At the time I thought they'd accept anything I put out, but after doing this I don't think so anymore. Now I think it's the opposite: the players have their own idea of what Touhou is, and I can't stray too far from that. To be honest, at the time I didn't really know what Touhou was either. I'd never solidified it in the first place, so what Touhou was was a little unclear. As more and more derivative works were made, more fans were getting into Touhou through those works. Nowadays that might seem obvious, and maybe even a good thing, but at the time a lot of people were saying it was bad. It was in that sort of environment that I think I was searching for a path, making a path, that could answer "what sort of thing is Touhou? What's the role of the original work?" There's more than just Touhou out there, after all. Almost all content is doing its own thing. In that environment, what can Touhou do? There's a limit to what I can do alone, and after all's said and done I still don't have a clear answer. No, wait, that's not quite true.

――

というと?

Meaning?

ZUN

My answer is something like this: if I released a Touhou game right now, that would be my answer. I'm always releasing the latest answer I've found at that moment. I've done a lot of things trying to find this answer. That said, after UFO I've had a lot more fun making games. It's like I broke past everything I'd been worrying about. Like I've gotten past my growth stage and reached maturity. This isn't about whether the works before that were good or not, I just feel like I've grown up. More or less. Personally I enjoy my life a lot now, and in that sense, until UFO I was actually pretty desperate. But regardless of whether I was enjoying myself or desperate, the games themselves didn't change all that much. In which case, isn't it obviously better for me to be enjoying myself? That's how I think now. I feel like a game made about how much its creator suffered, and all the things they thought about and went through, isn't going to be very fun. This doesn't apply to large-scale works with big teams, but for small-scale indie games I've started to think that the creators need to be enjoying themselves. I think that's absolutely critical. I'm not saying I didn't have fun before, but when I look back at how much I struggled in the past, I think "that didn't help at all." I think it's fine to go with the much simpler "I made it because I wanted to." And UFO was the impetus for me to start thinking that.
